Cancer on the Brain ? Baseball, Business and Beating the Odds ...

Jay Lefevers with his 25-pound cat Spanky and his 1967 Mustang

I?m really excited to announce the release of a new memoir by Jay Lefevers, an Arizona businessman who battled and beat a brain tumor and cancer.

Appropriately titled Cancer on the Brain, Lefevers? book is an inspiring record of surviving multiple brain surgeries and fighting cancer, while also running a real estate business, being a husband and father, and coaching a winning Little League team.

I worked with the author on some of the editing for the book and have previously blogged about a film he was involved in backing ? Another Happy Day.

For me, Cancer on the Brain is a fascinating memoir about remaining focused on living life ? even when facing possible death ? and how and why we all need to be our own best healthcare advocates. If we don?t watch out for ourselves and our loved ones, and aggressively advocate for our health and the kind of care we receive, we run the risk of being subject to distracted doctors with jam-packed patient waiting rooms and well-meaning but over-burdened medical professionals.

Lefevers has a unique tone ? he?s tough on himself and he?s tough on the world around him in some ways ? but that?s what I enjoyed most about his book: his unflinching honesty about himself, his experiences and how he interpreted his circumstances and how he chose to meet the challenges of multiple brain surgeries but then after surviving all that, having to face cancer (lymphoma) and enduring the ensuing chemotherapy.

I sometimes bitch about my life and this thing or that thing not going my way ? I moan and groan about not having enough time to do some of the things I want to do or spend time with the people I say matter to me ? and then I read a book like this. About a guy with a business employing 15 people, a wife, three kids about to go to college, a couple of cats and a whole team of Little League players ? all looking to him in one way or another to keep their lives and interests on track ? and he still manages to find time to ride a roller-coaster (despite metal stitches in his head) and walk the Freedom Trail in Boston (despite the fact that he essentially had to relearn how to walk after the brain tumor had numbed out his nerves and left him unable to feel his foot).

I found it inspiring to read about the way Lefevers stayed fully engaged with his life ? even when faced with the possibility of losing that life. I need to take a lesson or two from this book.

You can snag a copy of Cancer on the Brain at all your usual online book-buying haunts?? at Barnes & Noble stores across the country, and, if you happen to live in the Phoenix area, Lefevers will be giving a talk in July at Scottsdale Barnes & Noble.

If you?d like to help spread the word about Cancer on the Brain, just visit the book?s Facebook page by clicking here and ?liking? it!

Affiliate Revenue ? Most Websites Don't Recognize This Much ...

It may seem like it is you against the world sometimes when it comes to dealing with affiliate marketing. With the vast amount of information available online, it can be nearly overwhelming at first. This article will provide much helpful information for you to get started on the right path.

Keep it fresh! Your social media account is a great place to post affiliate links to market other products and/or services. Just remember the articles you post on your website, should be fresh and vital! Include links to articles that would be of interest to your readers which are hosted on other websites, and engage your audience in conversation.

Try something new. If you find that your products are not converting, it?s ok to switch to a different product in the same genre or switch to a completely different genre. Affiliate marketing can be a trial and error business, so don?t be afraid to keep trying until you come across a product that works for you.

Place keywords in website content. By doing this, the search engines will recognize that your site is probably related to certain keywords and rank the site accordingly. But take care to do this naturally; abnormal keyword stuffing seems unnatural and unreadable to some. Just use the keywords in a conversational way.

Even if the main reason you have a website is to make money from affiliate marketing, having good content is crucial. Affiliate marketing should enrich a site, not overwhelm it. If the content is high quality, you will establish a loyal reader base that will trust the links you post.

To improve your affiliate marketing program, it can be a good idea to hold annual focus groups with some of your customers. These let you meet some of your customers and also get a sense of how they really feel about your products and services. They may even come up with useful ideas you would never have thought of.

You will need to know your target audience when putting affiliate marketing material on your site. Know why they are coming to your website and what it is that they are looking for there. If you don?t capture their interest quickly, they will leave the site without participating in anything.

Use your forum signatures to promote your affiliate link. Many forums do prohibit all types of commercial linking, but there are plenty that allow a small commercial link in your signature. If you continuously make useful, insightful posts, other members of the forum may choose to buy products from you.

Do your research to find the right keywords. There are many programs you can use to track what kind of keywords are popular, and what did the people who visited your website look for. Use the right keywords on your website, and make sure you repeat them often to attract more visits.

Try posting your affiliate promotions during business hours in the time zone which most of your websites audience lives in. For example, if your readers are mostly American, aim for between 12pm and 3pm EST as it will give you access to everyone in every time zone while they?re sitting at a computer.

When choosing an affiliate company to work with, choose a company that is easy to communicate with. When you have a company that makes communication difficult, you may have troubles that you will not be able to resolve. If you have an affiliate company that does not communicate well, consider looking for one that has good communication. Look for companies that clearly show their contact details and who welcome communication.

