PFT: Tebow 'not sure' if he'll be starting QB again

demaurice-smith1Getty Images

The NFLPA largely has been quiet regarding the NFL?s conclusion from four weeks ago today that the Saints maintained a bounty system for three years, administered by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and funded by and distributed to defensive players who, among other things, knocked opponents out of games.

Executive director DeMaurice Smith, who was elected to a second term last week, addressed the situation in an ?exclusive interview? with ProPlayerInsiders.com, a website that essentially operates as an arm of the NFLPA.

Smith believes that the league should provide all information regarding the investigation to the union.? ?As of yet, they haven?t turned over anything that we would consider to be direct evidence of player involvement in a ?pay to injure? scheme that we could consider for discipline,? Smith said.? ?It?s very hard to have a productive discussion about punishment when one side has kept, to itself, all the information.?

Smith hopes that the information will be provided before discipline is imposed on any players.

?It?s a very, at least from our perspective, a very unfair situation where you have a number of allegations floating back and forth in the press,? Smith said.? ?There certainly appears to be some information that?s been provided to the media about certain individuals? involvement and references to everything from emails to Powerpoints.? It?s difficult for those players to be in a situation where they can hardly defend themselves from unsubstantiated accusations that are being made in the public.?

Smith is right, to an extent.? On one hand, negative information about players like Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma has been leaked by the league.? On the other hand, these aren?t accusations ? these are conclusions that the league has made, based in large part on admissions from members of the Saints organization.

Smith also addressed for the first time last week?s ill-advised decision by NFL Network, which is owned by the league, to permit discussion on its air regarding the identity of the person who blew the whistle in 2011, which allowed the bounty system to finally be exposed.? ?We have an unfortunate circumstance now where someone from the National Football League, or at least an affiliate of the National Football League, accused another player of providing information, or being the so-called ?whistleblower,?? Smith said.? ?There are accusations flying back and forth about who provided the information, and who didn?t provide the information.?

The NFL presumably will provide the information in conjunction with the appeals that the players who are punished inevitably will file.? It?s unclear whether the league has any advance obligation to do so, it should.? This is an unprecedented situation in which the league and the union need to work together.? The NFL?s failure to cooperate now makes it less likely that the NFLPA will do anything other than fight later.

How did humans evolve to walk upright? Fossil discovery complicates the picture. (+video)

Foot bones unearthed recently in Ethiopia belonged to a contemporary of 'Lucy,' the 3.2-million-year-old early human discovered in 1974. But these bones seem to belong to a different species, one thought to have split its time between walking upright and climbing trees.?

Learning to walk indicates a child's progression from infant to toddler. But walking on two legs is uncommon among mammals. In fact, standing and walking on our own two feet helps to set us apart from other mammals.

Skip to next paragraph A few million years ago, our ancestors stopped climbing trees and started walking upright, on two feet. To work out how and when this happened, researchers look for fossils -- and recently they found a surprising set of foot bones in Ethiopia. The foot is about 3.4 million years old, making it roughly the same age as 'Lucy' and her species, Australopithecus afarensis. But while Lucy's species had feet much like modern humans, the new foot has an opposable big toe, like a chimp. So do the foot bones represent a new species of hominin? Watch the video and decide.

New findings reported earlier this week in the journal Nature show that early hominins held onto their ability to climb trees longer than scientists previously thought.

Discovered in Burtele, Ethiopia, recently unearthed right foot bones are about 3.4 million years old and is thought to belong to a new species. The stiff joints of foot and toe bones suggest that the early hominin was capable of bending its foot upward to enable walking. The thumb-like big toe, however, would have helped it to also climb trees, like African great apes.

?It?s a lovely little foot to have,? paleoanthropologist Donald C. Johanson?told The New York Times. Working in Ethiopia in 1974, Johanson?discovered "Lucy," the first specimen of Australopithecus afarensis, a species thought to be either a human ancestor or a close relative of one.?Johanson's discovery indicated that bipedalism preceded humanity's increase in brain size.?

