Saturday Morning Breakfast & Baseball: Ozzie Drama, New Rays Ballpark, Ichiro & His Bats, and More

In today's B&B, we look at (more) Ozzie Guillen drama in Miami, a potential new Rays ballpark that won't happen, Ichiro's obsession with his bat care, biased announcers, Glen Perkins going pitch-by-pitch through a save with Joe Posnanski, and the result of Citi Field moving in their fences.

Welcome to Saturday, everyone! With the changes to Twinkie Town and the whole SB Nation, I was going to try to create a new account for myself. You see, I've been logging in through Facebook this whole time, which is why my whole name always appears whenever I author an article or game thread. This morning, I decided to fix that with a new account, and so I came to Twinkie Town with that mission in mind. However, I quickly found that my desired username "Bryz" has already been taken... and then I remembered why. Long ago, I created an account with that username, except I immediately forgot the password. Thus, the username is already in use by myself, ugh. So, it looks like I'll be stuck with most of my full name for now, meaning that I'll remain just as famous as Ryan Rowland-Smith when it comes to baseball and hyphenated last names.

  • Just like in Boston with Bobby Valentine, it's becoming messy down in Miami with Ozzie Guillen. We all know him quite well from his White Sox days, and it looks like his actions just aren't as fun when the team isn't winning. First, let's backtrack a bit. Closer Heath Bell, who was a big Marlins free agent signing last offseason, has been pitching awfully this year. He was stripped of the closer role and despite pitching better of late, hadn't received it back from Ozzie. Bell went on a Miami radio show to complain about Ozzie, saying "It's hard to respect a guy that doesn't tell you the truth." Bell would later say that he was taken out of context, but if this wasn't a big deal, he wouldn't have had to backtrack and say that his words were twisted. Anyway, Ozzie then went on a radio show himself to complain about Bell, and to make it really awkward, the media walked into the clubhouse right as the Marlins team was listening to Ozzie trash Bell on the air. To make it even worse, Ozzie was asked if he respected Bell and his response was, "As a player, yes. As a guy, I don't know." Showtime must be kicking themselves for ending "The Franchise" early with this team, and I bet either Ozzie or Bell will leave the team sometime before next season.
  • Darryl LeClair is a developer in St. Petersburg, FL, and he has an idea on getting a new ballpark for the Tampa Bay Rays. That's not a bad idea, considering that Tropicana Field is essentially Metrodome South, except instead of having a roof that interfered with an outfielder's ability to catch fly balls, it has catwalks that interfere with an outfielder's ability to catch fly balls. However, there are some issues. First, no one knows how the stadium will be funded. Second, the Rays and MLB haven't announced if they even want LeClair working on the ballpark. Third, LeClair's proposed land for the park is only 12 acres (Target Field is built on only 12 acres, but that doesn't mean it's recommended for all parks). Finally, which surprisingly wasn't mentioned in the article, the Rays are contracted to play in Tropicana Field for the rest of eternity until 2027. But hey, good luck to ya, LeClair.
  • Alright, saying he's obsessed was probably the wrong word. It's more like he's meticulous. Ichiro Suzuki recapped how he takes care of his bats, which involves a black case that dehumidifies the bats. Ichiro believes that a bat with too much moisture becomes spongy and "sweaty," which will soften the impact of the bat meeting a baseball. It's a pretty interesting read, especially when we learn that he actually once broke a bat in a fit of anger back in 1999. Even more interesting is that he later called the bat manufacturer to apologize.
  • We have another story on bias and baseball announcers, but last time dealt with race. This time, we're looking at an announcer's bias towards his team he's covering, and you will be absolutely shocked to hear who came out with an easy victory in this department. None other than the man that touts the White Sox, Hawk Harrelson. Yes, it wasn't even close, as Hawk and his partner Steve Stone combined to say 103 biased comments (saying "we," calling the Sox "good guys," his annoying phrases) in a single game, while the 2nd place team was the Cleveland Indians with 23. The link above is the Wall Street Journal article about the study, while this is the tallies for every team in the league. Two things: The Twins ranked rather high (tied for 7th), but Dick 'n' Bert had only 9 biased comments during the game that was analyzed, and I'm shocked the Marlins guys didn't have more during the game (5th, 15 comments). You should watch MLB Network to catch my drift.
  • Our once hated, now beloved reliever Glen Perkins walked Joe Posnanski through his recent save against the Yankees from Wednesday night. The reason Posnanski approached him was to focus on how an athlete bounces back from a significant mistake. In Perk's case, he allowed a solo home run with 2 outs to Andruw Jones that cut the lead to 1, but he bounced back to strike out Jayson Nix to end the game. You get some pretty cool insight on what Perkins does to get ready before an appearance, how he approaches each batter (he doesn't want to know who he's facing until he gets to the mound), and how a player's cleats helped him relax on the mound.
  • Finally, here's another #CrankyBryz rant, but it's tame compared to my last one. After repeated complaints, the New York Mets finally moved in their fences to appease the hitters. Well, it certainly worked, as 47 more home runs were hit this year compared to last. However, the new fences ended up benefiting the opposition slightly more than the Mets, as the road teams hit 25 HR that would not have cleared the old fences, while the Mets hit 21 of those cheap dingers. The reason moving in the fences annoys me is because it's seemingly always done with the home hitters in mind, but it completely ignores the pitchers and the fact that moving the fences will benefit the opponents as well. In this case, while it was a small difference, it helped the Mets' opponents more than the Mets themselves. Target Field is becoming more hitter-friendly this year, but this is still something you should remember the next time the spacious confines of the Twins' home ballpark is mentioned.

