Wear Your Vegetables: Could Broccoli Hold the Key to Skin Cancer Prevention?

With skin cancer emerging as one of the world's most prevalent forms of cancer, researchers are using every tool at their disposal to fight this disease. The tool of choice for Sally Dickinson? Broccoli.

A diet heavy in cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli sprouts, has shown potential risk-reduction properties for colorectal, prostate and various other forms of cancer. Dickinson's research currently focuses on how sulforaphane ? a naturally occurring compound in broccoli with established chemopreventive properties ? could possibly be used to help patients reduce their risk for skin cancer.

What sets Dickinson's research apart? Instead of eating broccoli to unlock the risk-reduction nutrients, she's asking patients to apply small doses of sulforaphane to their skin. Think of it as a broccoli-based sunscreen additive.

"Even though there is heightened awareness about the need for limited sun exposure and use of sunscreens, we're still seeing far too many cases of skin cancer each year," Dickinson said. "We're searching for better methods to prevent skin cancer in formats that are affordable and manageable for public use. Sulforaphane may be an excellent candidate for use in the prevention of skin cancer caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays."

Dickinson, a research assistant professor in the pharmacology department at the University of Arizona and a UA Cancer Center member, began investigating broccoli's chemopreventive properties when she began her postdoctoral studies in 2005 in the laboratory of Tim Bowden, one of the UACC's most influential research scientists. Prior to joining Dr. Bowden's laboratory, Dickinson earned her doctorate through the Genetics Graduate Interdisciplinary Program at the UA, studying oxidative stress and heart disease.

Under Bowden's guidance, Dickinson pursued her postdoctoral training and built up an impressive list of credentials in her own right. As Dr. Bowden transitions into retirement, Dickinson will take over the majority of his lab's ongoing projects, including this in-depth look into sulforaphane.

"I learned so much from working with Dr. Bowden," Dickinson said. "He is a hypothesis-driven, old-school scientist who quietly extracts the best out of everyone around him. I'm truly honored that he's handing his lab's reins over to me."

So how would topical broccoli-based ointments differ from the products currently available in stores? Dickinson's research shows that sulforaphane is a highly adaptable, highly effective agent when it comes to inhibiting cancer-causing pathways (such as the AP-1 protein), while activating chemoprotective genes (such as the Nrf2 gene).

Her pilot study in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University will test a topical broccoli sprout solution on the skin a group of patients to see if the compound is effective in the context of solar simulated light. Previous studies have shown that the extract is quite safe for both topical and oral administration.

If the research proves to be successful, Dickinson believes this could lead to even more applications for sulforaphane.

"Sulforaphane is the kind of compound that has so many incredible theoretical applications if the dosage is measured properly," Dr. Dickinson said. "We already know that it is very effective in blocking sunburns, and we have seen cases where it can induce protective enzymes in the skin."

Someday, patients with compromised immune systems may be able to apply sulforaphane to their skin in order to reduce their risk of skin cancer. Sulforaphane is one of the many natural products and pharmaceutical agents being explored for use in topical prevention of UV-induced skin cancers through the Chemoprevention of Skin Cancer Program Project Grant, headed by Bowden and UACC's Dr. David Alberts.

Dickinson's research could potentially lead to a day when parents are instructing their children to not only eat their vegetables, but to wear them, as well.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? No one hit the Powerball jackpot this weekend, so the money will roll over and create a roughly $400 million prize for Wednesday's drawing.

The midweek jackpot remains below the record $590.5 million jackpot won in May by an 84-year-old Florida woman. But as it stands, it would be the third-largest Powerball jackpot ever and the fourth-largest lottery prize on record.

Saturday's winning numbers were 21, 24, 36, 42 and 45; the Powerball was 15.

The changes Powerball organizers made to the game last year are coming to roost in the billowing jackpots, with Wednesday's pushing into record territory less than three months after Gloria C. Mackenzie of Zephyrhills, Fla., claimed the biggest Powerball prize ever.

Powerball tickets doubled in price to $2 in January 2012 as part of a plan to help jackpots grow bigger, faster. And when the jackpots reach astronomical levels, ticket sales take off, with jackpots following close behind.

If Wednesday's jackpot doesn't top $400 million, a single winner choosing the cash option would collect $230.3 million before taxes.