This new finding suggests that the evolution of bipedalism was more nuanced than we knew. The dual-purpose bones are about the same age as Lucy's, but scientists think that Lucy's species mostly moved by walking upright. Since two species of hominin existed at the same time, with different shaped feet, it appears that hominins evolved to walk more than once.

There are still many unknowns surrounding the evolution of humans' bipedalism.

Hominin bones of this age are uncommon. Their small size makes them susceptible to scavengers and deterioration. So there just isn't much evidence for scientists to use in their interpretations.

Without the rest of the Burtele skeleton, it is difficult to determine precisely how this hominin moved. As this NPR story points out, bipedalism requires evolutionary changes from head to toe.

"We need more fossils to determine what sorts of bodies went with these feet," wrote Daniel Lieberman, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard, in a commentary in this week's Nature.

Scientists will continue to hunt for more fossil evidence to expand their understanding of human bipedalism. This work, according to Lieberman, "will require researchers to continue getting their feet dirty in the field and the lab."

The film opened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 16, 2011[3] and has been officially released November 11, 2011 in the United Kingdom and Ireland[4] and December 2, 2011 in Italy.
[edit] Critical Response

Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reports that 71% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 24 reviews, with an average score of 5.8/10.

Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph stated, ?Rarely does a horror film make the back of your neck tingle with the calibre of its performances as well as its jumps and jolts ? but The Awakening, a beautifully mounted ghost story in the style of The Turn of the Screw, provides chills of both kinds.?

The movie is set in 1921 England where Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) is a published author on supernatural hoaxes who works with the police to expose charlatans and debunk supernatural phenomenon, having begun her foray into her profession upon the death of her lover in World War I. Upon a visit from Robert Malory (Dominic West), a teacher from a boarding school with the request to investigate the recent death of a student and how it is related to sightings of a ghost of a child, she travels to the school hoping to explain the sightings and the death. The ghostly sightings are at first thought to be a prank played by one of the boys at the school. ? Wikipedia

If you enjoyed movies like The Others with Nicole Kidman, and Haunted starring Aidan Quin and Kate Beckinsale, you will really enjoy the Awakening. We watched it last night and it is a stylish thriller more so than an outright horror with many twists and turns that keep you wondering almost right up to the end. Dominic West is the star of this film, his understated performance is chilling.

For those of you that have seen ghosts (real ones not the movie variety), and especially the kind that you don?t outright recognize as ghost when you first see them..watch this movie if you like a good chill.
It also made me remember (yep here we go, if you are only reading this post for the movie review, stop reading NOW, if you like a bit of a ghost story, do read on) a experience I had a few years ago. Art does imitate life really well in this movie ;)

I was in a smallish mall with a friend, we were just meandering about and basically doing window shopping. My friend went into a shop, and I decided to wait outside for her, and whilst doing so I was looking at the display in the window of the next little shop.

I felt a soft tap on my shoulder, and as I turned around, there was a man in his late 50?s who politely asked me if I have seen his son. He took out an old black and white 70?s looking photo of a young man who bore a strong resemblance to him. He looked deep into my eyes, as if searching for the answers. By then my friend have come out of the shop, and she joined us. She asked the slightly lost looking man if he needed help or assistance as she shot me a knowing glance..the type that says ? he must have senile dementia or Alzheimer?s or something?. I shook my head and mimed ?listen? to her.

He told how his wife dropped him off at the mall everyday at the same time, and that he is there to look for his son who disappeared many years ago, and now it seems his wife of late is starting to forget to pick him up regularly too. By then I realised that the man standing in front of us and talking to us was a ghost, and a lost and confused one at that. My friend, who did not believe in ?ghosts and psychic mumbo jumbo? as she called it, grabbed my arm because by then she realised something was really wrong too. In that moment that I turned towards her, the man vanished, my friend saw him vanish and described it as the man just ?winking out like a light that was switched off?.