Aren?t you glad you took a few minutes to review some of the things you need to know about affiliate marketing? While some may just be a reminder, other tips may be just what you need to make it in this rough-and-tumble economy. Use the tips above in your endeavor to make affiliate marketing a success!

Military jazz concert hosted by Ogden, Mountaineer

CHESTER - Veterans will be honored by the Jazz Ambassadors of the United States Army Field Band on June 28 with a free concert performance.

"The Freedom Concert: A Salute to Veterans" is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Harv at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort. The approximately one-hour, 15-minute show will recognize the brave men and women who have served America.

The performance is sponsored by the The Review, the Morning Journal, the (Steubenville) Herald-Star, The Weirton Daily Times, and Mountaineer.

It will be the only indoor concert of the summer for the Jazz Ambassadors. An area color guard will help open the show, and three students from area high schools will have the opportunity to join the band in a musical selection.

Tickets will be available beginning today by using the coupon that is included in today's newspaper.

The show is expected to sell out quickly, and purchasers are asked to limit their requests to four tickets. Convenient free parking will be available at the venue, as well as wheelchair accessibility.

"The band represents soldiers at home and abroad, so it's a great opportunity for them to come to a small town in West Virginia and bring veterans together that have served throughout the years and their family members. Musically, they are terrific and the best at what they do. They tour 100 days annually and they carry the Army story across the nation," said Sgt. 1st Class Adam Getz, tour coordinator for the band.

All seating is general admission and will be first-come, first-served on the floor as well as the bleachers.

In addition, there will be a free commemorative program handed out to attendees at the event.

"Mountaineer Casino is pleased to join with Ogden Newspapers to present this very special night of entertainment. We are looking forward to the big band sound on the stage at the Harv," said Chris Kern, general manager of Mountaineer.

"It will truly be a community event and a celebration of America that will be shared with our neighbors and guests through Odgen newspapers' distribution of free tickets to those wanting to attend."

According to Tammie McIntosh, publisher of The Review, a big draw of the event is the band's "Armed Forces Salute," which specifically honors the veterans.

"The performers are so very talented and their music selection is wonderful. It expresses so well my love and pride for my country that it brings tears to my eyes," said McIntosh. "I'm excited to once again be able to host the band. The last time they played in our area, it was a sellout."

And that's what the show is really about -honoring and recognizing those who fought bravely for freedom and liberty. Larry Dorschner, publisher of the Morning Journal, said their sacrifice is something that is often forgotten or taken for granted.

"I think more than anything we want them to be honored and remembered for what they've given to this country. I think it's great anytime we can bring this quality of entertainment to the area, particularly to celebrate veterans at this time of year," said Dorschner.

Alex Marshall, publisher of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times, said the patriotic sounds of the band always make for an incredible show.

"We're happy to be teaming with the folks at Mountaineer, the Morning Journal and The Review to bring their big band sound to a large portion of Eastern Ohio and the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia," said Marshall.

Francesca Torini, a junior at Steubenville High School, is one of the area students who has been chosen to perform a selection with the band, and she said she is excited for the opportunity.

"I've been playing for about seven years. A friend of mine played with the band last year, so I'm very excited. It's a cool opportunity," said Torini.

She is planning to minor in music when she attends college.

"My parents are very proud and excited that I'm getting to do this. Music just makes me happy and I love doing it," Torini said.

For additional information, call Cindy Kotsch, special events and marketing coordinator for the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times, at 740-283-4711, extension 215. Information on the United States Army Field Band can be found at www.armyfieldband.com.

"They are one of the country's top jazz ensembles and some of the most talented musicians around. They bring the story and the face of the Army to the grassroots of America," said Sgt. 1st Class Heather Van Beek, tour coordinator for the Field Band.

The US Army Field Band

For more than 60 years, the United States Army Field Band has been touring the world and entertaining audiences in First- and Third-World countries.

Forming in 1946, the field band has appeared in all 50 states and in more than 30 countries across four continents. The field band is comprised of four sections: the Concert Band, the Soldiers' Chorus, the Jazz Ambassadors and the Volunteers.

Each component tours more than 100 days annually, a schedule that includes formal public concerts, school assemblies, educational outreach programs, festivals and radio and television appearances.

The U.S. Army Field Band has been acclaimed by music critics nationwide as one of the most versatile and inspiring musical organizations in the world. Members are selected through highly competitive auditions and represent some of the highest musical talent in the country.

Their talent, combined with more than six decades of experience, has garnered them the title of "The Musical Ambassadors of the Army."

After World War II in 1946, the United States Armed Forces were in the midst of the largest military drawdown in modern history. Millions of servicemen and women returned stateside to resume their civilian lives and the military's numbers decreased dramatically. Gen. Jacob L. Devers foresaw the need to maintain a relationship between the Army and the American people and an important part of this effort was the First Combat Infantry Band.