No matter how many people play the game, the odds of matching all six numbers remains 1 in 175.2 million.

Half of the $2 cost of a Powerball ticket goes toward the prizes, the rest to the state lottery organization.

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each state that participates in the game decides how to use the money. Some states earmark the money for a specific purpose, such as education, while others use it in their general funds.

That's right.? I am talking to all of us who have made some kind of fitness goal and as soon as it gets a bit tough we want to quit!? Quitting is always an option but it is an option that will NOT help us meet our fitness goals. Let's choose to look at our option and decision to get in shape as:

Stocks closed modestly higher in thin volume on Friday despite a tepid jobs report. While the data was disappointing, it still showed job growth and may also make the Federal Reserve a bit more hesitant about curtailing its stimulus policies in September.

The U.S. economy created just 162,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in July after a downwardly revised 188,000 in June. The unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent.

The quality of the jobs being created is also an issue. Burt White of LPL Financial pointed out, "Over the last four months we've created 4.2 part-time jobs for every one full-time job. That trend is not going in a good direction."

After spending the session clawing back morning losses, the Dow Jones Industrial Average?finished 30 points higher at 15,658.36. The?S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended with slight gains, while both the S&P and Dow set new closing highs.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, fell to 12.1.

Among S&P sectors, consumer discretionary and materials stocks led the gainers. Energy fell after disappointing earnings from oil giant Chevron.

"I think the market grinds higher," Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management, said. "We're not going to go up another 18 percent as we have since the first of the year in my opinion. But I think the market ends higher than where it is today."

The jobs data may push back the timing, or at least scale, of a potential Fed tapering of its bond-buying program.

St. Louis Fed president James Bullard said in a speech Friday that the central bank "needs to see more data" before it makes a decision about slowing the pace of its $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program.

Some economists, meanwhile, see just a small reduction in bond purchases next month.

"I think they'll only do $15 billion because the evidence will be still somewhat ambiguous," BNY Mellon economist Richard Hoey told CNBC of the potential cutback in bond purchases. "I don't think they'll do $25 billion. That's too strong a measure."

In other data, U.S. consumer spending increased 0.5 percent in June, lifted by automobile purchases and higher gasoline prices. Personal incomes rose 0.3 percent. June factory orders, meanwhile, rose 1.5 percent after an upwardly revised 3 percent in May.

Cable stocks rose on reports that Cox Communications and Charter Communications held merger talks. Cablevision was up sharply as well.

Viacom, meanwhile, reported a 14 percent rise in revenue helped by strong advertising and CBS affiliate fees at its cable networks. The media giant also doubled its stock buyback program to $20 billion.

LinkedIn shares surged following better-than-expected earnings and after a number of brokers hiked their price targets on the social networking firm.

AIG stock rose after the company posted strong earnings and said it would return capital to shareholders.

But oil giant?Chevron posted a 26 percent decline in net income?due to lower oil prices and maintenance work at its U.S. refineries.

Aaron Sinift's ?Five-Year Plan? | BU Today | Boston University

In the slideshow above, view pages from the Five-Year Plan book, a project organized by Aaron Sinift (CFA?02) to help support artists as well as artisans in India.

At seven, Aaron Sinift (CFA?02) told his mother, ?Someday, I?m going to change my name to Harry Whitecloud and travel to India.? When he finally made the trip at the age of 24, he felt as though ?I was returning to an essential facet of my heart.? He loved India?s color, vibrancy, and culture, so different from his native Iowa. He was distressed by the country?s extreme poverty and drawn to the work of the ashrams, service institutions promoted by Mahatma Gandhi to help India?s rural poor maintain self-sufficiency by spinning and weaving khadi cloth. ?The khadi is so beautiful and so fragrant, and rough in certain ways,? Sinift says. ?Gandhi wore it, and it has a lot of soul.?

Sinift bought a traditional jhola [jho-la] shoulder bag made from khadi cloth and printed with an image of Gandhi. ?I was attracted by the tender awkwardness of the artworks created by anonymous ashram artists for common people. These are authentic Pop Art creations from the very roots of the land.? As a CFA graduate student, he hung the jhola on the wall of his studio and found that his bold, colorful paintings began to take on some of the jhola?s themes. His advisor, John Walker, a CFA professor of art, noticed the change. ?That bag is not an artifact,? Walker said. ?It?s a living work of art.? This casual line stuck with Sinift, and it would direct the course of his career.