The Twins and #SpoilerTour2K12 continues this afternoon against the Tigers. It's my final game for this season, and perhaps I'll see you there!

(AP) ? Europe sure didn't look like a team trailing by four points in the Ryder Cup.

Under a darkening sky, there was still enough light to see the whites of Ian Poulter's bulging eyes and his golf ball disappear into the cup for a fifth straight birdie ? and another crucial point Saturday. There was no mistaking the smile of captain Jose Maria Olazabal, who waited from sunrise to sunset at Medinah for hope that this cup was still within reach.

Right when it looked like the Americans were a lock to win it back, Poulter came through with a performance so remarkable that it was the only match Europe won when it trailed on the back nine. Right before him, Luke Donald matched a clutch shot by Tiger Woods with one that was even better and it kept Woods winless for the first time going into Sunday singles.

Those two matches gave Europe a load of momentum going into the final day, even if all it really changed was the size of the deficit.

The Americans still had a big lead, 10-6. Europe at least had hope.

The endless chants of "USA! USA!" gave way at the end to snappy serenades of "Ole, Ole, Ole" as both sides trudged to their team rooms in darkness, the Europeans in their berry-colored sweaters walking a little taller.

"We're excited about our position," U.S. captain Davis Love III said. "But we know it's not over yet."

That's what Ben Crenshaw said in 1999 at Brookline when the Americans trailed by the same score, and then delivered the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history. That's what Europe faces now.

The message Olazabal had for his team Saturday night was simple.

"Let's go out there and play your socks off."

Olazabal remembers that American comeback as well as anyone. He was warming up on the range when the Americans sent their best players out early and won the first six matches. He was in the decisive match against Justin Leonard, who holed a 45-foot putt on the 17th hole. And he was in the team room in tears with the rest of the Europeans.

Is the Spaniard a big believer in fate?

"I believe momentum will come our way," Olazabal said. "Why not tomorrow?"

Olazabal borrowed a page from that '99 Ryder Cup by loading the top of his singles lineup with his best players. Luke Donald leads off against Bubba Watson, followed by Poulter against Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy against Keegan Bradley and Justin Rose against Phil Mickelson.

Love put Woods in the anchor positions against Francesco Molinari, whom Woods beat in Wales two years ago.

The European strategy was no surprise. Love was at Brookline, too. He realized Europe had no other choice. And he was not the least bit worried that his team would look ahead to winning, or turn tight and play not to lose.

"Even if they were in primary school, they know about 1999, and they know the story," Love said. "They know Ben Crenshaw. They know Justin Leonard. They know what can happen. And they're going to be having the same kind of team meeting we had in '99. 'All right, boys, we've got to win the first six.' And then the game is one."

The final two matches Saturday were a showcase of what the Ryder Cup is all about ? one brilliant shot after another, birdies on every hole, suspense at every turn.

Donald and Sergio Garcia were on the verge of blowing a 4-up lead to hard-charging Woods and Steve Stricker, hanging on when Donald matched two birdies with Woods, including a tee shot into the 17th that plopped down 2 feet from the cup.

Woods, who made five birdies on the back nine for the second straight day without a point to show for it, was thinking more of the big picture.

"Being up four is nice," he said. "We are in a great spot right now to win the cup."

Poulter and McIlroy were 2 down with six holes to play against Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson when McIlroy made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 13th, and Poulter took it from there.

"We had to make birdies, and wow! Five in a row. It was awesome," Poulter said. "I've got the world No. 1 at my side, backing me up. It allowed me to hit some golf shots."

The crowd was still buzzing as it filed out of Medinah, and Poulter grinned.

"It's pretty fun, this Ryder Cup," said Poulter, who raised his career record to 11-3-0.

It's been plenty fun for the Americans, who for the first time have not lost any of the four sessions since the Ryder Cup switched to the current format in 1979. Mickelson and Bradley were flawless in foursomes, matching a Ryder Cup record for largest margin with a 7-and-6 win over Donald and Lee Westwood.

Mickelson and Bradley have been so dominant that they have yet to play the 18th hole in any of their three matches. Bradley became the first rookie since Garcia in 1999 to win his first three matches.

They didn't play in the afternoon, part of the master plan by U.S. captain Davis Love III to make sure his players were fresh for Sunday. Love became the first U.S. captain since 1979 to make sure each of his players sat out at least one match before the final day.

Now, he finds out if it will work.

"We're not disappointed," Love said of the late rally by Europe. "We haven't lost a segment yet, and we're just going to try to keep that string going."