The new band existed under the umbrella of U.S. Army Ground Forces, and was renamed the Army Ground Forces Band. In the spring of 1950, as the Army Ground Forces were re-titled "U.S. Army Field Forces," the band assumed a new name-the United States Army Field Band-that it keeps to this day.

The Jazz Ambassadors is comprised of 19 members and was formed in 1969.

Their performances include custom compositions and arrangements that showcase the musical talent of its members. Musical styles include: big band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, Dixieland and a number of patriotic selections and more.

In addition to touring the states, the band has appeared in Canada, Mexico, Japan, India and throughout Europe. It has played at international jazz festivals in Montreux, Switzerland; Newport, R.I.; Brussels, Belgium; and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. In addition, in 1995 it performed in England, Wales, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Than band has played with major orchestras such as the Detroit and Baltimore symphonies.

Every four years, the U.S. Army Field Band is charged with the special responsibility of leading the first element of the Presidential Inaugural Parade.

Report: Microsoft prepping Office for iPad, Android tablets

A new report indicates that Microsoft's Office suite will be heading to Apple's iPad and Android tablets later this year.

?

Boy Genius Report (BGR) reported that it has a "reliable source" who said Microsoft plans to launch Office apps for iOS and Android tablets in November. Office may also be coming to the iPhone and iPod touch, according to BGR, as the app's loading screen apparently said "Office for iOS" not just for iPad.

?

The new information corroborates a report from The Daily earlier this year that Office is headed to the iPad. The Daily reported in February that the Office for iPad app was complete and would soon be submitted to Apple for App Store approval.

?

The app's interface was said to be similar to that of OneNote, Microsoft's note-taking app, which received iPad support in December. The Daily said it also has allusions to Metro, the design standard that appears in Windows Phone and the forthcoming Windows 8 operating system. According to the report, the Office app lets you edit and create Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files locally and online.

?

?

A Microsoft spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PCMag on Thursday. The Redmond, Wash.-based computing giant told the New York Times back in February that The Daily story was "based on inaccurate rumors and speculation."

?

Microsoft plans to release the next version of its operating system, Windows 8, later this year, but has not yet finalized a launch date.

How the Euro debt collectors are killing Greeks?taking away their medicines

?

LaRouche Irish Brigade
May 25, 2012

?

Greek pharmacists staged a one-day strike protesting the fact that the government owes them EU1 billion, which has created major shortages of medicines, which are killing Greeks. They say that this has caused an ?emergency situation? in which cancer and cardiac patients are in a panic because they cannot get the medications, either because they can no longer afford them or because they simply are not available.

?I give it 15 days. If the European Union doesn?t release the loans it has promised by then, there will be scenes of utter chaos here,? said Dimitris Karageorgiou, secretary general of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association. ?The situation will become dramatic. Already we have cancer sufferers going from hospital to hospital to try and find drugs, because no one can afford to stock them,? he said. ?If the shortages get worse, God knows what we will see.? Since the bailout started, he said ?120 pharmacies have closed in Athens alone because of pressures from delays in payments for prescriptions from social security funds.

Whatever you read about shortages is little. There are about 300 medicines that are no longer readily available. It?s tragic.?

?The situation with anti-cancer drugs is out of control, but what can we do?? one pharmacist said. ?Because we?re not being reimbursed, we can?t pay suppliers, who can?t pay the companies. It?s a chain effect.?

Under orders from the EU-ECB-IMF Troika, Athens amalgamated within months 13 social security funds into one body, the National Organization for Healthcare Provision (EOPYY), which has had the effect allowing the government to centrally control the disbursement ? in reality, non-disbursement ? of funds.

Hospice wedding for Pleasanton leukemia patient and beau

PLEASANTON -- The bride wore a flowing lavender gown. The groom wore a dark suit with pink roses on his lapel.

A flute played, those watching wept, and bride and groom statuettes sat atop the cake.

It was a traditional wedding in many ways except for the setting: a nursing and rehabilitation home where hospice patient Rhonda Jackson tied the knot Thursday with her beau of 13 years.

Jackson, 60, and Jerzy Robert Gembura, 55, said they decided to marry now, in part because they hope Jackson is in remission from the leukemia that forced her to move two years ago into Pleasanton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Their simple ceremony, attended by some 25 caregivers, deepened the meaning of often repeated wedding vows to care for each other in sickness and health and stay together until "death do us part," guests and the chaplain said

"I hope the remission is permanent," said Jackson who is not strong enough walk because of the effects of the cancer and other ailments. Jackson said her doctor told her two years ago to expect to live only a few more weeks.

"You never know," she said. "You take one day at a time."