After graduating from CFA, Sinift took a job as the preparator at a New York gallery, Feature Inc., and painted in his Brooklyn studio with the hope of being discovered. ?I was seeking the approval of people who didn?t know I existed, and I decided to reinvent myself into the person I wanted to become. I wanted to be an artist who serves those in need and to create a community in which people feel connected to one another.?

Sinift invited the ashrams to create a book made entirely from khadi cloth featuring screen- and block-printed artworks by 24 artists from 8 countries. He commissioned well-known artists like Francesco Clemente, Yoko Ono, and Chris Martin, as well as emerging artists such as Tamara Gonzales, Tim Wehrle, and Pushpa Kumari to contribute one page each. He called this project the ?Five-Year Plan? and aimed to print 180 copies, which would be packaged in handmade jhola bags.

In accordance with Gandhi?s philosophy, the Five-Year Plan would need to be entirely nonprofit and autonomous, so instead of seeking institutional backing to assist with the printing cost, Sinift raised more than half of the funds by preselling the book online. ?Citizen artists need to find ways to fund their work with modest means,? he says. ?When we do so, we realize that we?re not helpless. We realize how much power we have.? Sinift pledged the first $25,000 revenue to Doctors Without Borders and the remaining proceeds to the next Five-Year Plan project. But first, he needed the cloth.

Sinift traveled to the outskirts of New Delhi to find an ashram that would collaborate on the Five-Year Plan. During a visit to an ashram in Meerut, Sinift met with the director, ?a stony guy who was used to people coming to buy their cloth because it?s cheap. When I showed him the drawing that I made for the cover of the book, his eyes began to water. He saw that I respected his labor and was not there to take advantage of it. That was the moment I knew I was on the right track.?

Sinift commissioned 1.4 kilometers, almost a mile, of khadi from the Manav Seva Sannidhi Ashram in Modinagar, which employs 700 spinners, the majority of whom are women over the age of 55. The ashram also employs 45 weavers (mostly men over the age of 45), and 35 helpers. Most of these workers are Dalit Muslim or low-caste Hindu, and are the sole providers for their families. Spinning and weaving the khadi for the Five-Year Plan created more than 2,400 days of work for the ashram and kept 100 families employed for a month.

The artists, too, benefited from the Five-Year Plan. ?Most of the artists are very poor,? Sinift says. Each artist received a copy signed by all of the contributors, and ?they can sell their copies of the book and use the proceeds however they wish.? Indian painter Pushpa Kumari, whose intricate work is inspired by stories from the Hindu epics, is using the proceeds from the sale of her book to help build her house. True to Gandhi?s ideals, Sinift has not profited from the Five-Year Plan; to support his life and his art, he works part time at the Smithsonian?s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Katzen Arts Center at American University, which he finds as fulfilling as his work with the ashrams.

And Sinift is just getting started. He plans eventually to take the project a step further by beginning a book from seeds, commissioning organic farmers in India to grow one ton of cotton that will be spun into the thread used to weave the khadi. He will invite the farmers, spinners, and weavers to contribute original artworks, completing a ?sustainable cycle of collaboration.?

?The ashram workers provide incredible value to the world by supporting Gandhian ethics and helping people to maintain self-sufficiency,? Sinift says. ?The people in Doctors Without Borders dedicate their lives to saving people in crisis. The Five-Year Plan gives artists a chance to make a tangible contribution to the common good, simply by doing what they already do naturally. If people just give what they do naturally, everyone can live together with dignity.?

Bangladesh court rules top Islamic party illegal

DHAKA (Reuters) - A Bangladesh court on Thursday declared as illegal the country's main Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, effectively banning it from national elections due to be held early next year.

The ruling that the registration of Jamaat as a political party conflicted with the country's secular constitution immediately triggered violent protests by party supporters.

Hundreds of activists blocked a major road and smashed vehicles in Pabna district, northwest of the capital, police said. Further protests were anticipated throughout the afternoon and evening.

Jamaat immediately appealed to the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict, senior defense lawyer Abdur Razzak told reporters. The party would be barred from contesting elections if the Supreme Court upholds the verdict.