I knew before then, but only ever in retrospect, that I have mistaken ghosts for the living, but this was a first for me too. One actually walking up to me and asking for assistance.

Pauly D Reintroduces Himself On 'The Pauly D Project'

'I'm really excited just to show the world that side of me,' Pauly says of 'Jersey Shore' spin-off, premiering tonight at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

After five seasons of "Jersey Shore," we know DJ Pauly D pretty well. He's the ultimate prankster who never beefs with anyone, takes crucial care of his beloved sneaker collection and has a crunchy blowout that defies all laws of physics.

But the Rhode Island kid has many more sides to show us, and he plans to put them all on display in his spin-off show, "The Pauly D Project." When asked what parts of his personality "Shore" watchers are missing out on, Pauly told MTV News' Sway, "Just how much I am all about my home, my family and my friends — you don't really see that."

In the show — which debuts tonight (March 29) at 10:30 p.m. ET, right after the reboot of "Punk'd" — viewers will tag along as Pauly hits Las Vegas for his DJ residency at the Palms Hotel and Casino with his whole crew in tow, including turntable inspiration Biggie, bodyguard Jerry and wingman Ryan. They'll also get to see Pauly go home to visit his friends and family and sign a mind-blowing record deal with the G-Note division of 50 Cent's G-Unit Records.

Oh, and did we mention he also hits the road as the opening act for Britney Spears? Yeah, buddy.

"Now you get to see me take my closest friends on the road with me from Rhode Island, and you get to see Rhode Island," he said. "I'm really excited just to show the world that side of me."

His hookup with 50 is already paying dividends, as the G-Unit General recently tapped Pauly to help out in the first commercial for the rapper's Street King energy drink. Pauly jumped in front of the camera with 50 and legendary comedian Joan Rivers for what the MC said was a "real oddball group" intended to target a wide range of potential audiences.

Don't miss the premiere of ""The Pauly D Project" tonight at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, following the reboot of "Punk'd"! For continuing "Pauly" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

Women in Leadership, Miami | The Miami Times

In honor of Women?s History Month, the Liberty City-based non-profit organization Women in Leadership, Miami hosted a domestic violence awareness event at Blessed Catering Banquet Hall on Thursday, March 22nd. The event brought together experts about domestic violence from the social service, law enforcement and judicial fields.

?This fight to end domestic violence is a fight we all have to engage in,? said Rep. Cynthia Stafford, who was one of the event?s featured speakers.

According to national surveys, 22 to 25 percent of all women will become victims of domestic violence at least once in their lives.

Paulette Richards, the organizer for Women in Leadership, Miami said the organization hosted the Domestic Violence Awareness event to teach women and men how to end such abusive relationships and to prevent them from entering such relationships.

?We don?t want to wait until our teens ? our young girls are victims before we get to talk to them about this,? Richards said.

The event also served as a kick off event for a series of future workshops dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence, in particular raising awareness among young men and women and teens and even adolescents.

In spite of its prevalence, many people remain ignorant of many aspects of domestic violence including why victims remain in such abusive relationships.

?Domestic violence is all about power and control,? said Rose Taylor, a counselor for Safe Space Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping domestic violence victims. ?Domestic violence has nothing to do with love.?

According to Officer Mariline Nelson, victims stay for a variety of reasons including because they have children, because they own property and other assets with their abusers or simply because they have no access to any funds.

In keeping with the event?s theme of prevention, some speakers also explained the origins of many abusive relationship.

?Before the domestic violence even gets physical, the abuser will beat down your self-esteem and typically people will pick on victims who already have low self-esteem,? said Nelson. And, ?once he beats you down psychologically, then he will beat you down physically.?

And lest people believe that they are immune or that they would never become victims of domestic violence, Taylor explained that this form of abuse affects everyone across racial, economic, age and even gender lines.