Jackson called the ceremony one of the best days of her life, although she quipped later that she had no immediate plans to honeymoon or hit the town.

"I'm not going dancing tonight," she said.

The couple -- who lived together in Pleasanton before Jackson moved into the nursing home in 2010 --

planned to share lunch at the home after the morning wedding.

Jackson and Gembura had planned a quiet bedside ceremony, but her caregivers at the facility and those with Vitas Innovative Hospice Care didn't want the first wedding at the nursing facility to go unnoticed.

They ramped up planning, provided a wedding gown, a flutist, balloons, bubbles, a wedding cake and sparkling cider in the living room at the home.

Those caregivers let go with a din of clapping and cheering after the couple was pronounced man and wife by a hospice chaplain.

"It was a very emotional event for us," said Lisa Foster, admission director at the 139-bed home on Neal Street. "They are like family to us."

Gembura and Jackson met nearly 14 years ago via an online dating service.

This is the first marriage for Gembura, an unemployed electrical engineer looking for work.

Jackson is a former architectural designer who has been married three times before.

"I know this is the one that is going to last," she said. "It's like a new beginning."

As Beryl approaches, mayor asks residents to heed warnings, prepare

11 a.m.: National Hurricane Center: Beryl strengthens

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center shows Beryl gaining strength, with sustained winds at 60 mph. The storm is located 125 miles to the east of Jacksonville and moving west at 10 mph. Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the coast late this morning or early afternoon. Landfall is expected this evening. Rain totals of 3 to 6 inches are possible.

8:45 a.m.: Mayor asks residents to take caution, prepare for storm

At a morning news conference at the city's Emergency Operations Center, Mayor Alvin Brown encouraged residents to take caution and prepare for subtropical storm Beryl.

"I am encouraging all area residents to stay indoors and off the streets as the storm approaches,? Brown said. "And please do not go into the water today. Stay out of the water ??it's about safety."

Brown also encouraged business owners to close early today to allow employees to get home safely and prepare for the storm.

No mandatory evacuations have been issued, he said.

Residents should prepare, however, for localized flooding, downed trees and downed power lines. "Don't become compacent; take this very seriously," he stressed.

An emergency shelter for those with special needs will open at noon today at the Legends Center at 5130 Soutel Drive near Moncrief Road in Northwest Jacksonville.

He said that he expects garbage pick-up on Monday will be halted.

At this time, there are not plans to close Jacksonville International Airport and there are no bridge closures, he said. Updates on the Jacksonville Port Authority are forthcoming.

Additionally, the mayor said he signed a declaration of emergency, paving the way for federal assistance if needed.

Updates on the city's official Memorial Day activities are expected later this morning.

For more information, residents can call 630-2489 (630-CITY) or visit jaxready.org.

Our earlier story:

Subtropical storm Beryl is churning ever closer to the Southeast U.S. coast, threatening Memorial Day beachgoers with dangerous surf and drenching rains from Northeast Florida to the Carolinas.

The National Hurricane Center said Beryl was centered at 8 a.m. about 165 miles east of Jacksonvile. Forecasters said the system has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving west-southwest at 10 mph.

In advance of the storm, the City of Jacksonville and Mayor Alvin Brown have canceled today's Jacksonville Jazz Festival activities with the sole exception of the jazz brunch event at downtown's Omni Hotel.

With dangerous rip currents present, the city also has closed the beaches for swimming.

The city will open a special-needs shelter at the Legends Center at Soutel and Moncrief in Northwest Jacksonville at noon. Anyone electricity- and oxygen-dependent should use this shelter if there are power outages or flooding.

Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Northeast Florida, stretching from south of St. Augustine northward along the coasts of Georgia and parts of South Carolina. The Miami-based hurricane center says the storm is expected to make landfall Sunday night or early Monday.

Beryl is technically considered a "subtropical storm," its thunderstorms capable of generating dangerous surf and rains of up to 3 to 6 inches.

Over 5,000 aftershocks rattle Japan

An earthquake that ruptured this week off the coast of Japan was the largest recent aftershock to affect an area that, more than a year after one of the most powerful earthquakes on record, is still experiencing a steady stream of seismic jolts.

So far, 5,229 aftershocks have rattled the tectonic boundary that ruptured off the coast of Japan's Tohoku region in March 2011. The magnitude-9.0 earthquake was the fifth-largest earthquake ever recorded.

The Sunday quake was listed as both magnitude-6.0 and -6.4. The United States Geological Survey has now confirmed that it was a magnitude-6.4 earthquake, making it the largest aftershock since March 14, when a magnitude-6.9 earthquake hit the region.

Magnitude-6.0 quakes can cause serious damage if they hit near populated areas, yet the bulk of Japan's significant aftershocks have hit out at sea, many miles from land, and have caused relatively few problems.