Despite the last two matches that swung momentum away from them, the Americans only have to look at their 10-6 lead ? their largest since it was 10?-5? in 1981 ? to realize how close they are to winning back that 17-inch gold trophy. They only need 14? points to win. That translates to four wins and a halve in the 12 singles matches, traditionally an American strength.

And they have built this lead without getting a single point from Woods, who has lost his last five matches with Stricker in two Ryder Cups and a Presidents Cup.

"I've played well the last two afternoons and didn't get a point," Woods said. "It's tough. Yesterday I made a bunch of birdies and today I made five on the back nine and it just wasn't enough."

His team has carried him along, though.

Watson and Simpson rolled to a 5-and-4 win in the afternoon, while Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar won for the second straight time in fourballs in a tight match. It was tied going to the par-3 17th, a daunting shot from an elevated tee to a narrow green guarded by water. Johnson hit 8-iron to 20 feet and poured in the birdie putt, setting off the loudest cheer of a raucous week outside Chicago. They halved the 18th for a 1-up win.

"Probably the loudest roar I've ever heard," Johnson said. "In that situation, probably one of the best putts I've ever made."

The Americans had a 5-3 lead to start the day, and it was critical for the Europeans to make inroads. Instead, they saw more American red on the scoreboards and heard endless cheers erupt from all corners of Medinah.

Leading the way was Bradley, the rock star of this Ryder Cup who was so fired up that he came out to the first tee well before his match to ask for noise. In alternate shot, the most difficult format, Bradley and Mickelson had six birdies in 10 holes, and their 7-and-6 win tied the Ryder Cup record last matched in 1991.

Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker atoned for a Friday loss by beating McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in 18 holes, and the Americans took an 8-4 lead to the afternoon. All the momentum was on their side. The crowd felt it, and so did the players from both teams.

"It was hard ? very hard ? to ignore the red on the board," McDowell said. "It's hard to ignore the noise that's been made around the golf course. There's blood in the water. They're up for it."

That's what made those last two matches so critical.

Woods did not play Saturday morning, the first time he's ever been at the Ryder Cup in uniform without a tee time, and he didn't contribute much in falling so far behind. But he turned it around on the back nine, pointing to the cup when a birdie putt fell, screaming orders at his tee shot as the ball was in the air, looking like he was on the verge of a big comeback. Donald and Garcia, who had yet to win a point, made sure that didn't happen.

"That was big," Donald said. "Having these matches turn our way has really given the European side a lift that we needed. It's given us a heartbeat for tomorrow."

Poulter and McIlroy came up big in so many ways. The Americans had won every match at Medinah when leading on the back nine until the final match. McIlroy made his sliding birdie putt from 15 feet on the 13th hole, and Poulter did the rest.

"Poults gets that look in his eye ? especially the week of the Ryder Cup ? and it's really impressive," McIlroy said.

The Europeans now hope to repeat the American comeback in 1999. The Americans had Ben Crenshaw, wagging his finger and saying, "I'm a big believer in fate." The Europeans have Olazabal, a proud Spaniard and teammate of the late Seve Ballesteros. This is the first Ryder Cup since his death from a brain tumor in May 2011, and the Europeans will dress in navy blue, the color Ballesteros favored on Sunday. Their uniforms will bear his iconic silhouette.

"It's always possible," Paul Lawrie said. "Until it's impossible to do it, then you fight on, certainly for Jos? Mar?a this week. No one is going to be giving up."

Add Bluetooth Sound to a Boombox [Video]

Add Bluetooth Sound to a Boombox These days most of the audio we want to hear is on our mobile devices. If you have an older boombox with a few parts and some time you can create Bluetooth connectivity as long as the boombox is designed for use with an infrared remote control.

Electronics enthusiast site PC486 shared how they reverse engineered the infrared remote signals for a Panasonic SC-AK33 boombox and put together an ATtiny25 microcontroller with an infrared LED diode and programmed it so that commands streamed from the author's phone via Bluetooth would be received by a Logitech Bluetooth wireless speaker adapter and resent via Infrared. This means that no modifications to the original boombox were necessary.

For full details on the project as well as photos and the code for the repeater visit the source link below.

ZTE shows off new V98 Windows 8 slate, we go hands-on

ZTE shows off its first Windows 8 slate, we go handson

Intel just outed its new Atom SoC, and at its tablet event in San Francisco today, the company had a whole slew of slates packing the Clover Trail silicon on hand. Dell's Latitude 10, the ASUS Tablet 810, Acer's Iconia W510 and W700, Lenovo's ThinkPad 2, the HP Envy x2 and Samsung's Series 5 were all there. However, it was the handsome slice of Windows 8 from ZTE that really caught our attention. Called the V98, it has a 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 LCD on top of an aluminum chassis with a beveled edge similar to what you'd find on a white iPhone 5. Beneath that handsome exterior is the aforementioned Intel Z2760 chipset, 64GB of ROM, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (plus a microSD slot if you need more digital space). There's 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, tri-band UMTS and quad-band GSM radios, plus NFC and LTE can be had as options. It's got an accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors, a magnetometer and a gyro, too. An 8-megapixel camera is stuck in the back, while a 2-megapixel shooter resides round front. ZTE managed to stuff all that and a 7,000mAh battery inside a svelte 8.9mm-thin package.