?A lot of people have become so accustomed to some forms of abuse that they have become desensitized,? she said, noting that even cursing or yelling at someone is a form of verbal abuse.

She further explained, ?And once you open yourself to one type of abuse than it?s easier to abuse you.?

George Zimmerman's dad says Travyon told his son, 'You're gonna die now'

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell shows newly tape of what Zimmerman's father says his son told him about the final moments before George Zimmerman killed him. Benjamin Crump, the head attorney for Trayvon Martin's family, and Natalie Jackson, co-counsel for the Martin family, share their reaction on The Last Word.

By msnbc.com staff

On FOX Orlando Wednesday evening, Robert Zimmerman, the father of the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, said his son was the victim. He said that Martin told George Zimmerman, "You're gonna die now, or you're gonna die tonight."

?George was going to the store, and he saw someone in his community that he did not recognize as living there,? Robert Zimmerman, a retired judge, said. ??Because there had been a lot of break-ins in the area, he thought that was suspicious that someone would not be walking on the street or the sidewalk, but they'd be walking right behind the townhomes.?

Robert Zimmerman said that his son, George Zimmerman, 28, then called a non-emergency number to report this stranger. He lost sight of the teen as he looked for an address to report to police, Robert Zimmerman told the FOX affiliate.

?It?s my understanding that at that point Trayvon Martin walked up to him, asked him, ?Do you have a ? beep ? problem?? George said ?No, I don?t have a problem?.?

The elder Zimmerman said that as his son started to reach for his cell phone, Martin, 17, punched him in the nose, knocking the larger man to the pavement. ?

For the first time, we are seeing what the shooter, George Zimmerman, looked like immediately after the killing of Trayvon Martin. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell gets analysis on the newly released surveillance video from ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman, Joy-Ann Reid, managing editor of TheGrio.com, Eugene O'Donnell, former NYPD detective and Richard Kurtz, funeral director who saw Trayvon's body.

?Trayvon Martin got on top of him and just started beating him, in the face, in his nose, hitting his head on the concrete,? Robert Zimmerman said.

That?s when Martin spotted George Zimmerman?s gun, Robert Zimmerman said.

?Trayvon Martin said something to the effect of, ?You're gonna die now,? or ?You're gonna die tonight,? something to that effect.?

When the interviewer asked about Martin?s girlfriend, who said that he told her that he was being followed, Robert Zimmerman said he didn?t believe her.

He replied: ?I don't believe she was on the phone with him, and I find it very strange with the publicity involved with this that all of the sudden, after three weeks, someone would remember that they were on the phone. I believe the FBI and others investigating this will find that that did not happen.?

Trayvon Martin was shot in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and more witnesses are coming forward to describe what they saw. A 13-year-old who saw the shooting described seeing a man screaming on the ground before the gun went off. Cheryl Brown, the mother of the eyewitness, and attorney Alisia Adamson join Politics Nation.

The family of a 13-year-old witness told Al Sharpton Thursday morning a different perspective. Although he did not witness the shooting, he heard it and said that he heard crying and that when the gun went off, the whining ceased.

Zimmerman, a self-declared neighborhood watch volunteer, fatally shot Martin on Feb. 26 in what he called an act of self-defense. Within weeks, the story started drawing nationwide attention and Sanford, Fla. Police were accused of bungling the investigation for not arresting Zimmerman. ?

Zimmerman, meantime, is in hiding. His father told FOX Orlando that he is not doing well.

SKorea warns it might shoot down NKorean rocket

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Seoul warned Monday that it might shoot down a North Korean rocket if it passes over South Korean territory, as worries about what Washington calls a long-range missile test overshadowed an international nuclear security summit.

Nearly 60 world leaders gathered Monday in Seoul to talk about ways to keep nuclear material out of the hands of terrorists. But North Korea has dominated attention in Northeast Asia since announcing earlier this month that it would send a satellite into space aboard a long-range rocket.

