Criminal justice actually got its beginning back in circa 2050 BC, when the Code of Ur-Nammu was written. According to Junto Society History, this ?code? was essentially an advanced legal system. In fact, not only did it include testimony under oath and specialized judges, but also, a punishment system with the punishment being in proportion to the crime. Throughout the various phases of time, the way crime and justice have been dealt with has evolved. In the United States, the Constitution and more specifically, the Bill of Rights, sets certain boundaries and rights for all Americans. But that is merely the foundation for the intricacies of our legal system.

When it comes to criminal justice, there are actually 3 main components: law enforcement, courts or legal system, and corrections. Law enforcement can include police officers, detectives, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and others. Detectives usually specialize in the investigation of a particular type of violation or crime and the cases are assigned. FBI agents investigate violations of Federal laws. Their investigations can include wiretaps, undercover assignments, the examination of business records, investigation of white collar crimes, and conducting surveillance. The types of crime investigated cover a wide range of activities, including everything from financial crime to cybercrime.

DEA agents deal with matters pertaining to illegal drugs, and U.S. marshals are responsible for the security of Federal courts. Other important agents and agencies include the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Border Patrol agents, Immigration inspectors, Customs inspectors, Federal Air Marshals, U.S. Secret Service special agents, and U.S. Secret Service uniformed officers.

An online masters degree in criminal justice can help prepare you for these careers or to be a private detective or investigator. Services offered by private detectives and investigators can include everything from celebrity protection to individual background profiles and providing assistance in missing persons cases. With such variety in investigative services, most private detectives choose to specialize in a particular area.

Another area of specialty is computer forensics. These investigators dedicate themselves to gathering data from computers, analyzing it, and then using that information as part of their investigation, or even as evidence in a court proceeding. Their data recovery includes gathering information that may have been deleted, erased, or encrypted.

Legal investigators are often employed by law firms or lawyers, for the purpose of assisting in the preparation of criminal defenses. This can include locating witnesses, conducting interviews, gathering and reviewing evidence, and even serving legal documents. Corporate investigators conduct both, internal and external investigations for corporations. External investigations are intended to prevent criminal schemes from outside the corporation. Internal investigations can include exploring whether employees are stealing from the company, abusing expense accounts, or even using drugs in the workplace. In some cases, the investigation can require investigators to pose as employees of the company for months.

Generally, careers in criminal justice offer work hours spent away from the office and desks. The work environment can vary greatly. In most cases the person working in criminal justice will work alone. The work can range from being extremely exciting and dangerous to being demanding and stressful. The hours can be steady and regular or they can be very irregular. This is due to the need of conducting surveillance or contacting people during evening or weekend hours.