We got to spend a little bit of time with a prototype ZTE model, and found the hardware to be solid for a hand-built unit. Its aluminum chassis makes for quite a rigid device in hand, and the machined and polished bevel gives the V98 a very high-end look. The chromed plastic volume rocker, power button and screen orientation lock switch nestled in the plastic radio reception strip at the top of the device are decidedly less luxurious, however -- the travel of each was shallow, and the finish on the plastic appeared a bit cheap to our eyes. That said, the rotating magnetic aluminum door that reveals the SD card and SIM slots is slick -- far easier to open and close than the plastic port covers found on most other slates. There's also a 30-pin docking port on the bottom edge of the tablet, but ZTE informed us it'd be another month or so before the dock is ready for public consumption. Unfortunately, the V98 won't be available for purchase until Q1 of next year, but you can see if its worth waiting for in our gallery of shots below.

Greek party chiefs inch forward on austerity cuts

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek political leaders are still haggling over the details of 12 billion euros worth of budget cuts needed to release further tranches of its international bailout, government officials said on Thursday.

Officials, declining to be named, had told Reuters on Wednesday that the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his finance minister had agreed the list of measures to be put to coalition party leaders and the European Union and IMF.

"There is a basic agreement (between party leaders), we're moving forward to the final negotiations," Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras told reporters after a meeting of the three leaders in Samaras' conservative-led government.

One of the three leaders, Fotis Kouvelis warned that sticking points remained.

"There was agreement on the basic framework. There are outstanding issues," said Kouvelis, head of the moderate Democratic Left party.

Neither Stournaras nor Kouvelis specified what issues the party chiefs had made progress on and whether the deal on a "basic framework" went beyond a similar broad agreement they said they had notched up a month ago.

The coalition has been haggling for weeks over the package demanded by international lenders keeping the country afloat, with Samaras's allies sharply opposed to across-the-board cuts in wages and pensions as well as plans to fire civil servants.

Pressure is growing on the party chiefs to strike a deal of some sort before the troika of European Commission, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund return to Athens early next week.

The troika's blessing of the package is a pre-requisite for Greece to secure its next round of bailout cash, without which the country faces certain bankruptcy and a potentially disastrous euro zone exit.

Kouvelis and Samaras's other ally, Socialist chief Evangelos Venizelos, are under rising pressure from their voter base to fight the austerity package, which includes a new round of wage, pension and welfare benefit cuts.

On Wednesday, nearly 70,000 Greeks marched to parliament chanting "We won't submit to the troika (of lenders)" and "EU, IMF Out!" as part of a general strike against the cuts.

Celebrating Ten Years of LISAvienna - the ... - Business Review USA

VIENNA, September 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Ten years of successful progress: Life Sciences in Vienna

On 13.9.2012, a mild early autumnal day, over 350 anniversary guests gathered at the Rinderhalle, Neu Marx to celebrate the success of the organisation over the past ten years.

Deputy Mayor Renate Brauner attended the event as a well-wisher and highlighted the special importance of life sciences in Vienna with facts and figures, outlining the progress made over the past few years with the involvement of LISAvienna. "Life sciences have made a huge leap forward in recent years. Vienna seized this opportunity - not only to gain recognition as a prime life science location among international competitors, but also to achieve great success. A pivotal element of this success has been the huge commitment shown by the LISAvienna team," said the Deputy Mayor in her celebratory speech.

During her opening speech, Ulrike Unterer, of the Federal Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth, reminded the audience that the origins of LISAvienna can be traced back to the incentive program "Impulsprogramm Biotechnologie" initiated by the Ministry of Economics and Innovationsagentur in 1998.

LISAvienna's founder and Rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Sonja Hammerschmid, highlighted the success factors in her celebratory speech: "A decisive factor is the support package tailored to the requirements of entrepreneurs, with short decision-making processes and no bureaucratic hurdles. Only in this way can the region develop in a sustainable and internationally competitive way. Particularly during times of economic uncertainty, policies need to be even more prepared to take an acylic approach to absorb the repercussions of market failures."

Life science entrepreneur Joachim Seipelt praised the good total package offered by the Vienna support agencies and the excellent networking between the Life Science companies based in Vienna.

As a representative of the global player Baxter, Harmut?Ehrlich, Vice President of Global R & D and Medical Affairs BioScience, discussed the advantages of Vienna as a research location for international pharmaceutical companies and expressed clear requests to the political decision-makers: "Increased investments are required into research funding and the education of highly qualified workers to secure the Vienna region for the future".

LISAvienna Managing Director Peter Halwachs revealed the secret of the life science location of Vienna. "In addition to the infrastructure created by the federal government and City of Vienna and the coordinated funding and services provided by ZIT, Wirtschaftsagentur, aws and FFG, Vienna is particularly characterised by its combination of excellent research establishments, innovative small and medium-sized businesses and major international companies." Co-Managing Director Johannes Sarx discussed the significance of LISAvienna: "Over the past 10 years, we have held over 600 personal consultation meetings and have been able to welcome over 5,000 people at training and network events. The most important event next year is BIO-Europe, the world's largest biotechnology partnering exhibition which, at the instigation of LISAvienna, will take place in Vienna for the second time at the centre of the global science community."