North Korea calls the launch part of its peaceful space program and says a new southerly flight path is meant to avoid other countries; previous rockets have been fired over Japan. Washington and Seoul, however, say the multistage rocket is meant to test delivery systems for long-range missiles that could be mounted with nuclear weapons.

"We are studying measures such as tracking and shooting down (parts) of a North Korean missile in case they stray out of their normal trajectory" and violate South Korean territory, said Yoon Won-shik, a vice spokesman at the Defense Ministry.

"We cannot help viewing (the launch) as a very reckless, provocative act" that undermines peace on the Korean peninsula, he said.

The South Korean and U.S. militaries know that North Korea has moved the main body of the rocket into a building at a site near the village of Tongchang-ri in North Phyongan province and that it is making preparations for a launch, Yoon said. He said the two allies' militaries are closely monitoring the situation, but he didn't elaborate on the North's preparations.

The Tongchang-ri launch site is about 35 miles (50 kilometers) from the Chinese border city of Dandong. Analysts describe it as a new, more sophisticated site that would allow the North to fire the rocket from the west coast to avoid sending it over other countries.

President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak urged North Korea in a joint news conference Sunday to immediately stop its launch plans, warning they would deal sternly with any provocation. Obama said the move would jeopardize a deal settled last month in which the U.S. would ship food aid to the North in exchange for a nuclear freeze.

The launch preparations come as North Koreans and new leader Kim Jong Un mark 100 days since the death of Kim's father, Kim Jong Il.

North Korea says its launch is set for sometime around celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the April 15 birth of late President Kim Il Sung, who was Kim Jong Il's father and the current leader's grandfather.

Obama is also pressuring China to use its influence to press North Korea to put off the launch.

A Chinese government-backed disarmament expert said Monday that the launch shouldn't be allowed to dominate discussions at the summit, in an apparent bid to divert pressure on Beijing to convince Pyongyang to abandon its plans.

"I think North Korea did this to overshadow our talks about nuclear security. We shouldn't fall for their trick," said China Arms Control and Disarmament Association head Li Hong.

China is North Korea's biggest source of diplomatic support and economic assistance, although China says its leverage over Pyongyang is limited by the government's unpredictable nature and Beijing's overriding concern for stability along its northeastern border.

However, in a show of Beijing's worry, China summoned North Korea's ambassador earlier this month to warn of threats to peace in Asia and called on all sides to exercise "cool and restraint."

Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his South Korean counterpart on Monday and "shared concerns" about the rocket announcement, Lee's office said in a statement. South Korea "asked China to actively make efforts for the cancellation of North Korea's rocket launch plans, and the two sides agreed to continue to closely cooperate," it said.

Obama was to meet with Hu later in the day.

The U.N. Security Council condemned North Korea's last long-range rocket launch in 2009. Pyongyang responded by abandoning six-nation nuclear disarmament talks and, weeks later, carrying out a nuclear test, its second.

Acne No More Tips

Acne breakouts are a skin condition which influences more than our skin. Though it impacts other regions of our bodies apart from the face, it is usually concentrated there. It typically starts off during the early teen many years at the same time when young people are the most at risk of picture issues.

For people who are at risk of outbreaks of zits, it is vital to prevent too much lighlty critical in the face. The bacterias which causes zits (Propionibacterium zits) can be a normal inhabitant over a person?s encounter. This harmful bacteria does not lead to pimples in anticipation of eventually it might be trapped inside of a person?s hair follicles. If a particular person touches their confront excessively, this may force the harmful bacteria into these openings and develop acne.

Steer clear of the sun throughout an acne breakouts breakout. The sunshine can hurt your epidermis in many ways. You need to in particular steer clear of it through an zits breakout. Sunlight may make your acne breakouts much even worse, raising inflammation and ensuing in irritation. When you absolutely has to be out below the sun for the prolonged period of time, make sure you use sunscreen.