More than 100 people have been killed in protests and counter-protests since January, when a tribunal set up by the government to investigate alleged abuses in the country's 1971 war of independence sentenced to death in absentia a former senior Jamaat figure.

Jamaat opposed Bangladeshi independence from Pakistan in the war but denies accusations that some of its leaders committed murder, rape and torture during the conflict.

Lithuanian teen sets record in swim worlds prelims

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? A year after her breakout performance at the Olympics, Ruta Meilutyte is even faster than before.

The 16-year-old Lithuanian set a meet record in morning heats of the 100-meter breaststroke at the world championships Monday with a quicker swim than the ones that got her gold in London.

Meilutyte hit the wall in 1 minute, 4.52 seconds, Jessica Hardy of the United States was second in 1:05.18 and Yuliya Efimova of Russia touched third in 1:05.24.

At the Olympics, Meilutyte won in 1:05.47, although she swam faster in the semifinals at 1:05.21.

Meanwhile in other prelims, American teenager Missy Franklin got her first individual event off to a strong start by leading the 100 backstroke in 59.13 seconds.

Defending champion Lotte Friis qualified first in the marathon-like 1,500 in 15:49.18, just ahead of American favorite and 16-year-old Katie Ledecky, who was 0.08 behind.

In a low-key 200 free without Olympic silver medalists Sun Yang and Park Taei-hwan, Robert Renwick of Britain qualified first in 1:46.88, Olympic champion Yannick Agnel of France advanced in sixth and defending champion Ryan Lochte reached the semifinals in ninth.

Also, Ashley Delaney of Australia led the men's 100 back in 53.60.

Four finals were scheduled for the evening session on Day 2 in the pool: the men's 100 breast, the women's 100 butterfly, the men's 50 fly and the women's 200 individual medley.

There could also be some more fireworks from Meilutyte.

If the Britain-based Lithuanian swims just 0.08 quicker in the semifinals later or in Tuesday's final, she'll break Hardy's world record of 1:04.45 set in 2009 at the height of the rubberized suit era.

However, Meilutyte doesn't have two-time defending champion Rebecca Soni to push her, as the American is taking the year off.

But Hardy appears in form.

"I blew my expectations out of the water already, so it's going to be fun," Hardy said. "That was just getting the first-race jitters out."

Franklin got her jitters out by leading off when the Americans won the 4x100 free relay Sunday. That was first up in her Michael Phelps-like load of eight events.

"It was a perfect way to start off the meet," Franklin said. "But I'm really excited to get some backstroke in. So 100 back is the perfect event to come off the relay from."

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary qualified second behind Franklin in 59.40 and Elizabeth Pelton of the U.S. was third in 59.94.

"Awesome. I'm good with that, 59.1 is definitely better than I wanted to be this morning," Franklin said.

Hosszu plans to scratch from this event to focus on racing China's Ye Shiwen in the 200 IM final.

Franklin won the 100 back in 58.33 at the London Games.

Can she approach the world record of 58.12 set by Britain's Gemma Spofforth in 2009?

"I haven't even thought about it," Franklin said. "I'm just going to go out there and swim and have fun. When you focus too much on a number you kind of lose what swimming is all about. So I'm just going to go out there and see what I can do."

Ledecky, however, is clearly eyeing Kate Ziegler's world record of 15:42.54 in the 1,500 ? a non-Olympic event.

"I definitely have a lot left in the tank," Ledecky said. "I just wanted to win my heat and swim a controlled race."

Ledecky won the 400 free in a dominating performance Sunday.

"I just carried the energy and excitement from last night into this morning and recovered well," she said.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ? Florida's 825 miles of beaches are coming to a computer near you.

Visit Florida, the state's tourism and marketing arm, begins a four-month journey Wednesday to capture 360-degree images of the state's beaches.

These photos will be integrated into?Google?Maps and will be available to anyone around the world with Internet access.

Two-person Visit Florida teams were trained by?Google?Map experts to capture the images. The teams will walk about 50 miles of beach each week with a backpack that has a camera system on top. The camera has 15 lenses, angled in different directions, so it can capture a complete picture of a location. The images are then stitched together into a 360-degree panoramic photo.

Officials say the images will be viewable on?Google?Maps next year.