The climax and simultaneous end of the program was a visual look back over the evolutionary history of the life science centre of Vienna, created by the "Verein zur F?rderung der Kunst von Visualisten, mediaOpera".

LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt (120GB SSD)

If you need the fastest rugged portable storage, the LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt ($199.99 list) is the external drive you want. This solid-state drive (SSD) is made for a Mac, but is strong enough for a PC, especially now that Thunderbolt is available on Windows laptops. Solid-state drives are a little pricey on a GB-per-dollar basis, but the LaCie drive totally makes up for it in speed and flexibility, earning it our Editors' Choice nod for rugged, portable drives. If you are a speed demon with a Thunderbolt-equipped Mac or PC, this drive should be in your commute bag.

Design and Features
The Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt is similar in size and design to the LaCie Rugged Mini (500GB) ($114.99 list, 3.5 stars) we looked at last year, down to the pocket-sized metal and plastic enclosure wrapped in a protective orange rubber bumper. Put side by side, you'd need to look at the interface ports or the label to tell them apart. The last Rugged Mini sported a spinning 500GB hard drive, while the Thunderbolt drive contains a 120GB SSD. This puts it in the same class as the Editor's Choice ioSafe Rugged Portable SSD (120GB) ($499 list, 4.5 stars)].

LaCie rates the drive to survive a four-foot drop, but since this is a SSD with no moving parts, we're sure it will survive an even higher drop. With no moving parts, the drive will work fine even in a high vibration/movement environment, like in the back of an off-road vehicle ambling down a steep, rock strewn dirt road. Unlike a spinning drive, I wouldn't worry about using the LaCie drive actively while in that truck. With a spinning drive, you're going to worry about every pothole and rut causing the drive head to skip and damage your data. The drive comes with both a USB 3.0 cable and a Thunderbolt cable, which will save you the $49 purchase price of the Apple-branded Thunderbolt cable. Both cables are in the 1.5- to 2-foot range, much shorter than the six-foot long Apple cable. The length is more convenient for the commuter or business traveler who is carting around a laptop like a MacBook Air.

The Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt drive has no other accessories, but the drive doesn't really need any extras. The drive is ready for Time Machine backup right after a quick setup session. The drive first brings up a small partition when you plug it into your Mac, which prompts you to run a LaCie setup program. The setup program will format the drive, with one or two partitions for Mac and PC compatible formatting. You're prompted to size the partition, anywhere from fully Mac, to 50/50 Mac and PC, to fully PC compatible. The first partition (called "LaCie") is formatted HFS+ for efficient use on any Mac running OS X. The second partition (Called "LaCie Share") is formatted FAT32, and can be used by both PCs and Macs. The setup program keeps a copy of itself on the LaCie Share drive, just in case you want to repartition the drive in the future. A 50/50 split is the most flexible, but that of course means that your drive is effectively separated into two 60GB volumes. If you have no need for PC file transfer, then I suggest making the drive a 120GB HFS+ volume for the Mac.

The LaCie Setup program will prompt you to install a few optional utilities, including Intego Backup Assistant (a basic timed backup program), LaCie Private Public (a 256-bit AES encryption program), the drive documentation (in PDF format) and a Wuala cloud storage. All LaCie hard drives come with 10GB of Wuala cloud storage for a year. After the year is up or anytime during that year, you can upgrade cloud storage depending on how much storage you need. For example, 100GB is going for $11.99 per month these days.

Performance
The Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt is one of the fastest single mechanism drives we've tested. It was able to return a 4,344 point score on the PCMark7 HDD test, which outpaces the 3,946 point score that the ioSafe SSD got late last year. Both drives were tested using USB 3.0 on our Windows 7 PC testbed. Both are much faster than the 1,449 point score we got on our current EC for spinning hard drives, the Seagate Backup Plus ($139.99 list, 4.5 stars).

Mac testing reinforced the LaCie's speed edge over rivals. The drive took only 17 seconds to finish our 1.2GB drag-and-drop test on Thunderbolt and an equally quick 20 seconds on USB 3.0. Contrast this with the Western Digital My Passport Studio (1TB) ($179.99 list, 4 stars), which took 19 seconds using the FireWire800 interface and 40 seconds with USB 2.0 (The My Passport Studio we tested doesn't support USB 3.0).

Where the LaCie drive really shines is throughput. It returned an insane 432 MB/sec read and 191.5 MB/sec write throughput via USB 3.0 on our AJA system test, which tests the drives' throughput on video operations. The LaCie returned similar numbers on the Thunderbolt interface (379 MB/sec read, 200 MB/sec write), showing that the SSD is the speed demon in the equation. These numbers are close to LaCie's Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (240GB SSD) ($899.99 list, 4 stars) (476 MB/sec read, 252 MB/sec write), our previous recommendation for a transportable, SSD-based Thunderbolt drive.