Even though it can appear counterintuitive, if you want to have clear, radiant complexion, steer clear of cleaning your face too often. Most skin treatment professionals aim that you rinse the face, just one single to 2 times a day. Washing it more often, can frequently dry out our skin, which can result in pimples.

Constipation is connected to mature pimples. If you suffer from from bouts of bowel wrongdoing, and get observe far more acne breakouts the problem may possibly be significant. Take a look at your diet program and include food items that will help your constipation and seek out help through your health care professionals to determine if there exists a weblink. Always keeping healthy on the inside can help avoid extra outbreaks.

Skin troubles for example pimples in the teenager several years triggers a lot of teenagers to develop a terrible self appearance. New synthetic biology technique boosts microbial production of diesel fuel

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Significant boosts in the microbial production of clean, green and renewable biodiesel fuel has been achieved with the development of a new technique in synthetic biology by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). This new technique -- dubbed a dynamic sensor-regulator system (DSRS) -- can detect metabolic changes in microbes during the production of fatty acid-based fuels or chemicals and control the expression of genes affecting that production. The result in one demonstration was a threefold increase in the microbial production of biodiesel from glucose.

"The DSRS is an amazing and powerful new tool, the first example of a synthetic system that can dynamically regulate a metabolic pathway for improving production of fatty acid-based fuels and chemicals while the microbes are in the bioreactor," says Jay Keasling, CEO of JBEI and one of the world's foremost practitioners of synthetic biology, who led this research.

Keasling, who also serves as the Associate Laboratory Director for Biosciences at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is the corresponding author of a paper describing this research in Nature Biotechnology. The paper is titled "Design of a dynamic sensor-regulator system for production of FAbased chemicals and fuels." Co-authors are Fuzhong Zhang and James Carothers of JBEI's Fuels Synthesis Division, which is directed by Keasling.

The need for new transportation fuels that are renewable and can be produced in a sustainable fashion has never been more urgent. Scientific studies have consistently shown that liquid fuels derived from plant biomass are one of the best alternatives if a cost-effective means of commercial production can be found. Major research efforts to this end are focused on fatty acids -- the energy-rich molecules in plant cells that have been dubbed nature's petroleum. Fatty acids now serve as the raw materials not only for biodiesel fuel, but also for a wide range of important chemical products including surfactants, solvents and lubricants.

"Microbial production of fuels and chemicals from fatty acids is a greener and sustainable alternative to chemical synthesis," says Zhang, who is the lead author of the Nature Biotechnology paper. "However, high productivities, titers and yields are essential for microbial production of these chemical products to be economically viable, particularly in the cases of biofuels and low-value bulk chemicals."

Hampering microbial production of fatty acid-based chemicals has been metabolic imbalances during product synthesis.

"Expression of pathway genes at too low a level creates bottlenecks in biosynthetic pathways, whereas expression at too high a level diverts cellular resources to the production of unnecessary enzymes or intermediate metabolites that might otherwise be devoted to the desired chemical," Zhang says. "Furthermore, the accumulation of these enzymes and intermediate metabolites can have a toxic effect on the microbes, reducing yield and productivity."

Using the tools of synthetic biology, there have been several strategies developed to meet this challenge but these previous strategies only provide static control of gene expression levels.

"When a gene expression control system is tuned for a particular condition in the bioreactor and the conditions change, the control system will not be able to respond and product synthesis will suffer as a result," Zhang says.

The DSRS responds to the metabolic status of the microbe in the bioreactor during synthesis by sensing key intermediate metabolites in an engineered pathway. The DSRS then regulates the genes that control the production and consumption of these intermediates to allow their delivery at levels and rates that optimize the pathway for maximum productivity as conditions change in the bioreactor.

"Nature has evolved sensors that can be used to sense the biosynthetic intermediate, but naturally-occurring regulators will rarely suffice to regulate an engineered pathway because these regulators were evolved to support host survival, rather than making chemicals in large quantity," Zhang says.