This recent quake caused only light shaking for residents of northern Japan, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data. It occurred beneath the Pacific Ocean, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) east of Miyako, a coastal town devastated by the deadly tsunami that followed the March 2011 earthquake. [ Images: Japan Quake & Tsunami ]

"With an earthquake this big, you can have aftershocks for months and years," said Paul Earle, a seismologist with the USGS. You can't say when or where they'll happen, he told OurAmazingPlanet, but they tend to decrease in number exponentially.

However, he added, there's an equal chance of getting a big aftershock or a small one. There tend to be fewer powerful aftershocks the more time goes by, but that's only because there are fewer aftershocks in general.

In total, 82 aftershocks of magnitude-6.0 or higher have hit since the Tohoku quake. The two largest, a 7.9 and a 7.7, hit on March 11, in the hours following the colossal main shock.

"Aftershocks are just earthquakes ? they look exactly the same," said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist with the USGS. "The only thing that defines an aftershock is it's in the same basic location and has the same type of mechanism as the main shock," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

And aftershocks happen for the same reason a main shock happens, Earle said ? when the stresses on either side of a fault exceed the friction that's holding it together.

The realm of living things known to science gained some fascinating new members in the past year. These include a monkey that sneezes when it rains; a tiny worm discovered nearly a mile below ground; a mushroom that looks more like a sponge and the first night-blooming orchid ever recorded.

In the case of Japan's Tohoku earthquake, the stresses that had built up were enormous. The aftershocks that have continued in its wake are the result of changes in the way stress is distributed around the fault.

"It's difficult to express how big this earthquake was compared to other earthquakes," Earle said. "When you have an earthquake this big, it totally reorients the stress that existed before it, and the Earth responds," he said.

Usually I hate QR codes. They're ugly technology needlessly solving non-problems in a flawed attempt to be futuristic. Obama, Karzai push post-2014 vision of Afghanistan

By NBC News and news services

Updated 6:22 p.m. ET: CHICAGO -- President Barack Obama on Sunday pressed world leaders to help implement a strategy for post-2014 Afghanistan after U.S. troops leave, a transition that Afghan President Hamid Karzai said will mark the day that his war-torn country is "no longer a burden" on the rest of the?world.

Obama and Karzai met on the sidelines of the NATO summit on Sunday to discuss Afghanistan's post-conflict future. After the meeting, Obama told reporters that the two-day summit would focus on Afghanistan's move to peace and stability after a decade of war.

"We still have a lot of work to do and there will be great challenges ahead," Obama said. "The loss of life continues in Afghanistan and there will be hard days ahead."

Standing next to Obama, Karzai reaffirmed his commitment to the transition timetable?process, which he said will lead to a time when Afghanistan "is no longer a burden on the shoulder of our friends in the international community, on the shoulders of the United States and other allies."

Karzai also thanked Americans for the help that their "taxpayer money" has done in?Afghanistan.

President Barack Obama, right, shakes hands with with Afghan President Hamid Karzai during their meeting at the NATO summit in Chicago on Sunday.

"Afghanistan is fully aware of the task ahead and of what Afghanistan needs to do to reach the objectives that we all have of a stable, peaceful and self-reliant Afghanistan," he said.

President Barack Obama welcomes foreign leaders to the NATO summit in Chicago. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

Obama later opened the summit by telling world leaders: "For over 65 years our alliance has been the bedrock of our common security, our freedom and our prosperty, and although times have changed the reasons for our alliance has not."

Obama urged NATO leaders to ratify a "broad consensus" for gradually turning over security to Afghan forces and pulling out most of the 130,000 NATO troops by the end of 2014.

Earlier, a top NATO official?insisted?that the Afghanistan fighting coalition will remain whole despite France's plans to yank combat troops out early.

"There will be no rush for the exits," NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. "We will stay committed and see it through to a successful end. Our goal, our strategy, our timetable remain unchanged."

NATO leaders gathered in Chicago to chart a path out of Afghanistan as war-weary Western nations seek to fend off dissent in their alliance and ensure Afghanistan can hold a still-potent Taliban at bay when foreign troops withdraw.

Obama was hosting the two-day summit in his hometown, a day after leaders of major industrialized nations tackled Europe's debt crisis, backing keeping Greece in the euro zone and vowing to take steps necessary to revitalize the world economy.

Public opinion in Europe and the United States is solidly against the war, with a majority of Americans now saying it is unwinnable or not worth continuing.

Newly elected French President Francois Hollande has said he will withdraw all French combat troops from Afghanistan by year's end ? a full two years before the timeline agreed to by nations in the U.S.-led NATO coalition.

"President Hollande has stated that France would be prepared to support Afghanistan in a different way," Rasmussen said.

But signaling tensions over the issue, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters: "We went into Afghanistan together, we want to leave Afghanistan together."