Ex-NFL player Larry Johnson sentenced in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- Former NFL running back Larry Johnson pleaded no contest Tuesday to charges that he choked an ex-girlfriend into unconsciousness and left her only in her underwear in a Las Vegas hotel hallway.

The 33-year-old was convicted of domestic violence battery and assault, which are both misdemeanors. A felony charge was dropped as part of a plea deal, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported (http://bit.ly/17B9Nzd ).

Johnson was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay a $345 fine. He must also perform 48 hours of community service and attend six months of counseling.

"I'm just happy to have this behind me and go back to Florida and stay out of trouble for once," Johnson said after the hearing, according to the newspaper.

Johnson was arrested Oct. 5 at a Bellagio hotel room. According to a police report, he and the woman had been drinking alcohol before the altercation, and the woman had marks on her face and bruises on her neck. Johnson had marks on his face that police attributed to the woman fighting him as he choked her.

The woman told officers she passed out and awoke in the 10th floor hallway and knocked on doors until someone called hotel security.

Johnson, who starred for the Kansas City Chiefs but most recently played for the Miami Dolphins in 2011, was arrested several times during his nine-year NFL career.

He was sentenced in March 2009 to two years of probation with a chance to have his record cleared for good behavior after pleading guilty to reduced disturbing the peace charges in separate cases involving two women at two Kansas City nightclubs.

In 2003, Johnson was charged with aggravated assault and misdemeanor battery after being accused of brandishing a gun during an argument with a former girlfriend. The charges were dropped after he completed a domestic violence diversion program.

Massasoit Community College?s fledgling Middleboro campus a success story for college and town

Swing open the doors to the Middleboro campus of Massasoit Community College and there is a good chance you?ll be greeted by Director John Morosco, bearing coffee and snacks.

That personal approach combined with small classes is proving to be a winning strategy for the campus that opened in September 2010.

The new fall semester begins in September. But already there?s an 87 percent increase in the total credit hours students are enrolled for compared to this time last year.

?That school has touched my heart,? said Nicole Kenneally, 22 of Carver. ?It?s a small campus and has a home-like feeling.? Kenneally had been attending a larger college on the North Shore, but said she felt like she was just a number there.

At Massasoit?s downtown Middleboro campus, the student-to-teacher ratio is roughly 15 to 20 students to one professor. Kenneally said with such small classes, students get to know each other, often getting. She added they will often get together for study groups and then hang out.

?The faculty is phenomenal, and the teachers they hire care about students as a person and what you are going to do,? Kenneally said.

The liberal arts major wants to be a social worker. She made dean?s list in the spring and will head back to classes in the fall.

That 87 percent hike in credit hours for fall classes could be due to more new students enrolling or students taking more credit hours.

According to director Morosco, the reason for the campus? success is two-fold.

First, ?the science labs are now open and that?s just been a boon for us. It rounds out what people can take,? Morosco explained.

The personal touch is also a drawing card.

?When we start classes, I try to have snacks and coffee out for everyone,? Morosco said. ?I also greet everyone coming in and talk with them and get to know who they are.?

Liz Franzosa, 26, of Middleboro graduated from Massasoit?s Middleboro campus in May.

For Franzosa, it was a bit of homecoming. The college is housed in a former elementary school that Franzosa attended.

?It was very comforting walking into the school,? Franzosa said. She majored in criminal justice and earned her associate?s degree.

In September, Franzosa will start at Bridgewater State as a junior.

?In the criminal justice program, they had retired and current police officers teaching our classes and they really knew what they were talking about,? Franzosa said.

For Allin Frawley, a Middleboro resident, parent and selectman, Massasoit is a win-win.

?It brings people downtown, it boosts the local economy and it gives kids a chance to take classes without leaving town.?

Professor Irene Duke teaches ASL, an American sign language class at Massasoit?s Middleboro campus, has the small-town location to her students? benefit.

?We go on what I call walkabouts downtown,? said Duke.

There she and her students practice deaf immersion in the neighboring coffee shops, stores and restaurants.

?It?s something we can?t do on the Brockton campus,? she said.