The closest pocket-sized rival to the LaCie Rugged is the Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt Portable HDD (HD-PA1.0TU3) ($229.99 list, 4 stars), which uses a 1TB spinning hard drive. As a result, the Buffalo MiniStation is quite a bit slower on read and write operations (110 MBps read, 96 MBps write). That's three times faster than the WD My Passport under USB 2.0, but still slower than the SSD-equipped drives.

So here's the dilemma: What portable drive is best for you? The LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt is a speedy drive that is both more portable and a lot less expensive than the Thunderbolt drives that came out earlier this year, like the LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt and the Promise Pegasus R6 ($1,999 list, 3.5 stars). The LaCie Rugged fully takes advantage of the speedier USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt interfaces as well. The Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt beats the LaCie Rugged on the dollar per GB basis, but not the speed. The LaCie Rugged goes for $1.667 per GB, which is passable for a speedy SSD. Contrast this with the Buffalo Thunderbolt Drive, which shows the spinning hard drive's economy of scale at $0.239 per GB. As they say, you'll always pay to get things done quicker. The closest competitor in functionality, capacity, and price is the former Editor's Choice for rugged portable hard drives, the ioSafeRugged Portable SSD. Both the ioSafe and the LaCie have a 120GB capacity, and both are ruggedized. The ioSafe is undoubtedly still the choice for the user that will need to use the drive in an extreme environment like on a safari in the Congo or an Arctic expedition to the Yukon. However, for regular 9-to-5 commuters that aren't gentle with their equipment, the LaCie is a much more affordable, and is faster too. Thanks to those factors, we crown the LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt as our new Editors' Choice for rugged portable hard drives.

American cancels hundreds of flights: Are pilots to blame?

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

Thousands of American Airlines (AAMRQ) passengers received bad news last week. The airliner cancelled hundreds of scheduled flights ? many at a moment's notice.

American said its planes were grounded because of aircraft maintenance concerns and a high number of pilots calling out sick. According to American, pilots' "sick leave usage has been running higher than historical norms" and maintenance write-ups "have covered items such as torn seat pockets, frayed seat belts and malfunctioning coffee machines and passenger reading lights."

American Spokesman Bruce Hicks told The Wall Street Journal that management has "seen unprecedented pilot maintenance write-ups, many at the time of scheduled departure, which is having an impact on our operations" in the past two weeks.

AMR Corp., the parent company of American and the regional American Eagle division, cut more than 300 departures or a little more than 1 percent of its scheduled flights between Sept. 18 and Sept. 23. The Allied Pilots Association (APA), the union that represents American's 10,000 pilots, rejected claims that there was a concerted effort by the pilots to disrupt air travel by planning a sickout.

Related: Chicago Teacher Strike Ends, But Failing Schools Remain: Pedro Noguera

"American Airlines pilots are trained professionals who are responsible for flying their passengers safely around the world every day," said APA President Keith Wilson said in a press release. "The list of unresolved maintenance issues grows every day on each of the aging aircraft we operate, and we can't ignore serious maintenance issues that could easily turn into safety risks. Our pilots will not compromise safety, ever. Understandably, our pilots are taking a prudent and cautious approach in their operational decision-making process."

The fraught relationship between American Airlines and its pilots intensified last November when the nation's No. 3 carrier entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. American ended its contract with the pilots union after a U.S. bankruptcy judge ruled earlier this month that the company could seek new employment terms.

American's push to reduce its labor costs and minimize its overall financial obligations has amplified as the company attempts to emerge from bankruptcy protection at the end of this year. American's cost-cutting plans could include slashing nearly 11,000 workers. The pilots union has yet to reach a new agreement with American management unlike the other unions in the airline industry.

American also said it was reducing its flight schedule by 2 percent in October, a move that underscores the tension between American executives and pilots. Barbara Peterson, senior aviation correspondent at Conde Nast Traveler, says she suspects the pilots are orchestrating the flight delays and cancellations.

"Something is going on," she says in an interview with The Daily Ticker. "Pilots have been the most vociferous about their unhappiness with the airline and the company. They feel like they've had to give up a lot in recent years. Pilots are doing this to hurt the company so the company will come back to the bargaining table."

Peterson does not believe American will leave bankruptcy protection until it reaches an agreement with the pilots. The relationship between the two parties has become so strained, the pilots union has even publicly expressed their support for a merger with US Airways, an unusual alliance says Peterson.

"Unions usually do not support mergers," she notes. But the pilots "think they'll get a better deal" if two airlines joined forces.

Related: Thank You, Millions Of Anonymous Chinese Workers Making $2 An Hour, We Love Our iPhone 5s!

Consumers may want to avoid booking flights with American in the near term but that idea could backfire, Peterson says. American desperately needs the business and the number of available flights has fallen as all airlines cut capacity, making it difficult to avoid American completely. She has not seen a big outcry from American passengers over the past few days but that could quickly change if American's problems persist. Customer complaints about air travel in July totaled 2,466 -- double the number from July 2011, according to Peterson.