To create their DSRS, Zhang, Keasling and Carothers focused on a strain of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria engineered at JBEI to produce diesel fuel directly from glucose. E. coli isa well-studied microorganism whose natural ability to synthesize fatty acids and exceptional amenability to genetic manipulation make it an ideal target for biofuels research. In this latest work, the JBEI researchers first developed biosensors for a key intermediate metabolite -- fatty acyl-CoA -- in the diesel biosynthetic pathway. They then developed a set of promoters (segments of DNA) that boost the expression of specific genes in response to cellular acyl-CoA levels. These synthetic promoters only become fully activated when both fatty acids and the inducer reagent known as "IPTG" are present.

"For a tightly regulated metabolic pathway to maximize product yields, it is essential that leaky gene expressions from promoters be eliminated," Zhang says. "Since our hybrid promoters are repressed until induced by IPTG, and the induction levels can be tuned automatically by the FA/acyl-CoA level, they can be readily used to regulate production of biodiesel and other fatty acid-based chemicals."

Introducing the DSRS into the biodiesel-producing strain of E.coli improved the stability of this strain and tripled the yield of fuel, reaching 28-percent of the theoretical maximum. With further refinements of the technique, yields should go even higher. The DSRS should also be applicable to the microbial production of other chemical products, both fatty acid-based and beyond.

"Given the large number of natural sensors available, our DSRS strategy can be extended to many other biosynthetic pathways to balance metabolism, increase product titers and yields, and stabilize production hosts," Zhang says. "It should one day be possible to dynamically regulate any metabolic pathway, regardless of whether a natural sensor is available or not, to make microbial production of commodity chemicals and fuels competitive on a commercial scale."

This research was supported in part by the DOE Office of Science, and in part by the National Science Foundation through the Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center (SynBERC).

Nothing says spring equinox like Marimekko

Google celebrates the spring equinox with a colorful doodle based on the floral and fauna designs of Marimekko, a Finnish company renowned for its bold 1960s patterns. ??

Google celebrates the spring equinox ? the ?first day of spring ? with a splash of colors and designs by Marimekko, the Finnish design house.

If you are a fan of "Sex and the City," shop at Crate & Barrel, or remember the 1960 sartorial choices of Jacqueline Kennedy, you will recognize Marimekko's distinctive patterns. ??

Marimekko embrace of bold colors and design began in 1951. It was the middle of the post-World War II reconstruction, and?founders Vilio and Armi Ratia tapped into Finland's longing for a fresh start and brighter colors.

Marimekko products ? the name literally means "Mary?s dress" in Finnish ? ?first gained fame beyond Scandinavia in 1957 when the company was invited to to a fashion exhibition in Milan, Italy. The show was cancelled, but the garments were showcased by Giorgio Armani, then store manager of Rinascente,?a luxury department store in Milan.?

Ratia?s entrepreneur acuteness combined with bold textile designs would transform the company into ??one of the true icons of a very particular era: the idealistic, vibrant days of the 1960s? wrote Ivar Ekman in the New York Times.

With the vision of pioneering Finnish textile designers Maija Isola and Vuokko Nurmesniemi, Marimekko introduced bold fabrics that revolutionized the industry and became synonymous with dynamic women.

Ms. Isola designed the famous Unikko (poppy) print pattern in bold red, pink, and black on white, a pattern still in production.? Nurmesniemi created the red-and-white striped Jokapoika shirt, a landmark product in the company?s history.

Marimekko entered the American market via its exclusive commercial representative, architect Benjamin C. Thompson, who displayed Marimekko products prominently in his Design Research retail stores.? However, it was Jacqueline Kennedy who gave them nationwide fame during the 1960 presidential campaign when she was featured in a Life magazine cover wearing a Marimekko dress. ??

The company?s expansion continued and Crate and Barrel established a lasting business relationship with Marimekko that goes back in 1966.

Marimekko's own catalogue consists of clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags, and other accessories.?