Hollande repeated a pledge during his inaugural visit to Washington last week to pull "combat troops" from Afghanistan this year. He has said an extremely limited number of soldiers would remain to train Afghan forces and bring back equipment beyond 2012.

"This decision is an act of sovereignty and must be done in good coordination with our allies and partners," said Hollande, who was?to discuss his exit plans with Karzai.

A last-minute addition to the list of leaders at the NATO meeting was President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan, whose western tribal areas provide shelter to militants attacking Karzai's government and NATO forces. He pressed the United States to help find a "permanent solution'' to U.S. drone strikes that have fueled tensions between the two uneasy allies.

"The president said that Pakistan wanted to find a permanent solution to the drone issue as it not only violated our sovereignty but also inflamed public sentiments,'' Zardari spokesman Farhatullah Babar said in a statement after the Pakistani leader met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the sidelines of the summit.

The statement did not specify what such a solution might entail.

Gen. John Allen, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, told Reuters he was confident a deal would eventually be struck but "whether it's in days or weeks, I don't know."

Zardari also called for the United States to do more to make amends for the deaths of 24 Pakistani soldiers killed in November by U.S. aircraft along the border with Afghanistan.

Pakistan has demanded a high-level apology for that incident, which the White House has resisted so far.

Fiscal demands, including plans for major cuts to defense spending in Europe and the United States, were sure to color the talks in Chicago, as they did those between G-8 leaders.

The overarching message from that G-8 summit reflected Obama's own concerns that euro-zone contagion, which threatens the future of Europe's 17-country single currency bloc, could hurt a fragile U.S. recovery and his re-election chances.

With better car safety, highway deaths falling

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com contributor

If the numbers in a preliminary federal study hold true, U.S. highway deaths continued to plunge last year ? when measured in terms of fatalities per 100 million miles driven - to the lowest level since the government began keeping records in 1921.?

A number of factors have contributed to the decline, which has seen traffic deaths dip 25 percent just since 2005. These include better roads and signage and a crackdown on drunk drivers.? But another significant factor is the continuing improvement in the safety of the vehicles we drive.

By using the latest in computer-aided design technology, manufacturers have learned how to shield motorists and passengers from the deadly forces of even the most serious crashes.? Equally significant are the various high-tech safety devices that are finding their way into the industry?s newest models and which can help motorists avoid accidents in the first place.?

?Our research shows that some of the newest forward collision avoidance systems, such as Volvo?s City Safety, are reducing collisions by as much as 20 percent to 30 percent,? said David Zuby, chief research officer for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The 2013 model year will see some of the most sophisticated systems yet developed ? and in many cases technologies once limited to only the most expensive models are migrating down to even entry-level vehicles.

It?s been more than 40 years since federal regulations began mandating improvements in automotive safety, with the seat belt being one of the first devices written into law.? In 2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration added electronic stability control ? which is designed to keep a car under control on slick surfaces or when it makes an overly aggressive maneuver ? to the list. And the NHTSA may soon add rear back-up cameras to the list.

Credit ever faster microprocessors, along with the overall drop in the price of electronic hardware, for making it possible to mandate such technology.? But where industry planners routinely resisted new federal regulations in decades past, these days manufacturers are likely to introduce new features ? often as standard equipment ? without pressure from the government.

?There?s an expectation on the part of customers for more and more safety equipment,? explained General Motors designer Bob Boniface.

The challenge these days, he said is to find a place to put all the various controls and sensors. The front ends of some of GM?s most advanced models. are ?covered? with radar and laser sensors, he said, with many new models also introducing advanced video cameras as well.

The latest safety technology roughly divides into two separate categories: active and passive systems.? Passive systems are those designed to reduce injuries if an accident occurs. An air bag is such a system.? Expect to see some models, such as the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, offer as many as 10 air bags.? The new two-seat Scion iQ microcar is offering the first air bag designed to protect a passenger in the event the vehicle is struck from the rear.

Ford?s is expanding the use of its new inflatable rear seat belts, now found in several models, including the recently redesigned Explorer.? According to just-retired Ford safety chief Sue Cischke, the devices are particularly well-suited for use by the very young and the very old because they can suffer internal injuries from the forces acting on standard seat belts in severe collisions.

The 2013 model year will also see a number of new applications of the most advanced active safety systems, which are designed to prevent accidents.? A wide range of new mainstream products will add forward collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring and active lane-keeping.? The 2013 Ford Fusion will not only warn drivers that they are drifting out of their lanes but will also help steer the car back into the lane. If the system detects that the driver might also be drowsy, it will sound an alert warning the driver to pull over and rest.

Significantly, many of the most advanced technologies are migrating down-market.? Cross-traffic alert was introduced only a few years ago on the redesigned BMW-7 Series. The system, which uses radar to monitor oncoming traffic as a driver backs out of a parking spot, will now be offered on a wide range of midline models, such as the 2013 Nissan Altima.