American Airlines posted these travel advisories to passengers stranded at its terminals for more than two hours:

  • Receive a full refund if you decide not to travel
  • Reaccommodate on another carrier if available
  • Change your American flight plans at no charge

Tell us what you think! Are you going to book your next flight on American?

Texas district's new policy allows educators of either gender to paddle male, female students

SPRINGTOWN, Texas - Like many schools in Texas, "spare the rod and spoil the child" might be considered the motto at Springtown High School.

But when two teenage girls there reportedly suffered bruises after being paddled by male assistant principals, some parents complained. They weren't upset about the punishment itself, but instead that the school violated the policy requiring an educator of the same sex as the student to dole out the paddling.

So the school district has changed its policy ? to expand, not abolish, corporal punishment. Board members voted Monday night to let administrators paddle students of the opposite sex, after Superintendent Michael Kelley cited a lack of women administrators to carry out spankings.

The new policy says a same-gender school official must witness the paddling, which is just one "swat," and that parents also can request one spanking per semester. In all cases, a parent must give written permission and request it in lieu of another punishment, such as suspension or detention.

"I personally think Texas is getting a black eye because of this," Kelley told The Associated Press. "People are assuming a school district can do whatever it wants because of this. That's not the case."

Texas law allows schools to use corporal punishment unless a parent or guardian prohibits it in writing. The issue of the student or educator's gender is not addressed, and there are no state standards on the minimum or maximum ages of students who can be spanked, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Cathi Watt, whose daughter was one of the two girls recently paddled, said Tuesday that she's OK with paddlings in schools "because they need it once in a while, and I got them when I was a kid." But she said the male administrator used too much force, so she does not support the new policy.

Watt said her 16-year-old daughter, Jada, deserved to be spanked after she spoke sarcastically to a teacher and an assistant principal, "but she did not deserve to be bruised."

"And what kind of message does it send these boys?" Watt said. "Is it telling them that it's OK to hit a girl?"

Texas is one of 19 states allowing schools to spank students, but 97 of the nation's 100 largest school districts have banned corporal punishment, according to the Center for Effective Discipline.

About 75 per cent of the state's school districts use corporal punishment, including Springtown, a town of about 2,700 located about 30 miles northwest of Fort Worth, according to People Opposed to Paddling Students, a group based in Houston. Some of the major districts, including Fort Worth, don't paddle students.

"It is never OK to hit a child. ... Men should not be padding teenage girls, because there is a sexual connotation with teen girls but also with teen boys," said Jimmy Dunne, president of People Opposed to Paddling Students.

State Rep. Alma Allen, D-Houston, thinks schools should never spank children, but her bill to abolish corporal punishment in Texas schools never passed. She said the compromised version of her bill, which did become law, was that parents could opt in.

"Parents can choose whether to spank their children at home," Allen said. "When you send a child to school, it should be a place to be motivated ? not a place to be beaten."

India?s spin bowling future in safe hands, believes Anil Kumble ? Cricket News Update

Impressed by the recent progress of Ravichandran Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian captain, Anil Kumble, believes that the country?s spin bowling future is in safe hands.

Spin bowling has always been India?s forte, who have historically troubled foreign teams on low and turning home tracks. Over the years, the Men in Blue have produced a number of quality spinners like Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Ashwin and Ojha have been absolutely brilliant in the last two home series against West Indies and New Zealand, taking the responsibility on their shoulders, since Harbhajan was miserably out of form.

However, Harbhajan has looked impressive on his comeback during the on-going ICC World T20 2012 in Sri Lanka.

Kumble is impressed by Ashwin and Ojha, the two young spinners, and urged the selectors to persist with them in future.

"You'll never know the real calibre of a spinner if you don't give him enough opportunities. Right now the spin cupboard is pretty healthy because there are two spinners (Ashwin and Ojha) who are performing on the field," Kumble said.

Kumble himself is considered to be one the game?s greatest spin bowlers, with more than 950 international scalps. The lanky leg-spinner was extremely effective because of the extra bounce he was able to generate off the tracks.

The former captain believes that Harbhajan?s experience can also prove to be vital in future and said that the off-spinner can still serve the country for some more years.

Talking about the bench strength, Kumble expressed that Amit Mishra, Rahul Sharma and Piyush Chawla are talented cricketers and can do well at the international level, if given consistent opportunities.

"There's Harbhajan who has the experience of picking 400 Test wickets and who's a highly fierce competitor and exceptionally skilled. When he comes back to being his best, you'll have three quality spinners in the side plus the three leg-spinners waiting in the wings," he added.

India?s next assignment after the World T20 is the Test series against England at home, where the spinners are expected to play a huge role.

Internet Marketing Videos ? Market Your Business With a Change

The reach of the internet has improved in the recent past drastically. Everyone?s life is connected to the internet these days. This is the reason why internet marketing has gained tremendous importance now. As the internet evolved, the internet marketing strategies evolved too. The latest trend in online marketing world is the use of internet marketing videos.