During the 1990s, the company experienced financial woes that brought it one step short of bankruptcy. But under the strong stewardship of Kirsti Paakkanen, Marimekko regained financial footing and its brand momentum.?

In the late 1990s, the company resurged in popularity in the US with the help of the TV series "Sex and the City" when the main character, Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), repeatedly wore Marimekko clothes.

These days, with the rediscovery of the 1960s and 1970s fashion, Marimekko is again in the spotlight. ??We have realized that hard-edged modernism needs softening, so that it gets a human feel. Marimekko does that very well," said design historian Charlotte Fiell, according to the New York Times.

The Helsinki-headquartered company has 90 stores around the globe.?

TAYLOR: Plan to tackle $650,000 golf deficit awaits approval

TAYLOR ? The big challenge for the city?s two golf courses isn?t unique ? increase revenue, bring down costs and do so in an economy where recreational funds for everyone are dwindling by the minute.

On Monday, the golf course fund deficit plan was submitted for City Council approval, addressing a $652,221 deficit with a five-year projection. If approved, it will be submitted with an approved general fund deficit elimination plan to the state Treasury Department for approval.

If the Treasury Department is not satisfied with what is submitted by April 9, a recommendation to cut 25 percent of the city?s state aid will be put in place with other penalties also possible.

While Jeff Dobek ? the Golf, Parks and Recreation Director ? and the city have long known about the golf fund?s current assets-to-current liabilities deficit, the state overlooked it.

The Treasury Department hand-delivered a letter saying it ?inadvertently? left the fund off its first deficit elimination notice.

While the city?s overall plan is more difficult, dealing with an estimated $5 million deficit, growing revenue for Lakes of Taylor and Taylor Meadows golf clubs which, like many assets, is depreciating every year, also is no small feat.

?I won?t say we?re doing great, but we are making a positive impact,? Dobek said. ?We have a long way to go. My thrust is operating cash flow positive. That?s revenue in and revenue out.?

Dobek?s plan is the latest incarnation that started before he took over the courses in 2010. While he oversaw the previous plan, Dobek, a certified public account, drew up the latest plan with Dean Philo, outgoing director of budget and finance, in January.

Jenetta Kregel, director of budget and finance, said that Dobek?s plan is an improvement over the previous one.

?It?s a good plan; it?s a conservative plan,? she said. ?There are no wild guesses about ridiculous revenues. Jeff did a good job of being conservative.? Continued...

A big win for Dobek was getting the fund?s operating cash flow out of the red. In 2011, for the first time since 2007, the fund?s revenues minus expenditures was positive $97,400. In 2009, the amount was nearly negative-$305,000 and last year, negative-$120,000.

The golf fund no longer receives Tax Increment Finance Authority funds for improvements. In 2007, the city received $600,000, which brought the fund into positive numbers.

Another new wrinkle to deal with was ?Other Post-Employment Benefits costs,? which city employees receive upon retirement. The golf fund was now tasked with absorbing those costs, which amounts to about $180,000 a year.

Reducing costs like payroll down to about $1.1 million, down $181,509 from 2010 and almost $300,000 for the last two years, has been one of the department?s challenges.

Another is maintenance, which was $777,700 last year, which went up from $701,429.

Growing business by utilizing social media, networking and with an overall ramp-up in marketing and bringing more money in, is key, Dobek said.

?We need to increase play again,? Dobek said. ?It?s golf outings, weddings. We joined the (Southern Wayne County Regional) Chamber.

?We?re doing more weddings and networking.?

With both courses paid off, one idea is to sell the courses and their banquet facilities. The soft market however, is a major obstacle.

Dobek said a Green Oaks Township course that fell ?in-between? the caliber of Lakes of Taylor and Taylor Meadows recently sold for $750,000 in a bank sale. Continued...

?The courses are cash-flow flush,? he said. ?Everything is going to come back and they are all paid off.

?If you can hold your own through tough times ... a lot of these banks are sitting on golf courses.?