The redesigned midsized sedan also features blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and other systems as part of an optional technology package.? The trick, explained Nissan product manager John Curl. was to use a single wide-angle rear camera instead of an assortment of much more expensive radar and sonar sensors.?

Subaru will take a similar approach in 2013 with its new EyeSight system, technology it has been tweaking for almost a decade.? The system uses a pair of stereoscopic cameras mounted on either side of the rear-view mirror to look out onto the road ahead.? It?s a lower-cost alternative, the maker claimed, compared to the radar-based safety systems currently in use by luxury makers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

According to IIHS research, the new technologies are paying off.? The basic Mercedes forward collision warning system has reduced accident rates by approximately 6 percent. And the maker has introduced a more advanced version of what it calls Distronic, which can apply the brakes if it senses the driver is not reacting in time to a potential collision.

Cadillac is now working on a prototype system that could also steer a vehicle around an obstacle without a motorist?s involvement.? And a number of makers ? as well as tech giant Google ? are working on fully autonomous vehicles that some proponents believe could be ready for sale before decade?s end.

The good news is that even the features now on the road are saving lives, but IIHS research chief Zuby stressed that because the typical American car remains in use for a decade or longer, it will be close to 2020 before most vehicles in the U.S. fleet have advanced technologies such as electronic stability control, let alone collision warning and blind spot detection.

On the other hand, he added, ?As older vehicles retire and these technologies come into a broader segment of the fleet, we can expect to see the death rate continue to decline.?

Catholic dioceses, colleges sue over Obama mandate

(AP) ? Roman Catholic leaders opened a new front against the Obama administration mandate that employers provide workers birth control coverage, filing federal lawsuits Monday on behalf of dioceses, schools and health care agencies that argued the requirement violates religious freedom.

Among the plaintiffs is the University of Notre Dame, which in February had praised President Barack Obama for pledging to accommodate religious groups and find a way to soften the rule. Notre Dame president, the Rev. John Jenkins, said the school had since decided to sue because "progress has not been encouraging" in talks with administration officials.

The lawsuits have been filed in eight states and the District of Columbia by the Archdioceses of Washington and New York, the Michigan Catholic Conference, Catholic Charities in Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri and Indiana, health care agencies in New York and two dioceses in Texas.

"We have tried negotiation with the administration and legislation with the Congress, and we'll keep at it, but there's still no fix," said New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. "Time is running out, and our valuable ministries and fundamental rights hang in the balance, so we have to resort to the courts now."

Erin Shields, a spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Department, said Monday the agency does not comment on pending litigation. The liberal advocacy group Catholics United accused the bishops of serving a "right-wing political agenda."

Health and Human Services adopted the mandate to improve health care for women. Last year, an advisory panel from the Institute of Medicine, which advises the federal government, recommended including birth control on the list of covered services, partly because it promotes maternal and child health by allowing women to space their pregnancies.

However, many leaders across faith traditions and political ideology argued that the mandate's exception for religious groups was too narrow. The original rule generally allowed churches and other houses of worship to opt out, but kept the requirement in place for religiously affiliated nonprofits, including hospitals, colleges and charities.

The political furor caught the administration by surprise. In response, Obama offered to soften the rule so that insurers would pay for birth control instead of religious groups. However, the bishops and others have said that the accommodation, which is still under discussion, doesn't go far enough to protect religious freedom. An Obama administration official said the rule was still under discussion with religious leaders.

The lawsuits are the latest in the intensifying standoff between Roman Catholic bishops and the Obama administration during this election year.

The bishops plan a national campaign for religious freedom in the two weeks leading up to the July Fourth holiday. Last week, Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl lambasted Georgetown University, a Jesuit school, for inviting Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to make a graduation speech. Sebelius, who defended religious freedom in her talk, was named as a defendant in the lawsuits Monday, along with her agency and others.

The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a public interest law firm, had previously filed four other federal lawsuits challenging the mandate on behalf of religious schools and others. Still, observers had been closely watching for Notre Dame's next step.

The university, dubbed the Catholic Harvard, in the past indicated willingness to work with Obama, despite his support for abortion rights. Notre Dame came under unprecedented criticism from U.S. bishops and others in 2009 for inviting Obama as commencement speaker and presenting him with an honorary law degree.

In February, when Obama responded to the complaints of religious leaders about the mandate, Jenkins said in a statement that, "we applaud the willingness of the administration to work with religious organizations to find a solution acceptable to all parties."

On Monday, Jenkins said, "although I do not question the good intentions and sincerity of all involved in these discussions, progress has not been encouraging."

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is not a plaintiff in the lawsuits. Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik, whose diocese is among those suing the government, said the law firm Jones Day was handling the lawsuits pro bono nationally.