Samsung has no idea what size Android device you want but, by golly, it?s going to find out. Throughout its massive Galaxy lineup, Samsung has hedged its bets on almost every possible device size in an attempt to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

Each great Samsung device has at least one feature that justifies its existence beyond a decimal difference in screen size. A year after movie shooting, Colo. seeks healing

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Some recited the names of the dead. Some did good deeds for their neighbors. Some practiced yoga, walked through nature, or simply talked. And two got married.

Coloradans embraced ways to heal Saturday as they marked the anniversary of the Aurora movie theater massacre with a city-sponsored "Day of Remembrance."

It was one year ago that a gunman opened fire into a packed midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." The rampage lasted less than two minutes but left deep wounds that still ache in Aurora, Colorado's third-largest city which spreads out across the rolling plains on Denver's eastern side.

Twelve people died, including a 6-year-old girl. Seventy were hurt, some of them paralyzed. Countless others inside the theater and out bear the invisible wounds of emotional trauma.

Parents, siblings and survivors of those slain attended a morning ceremony of prayer, song and remembrance outside Aurora's city hall.

Several hundred people ? including police, fire personnel and members of Colorado's congressional delegation ? bowed their heads as the names of dead were read. A small bell tolled after each. The Hinkley High School choir sang "Amazing Grace."

"One year ago, the peace of our community was shattered," Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said. "We are still seeking justice."

"It is important for us to remember that one senseless act does not, cannot and will not define us as a community," Hogan added. "This is a story of resilience, not just of Aurora but of humankind."

Gov. John Hickenlooper told the crowd that many people still struggle with unanswered questions.

"I know I do," Hickenlooper said.

Dr. Camilla Sasson, an emergency room physician at the University of Colorado, struggled through tears as she recounted the efforts of police and medical personnel to save lives.

"It is absolutely a miracle that 58 people survived that night," she said.

Mourners clutched white roses and, as the ceremony ended, laid them beneath a large wreath bearing the inscription, "In memory of those lost and those whose lives were forever changed."

After the ceremony, residents volunteered for projects ? tending a community garden, sorting food bank donations, donating blood. Spiritual and mental health counselors were available, along with art therapy projects and poetry readings.

Eugene Han and Kirstin Davis, both injured in the Aurora shooting, marked the anniversary Saturday afternoon by getting married ? a union that turned July 20 into a celebration. Friends who also survived the shooting took part in the ceremony at Village East Baptist Church in Aurora as senior pastor Robert McClendon gave a prayer for the couple and for those still grieving.

"This time is both happy and sacred," McLendon said.

Several hundred yards from City Hall, people visited 12 crosses erected near the cinema where the attack took place. James Holmes, accused of the shooting, was arrested outside the theater in the aftermath of the rampage.

Holmes has been charged with murder, attempted murder and a list other offenses. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Democratic state Rep. Rhonda Fields, whose district includes the theater, said she is still numb and in mourning.

"It hasn't fully mended after a year," she said.

Fields said she wasn't surprised by that. Her son, Javad Marshall-Fields, and his fiancee were shot to death in 2005 to keep Marshall-Fields from testifying in a murder trial.

"I'm all too familiar to losing someone to gun violence," Fields said.

On Friday and Saturday, Fields and other volunteers read the names of more than 2,500 people killed in gun-related violence in the U.S. since the Newtown, Conn., massacre in December. The last volunteer to read names was Stephen Barton, who was wounded last year in the theater shooting.

Immediately after Barton was finished, about 40 volunteers held a moment of silence at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, the time the theater shooting began. The silence lasted 82 seconds to represent the 12 people killed and the 70 wounded.

The ceremony at Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora was sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, not the city of Aurora. A gun rights group, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, contended the event wrongly politicized a tragedy to promote gun control, so it staged a counter-rally nearby.

Hoping to capitalize on the anniversary, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Action Fund began running a TV ad Saturday in eight cities featuring Barton. After Saturday's Aurora ceremony, some residents had their photo taken with police Chief Dan Oates, whose department won praise for its response a year ago.

"It was a searing event for the police department as well as the whole community," Oates said. But he insisted many officers have recovered from the trauma and want to move on.

"I think we're at that point," Oates said.

Music and arts collective Stereocure is having a series of concerts all summer showcasing our musical acts in our space in Mar Vista. (Check us out online at?www.stereocure.com) We?re looking for visual artists to display in our gallery space during our events.