Most of the popular search engines have the tendency to rate videos higher than the other information available on internet. Most of the new internet marketers are making use of internet marketing videos to market their products and services. Many marketers will not attempt making videos as they think that it requires a lot of money. They think that producing and uploading a internet marketing video is a tough thing to do. This increases the chance of being successful as there is no much competition in this scenario. The realization of this fact has resulted in the tremendous growth of many online marketers.

The production cost will go haywire only when you are outsourcing the work of making a video to a company specializing in online marketing videos. You also have the option of doing it yourself. You must understand that the ability of the video to convey the message is important than the money spend on it. The ability of these videos to advertise a business in different ways is the most important factor that draws many online entrepreneurs into online video marketing.

Online video marketing is far better than the articles and other written forms of marketing as people do not have the patience to read many pages for just finding what they are reading about. The internet marketing videos will help the viewer in understanding the concept in no time. These videos will convey the message in a more interesting way.

This can also help the entrepreneurs in improving the image of their business. They will have a long lasting impact on the viewers. Internet users have the history of supporting the people who have bravely undertaken a challenge. Therefore, internet marketing videos can be the best way to market your business online.

Cloud Atlas to Open in IMAX

Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tywker?s Cloud Atlas premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Reactions are all over the board, with some hailing the film as revolutionary American cinema, while others assert that it folds under the weight of its own ambition. However, most everyone seems to be in agreement on one issue: that Cloud Atlas is worth checking out.

That?s not exactly surprising, given that the first Cloud Atlas screenshots and six-minute trailer ? teasing the cast?s?race-bending performances through a series of interweaving stories ? have been generating discussion around the blogosphere for the past two months. Mainstream audiences should start showing interest?as well, now that an official trailer and television spot (see above) have been unveiled.

Warner Bros. is distributing Cloud Atlas ? which was funded independently, after the studio balked at the cost ? and has struck a deal with IMAX Corporation to re-master the film for an IMAX release beginning next month. Here is an excerpt from the official press release, which includes a synopsis:

?Trailblazing filmmakers Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis understand how to transport moviegoers through ground-breaking imagery and scale,? said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. ?We?re excited to build on our partnerships with Warner Bros. and the filmmakers and present this epic tale in IMAX.?

The IMAX release of Cloud Atlas will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX?s customized theater geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Drama, mystery, action and enduring love thread through a story that unfolds in multiple lifetimes as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

The Cloud Atlas cast includes such people as Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, Xun Zhou, James D?Arcy and Keith David. It marks the first film directed by the Wachowski siblings since Speed Racer in 2008, as well as the rare Tykwer production to be given a wide release in the U.S. (with the exception of The International).

Cloud Atlas opens in regular and IMAX theaters on October 26th, 2012.

How To Leverage Other Resources for Online Business Promotion ...

These days just about the best concept grasped by temporal humans is leverage. The best use of leverage has helped people throughout all of history to reach triumphs that they may not have otherwise been able to reach. The great thing about leverage is that there are infinite (or at least it seems that way) methods of using it to your own advantage. You can guess that we are getting to using leverage in business and marketing. Work on building a habit about looking at the business universe in terms of the best ways to both apply and use leverage.

One of the challenges depends on the nature of the service you offer. Lots of service providers offer a one-time deal and it is done once the service has been performed. So it creates a need for you to have an effective method for generating a lot of leads already set up.

Making videos is a great method of promoting your business. But you first have to find niches that are reasonably related or close to what you are doing. Once you make your videos, you will tag them using keywords from the other niches. Your video title needs to be composed using the same method. So basically what you?re doing here is quickly and effectively expanding the potential of your videos? reaches. You can also look for videos with large numbers of views and then use similar titles for the videos that you have created; this is a great way to milk the search volume at YouTube. You don?t have to worry about this seeming underhanded or dishonest because your work will relate closely to the work of the others. Remember to leverage on a good ecommerce software to list those videos and improve your traffic conversions if you intend to run an ecommerce store.

Testing your marketing and advertising is one of the best ways to find real success online. Unfortunately most marketers and big businesses don?t actually do this (because they have no clue as to how). For this, you are going to be a split testing expert which means you need to learn quite a lot about copywriting. The entire idea behind split testing is to raise your conversion rate. So what you do, then, is offer a consulting service for raising conversion rates and then show businesses exactly how to make that happen for themselves. It?s not hard to pair this sort of consulting with other sorts of consulting (like site usability).

You know how hot video has been, and there is no foreseeable decrease in that trend. The simplest way to build a business here is to put together your own one stop shopping website that holds everything that people will need for better video composition and creation. So this entails things like graphics, images, special effects, editing, etc. You, then, get to choose the angle that best puts you in a position to help others create videos that will be hot and actually have an impact. You can use this kind of business model to reach out to lots of different types of businesses. When you think about it, this is a great way to build an even bigger business and sell products you create yourself alongside other products that you are selling as an affiliate. If you look closely it?s easy to see that most Internet marketers do pretty much the same things as everyone else. Of course, they?re usually encouraged to avoid reinventing the wheel. This is all fine and good but the truth is that sometimes you need to make your own way. Don?t hold back from trying something new or doing experiments now and then, even when they seem weird.

Heard of video commission formula? This course will teach you how to rank videos on Youtube if you are interested.