Lockerbie bomber to be buried, controversy lives on

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, the only person convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing which killed 270 people, was to be buried Monday after he died of cancer protesting his innocence to the end.

"His pain is over now -- he is with god," said Mohammed al-Megrahi, insisting that his brother died an innocent man.

"There never was exact proof," he stressed.

Megrahi was found guilty of blowing up Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988, killing all 259 people on board along with 11 people on the ground.

He died on Sunday, almost three years after the Scottish government freed him on compassionate grounds following his diagnosis with prostate cancer.

Relatives said the funeral would be held later on Monday.

Megrahi's death has revived the debate on whether the initial verdict was flawed and prompted sharply contrasting reactions in Britain and the United States.

He had always maintained his innocence, arguing that US agencies "led the way" in securing his conviction.

His brother Abdelhakim defended him on Sunday, saying he was the "scapegoat" of the regime of Moamer Kadhafi, toppled in a popular uprising last year.

"He has died and has left us with the feeling of injustice," he told AFP. "Everyone knows that the Kadhafi regime blamed its mistakes on others."

The brother said the family would cooperate fully with any reopened investigation into the Lockerbie killings.

"We are convinced of Abdelbaset's innocence. Yes, we want the truth. It's in our interest," Abdelhakim said.

The US government, which was outraged by Scotland's decision to free the former Libyan airline security chief, said his death concluded "an unfortunate chapter."

"We will continue working with our new partners in Libya toward a full accounting of (Moamer) Kadhafi's horrific acts," said US National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Libya's interim government pledged its full cooperation with any further inquiries into the Lockerbie bombing, which some, particularly in Britain, have blamed on Iran and its Palestinian allies rather than Kadhafi.

"In Libya, it is in our interest to close this case and bring out the truth," said Transitional National Council spokesman Mohammed Harizi. "We want to expose the crimes of Kadhafi which did so much harm to the Libyan people."

Britain's Independent newspaper demanded a public inquiry but its calls were rejected by Prime Minister David Cameron who again criticised Megrahi's release by the Scottish authorities, who have devolved powers in judicial and penal affairs.

"Megrahi's death is no reason to stop trying to get to the truth," said the left-leaning newspaper's editorial.

Cameron insisted: "There was a proper process, a proper court proceeding and all the rest of it. We have to give people the chance to mourn those that were lost."

The fact that Megrahi survived much longer than the doctors had estimated provoked indignation in Britain and the United States.

The convict had been greeted as a hero on his return to Kadhafi's Libya, after having served eight years of a minimum 27-year sentence for his role in the Lockerbie bombing.

Several relatives of US citizens killed in the Lockerbie bombing said they were pleased that Megrahi had died.

"He deserved to die," said Susan Cohen, whose daughter Theodora was one of the victims.

"He was a mass murderer. I feel no pity around him. He got to die with his family around him. My daughter, at age 20, died a brutal, horrible death," she told CNN.

But the father of one of the victims of the Lockerbie bombing, who has long believed Megrahi was innocent, said it was a sad day.

"It is a sad time, I think. I have been satisfied for some years that this man was nothing to do with the murder of my daughter," Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was killed in the attack, told BBC TV.

"I think Scotland has a big question to answer as to why his verdict hasn't long since been reviewed."

In December, Megrahi told several British newspapers in what was billed as a "final interview" that a book being written by investigative journalist John Ashton would clear his name.

"I am an innocent man," he told the papers, including The Times and the Daily Mail.

"I am about to die and I ask now to be left in peace with my family," he said.

Samsung chief: we're open to a cross-licensing deal with Apple, but 4G chip shortage might last until the fall

Image

The at times very heated legal battle between Apple and Samsung might be softening just a bit ahead of truce talks on May 21st. Samsung's mobile head JK Shin just left Seoul for the mediated discussions saying there were still "several negotiation options" on tap, including the possibility of cross-licensing patents. He warned that there was still a "big gap" between the two sides, and we'd tend to agree -- neither Apple nor Samsung is exactly backing off just yet. However, it's a definite shift in language from March, when Shin was vowing "no compromise," and it parallels Apple CEO Tim Cook's own disdain for lawsuits. We just wouldn't bet money on the two singing "Kumbaya" this week.

In same breath, Shin added that an ongoing 4G chipset shortage wasn't letting up: he didn't see things getting better until the start of the fourth quarter, or October for us common folk. That's a problem for Samsung's phones and tablets most of all, of course, and in a dire case could see LTE-packing American Galaxy S III variants rely on other vendors' chips to stay on the 4G bandwagon. There's also a chance of a ripple effect on other companies that want Samsung's parts, but short of getting a peek at Samsung's inner workings, we won't know the full impact for awhile yet.

Samsung chief: we're open to a cross-licensing deal with Apple, but 4G chip shortage might last until the fall originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 20 May 2012 13:02:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