We?re open to digital art, all forms of visual arts including collage, painting, drawing, prints, photography and mixed media, and interdisciplinary and experimental work.

We are currently seeking proposals for new work to be considered for our 2014 programme. Residencies/exhibitions will run between February and December 2014. We welcome applicants from all creative disciplines.

The Telfer Gallery provides a platform for focused experimentation as well as a space for artists to explore and expand their practice. Each selected individual or group will be offered a period of residency in the space preceding an exhibition, which will be arranged in conversation with the committee.

The Telfer Gallery will provide the following:

? A 60 square metre gallery space

? 24-hour access to gallery space

? A support network encompassing two project managers, gallery committee, and the surrounding 31 artist studios placed within the building

? Marketing and promotion of events including printed materials

? Optional discussion groups and critical development workshops

? Technical and installation support

ING Discerning Eye Calls for Entry (Deadline: September 7, 2013)

Sponsored by ING Commercial Banking, the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is a show of small works independently selected by six prominent figures from the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics.

The 2013 selectors are: Artists, Stephen Farthing RA and Eileen Hogan; collectors, Loyd Grossman OBE (television presenter, gastronome and art historian) and Professor Deborah Swallow (Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art); and critics, Liz Anderson (Arts Editor, The Spectator), and Estelle Lovatt FRSA (art critic and lecturer). The selectors will curate their own section of the exhibition, resulting in six smaller exhibitions within one, each with very distinct personalities.

The uniqueness of having each work chosen by an eminent individual, unlike in a group selected show, has earned the exhibition an excellent reputation among art lovers and collectors alike. Work is selected by open submission and also from artists invited by the selectors. The works of lesser?known artists are given the opportunity to hang alongside the work of more established artists helping to connect hundreds of new artists with new audiences.

Artists may submit up to six works for competition. Painting, prints, drawing, photography and sculpture are all accepted. All works must be for sale and should not exceed 20? (50cm) in their largest dimension. An exhibition of selected works will take place at the Mall Galleries, London from 14 ? 24 November 2013.

Works are submitted to regional collection centres OR on the final hand in dates to the Mall Galleries in London on 6 and 7 September 2013

The Japan Media Arts Festival is a comprehensive festival of Media Arts (=Media Geijutsu) that honors outstanding works from a diverse range of media ? from Animation and comics to media art and games. The festival gives awards in each of its four divisions; Art, Entertainment,Animation, and Manga. It also provides a platform for appreciation of the award-winning and other notable works. Texas Lawmakers Now Hope To Ban Pregnancy Terminations After Approximately 6 Weeks

After coming into the office this morning, I read headlines about three Texas lawmakers with a plan and my heart began to drop. Despite their state already passing one of the most restrictive bills in America regarding abortion, despite the incredibly strong fight against it by thousands of women, these three politicians have a plan to make abortion virtually illegal and, at the very?least, incredibly invasive. How? By banning abortion after the fetus has a heartbeat. When does that happen? At around six weeks.

According to ThinkProgress, ?Reps.?Phil King?(R),?Dan Flynn?(R), and?Geanie Morrison?(R)??filed HB 59?on the same day that Perry signed [SB5].? The bill, which is so severe that it?s divisive even in the anti-choice realm, would criminalize any abortions after the fetus has a heartbeat. This also means that any woman seeking an abortion would need to have an invasive ultrasound ? or a transvaginal probe, in all likelihood. North Dakota already has this law in place; will Texas be next? And if so, who will come after?

Women and men, we can?t ignore this. We can?t let everyone else ignore this. We can?t dismiss it as being something that?s happening ?elsewhere,? because elsewhere is still America, and we are Americans. If this passes, there will be 13,350,000 women who will not be able to obtain abortions after six weeks. We have the responsibility to protect our mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, friends and selves from having their bodies regulated by the government. I realize it sounds like I?m on some sort of soapbox, but?wow, who imagined that in 2013 we would get to the point where ?should women be able to terminate pregnancy from rape?? is even a debated question?

Don?t say ?fuck Texas? and give up; support Texas? women in the same way you would hope they would support you if your rights were the ones under attack.?Don?t pretend this doesn?t exist; that?s what makes these types of bills go through almost unnoticed. It does exist, and it?s not going away unless we all collectively push against it.
