Lithuanian teen sets record in swim worlds prelims

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? A year after her breakout performance at the Olympics, Ruta Meilutyte is even faster than before.

The 16-year-old Lithuanian set a meet record in morning heats of the 100-meter breaststroke at the world championships Monday with a quicker swim than the ones that got her gold in London.

Meilutyte hit the wall in 1 minute, 4.52 seconds, Jessica Hardy of the United States was second in 1:05.18 and Yuliya Efimova of Russia touched third in 1:05.24.

At the Olympics, Meilutyte won in 1:05.47, although she swam faster in the semifinals at 1:05.21.

Meanwhile in other prelims, American teenager Missy Franklin got her first individual event off to a strong start by leading the 100 backstroke in 59.13 seconds.

Defending champion Lotte Friis qualified first in the marathon-like 1,500 in 15:49.18, just ahead of American favorite and 16-year-old Katie Ledecky, who was 0.08 behind.

In a low-key 200 free without Olympic silver medalists Sun Yang and Park Taei-hwan, Robert Renwick of Britain qualified first in 1:46.88, Olympic champion Yannick Agnel of France advanced in sixth and defending champion Ryan Lochte reached the semifinals in ninth.

Also, Ashley Delaney of Australia led the men's 100 back in 53.60.

Four finals were scheduled for the evening session on Day 2 in the pool: the men's 100 breast, the women's 100 butterfly, the men's 50 fly and the women's 200 individual medley.

There could also be some more fireworks from Meilutyte.

If the Britain-based Lithuanian swims just 0.08 quicker in the semifinals later or in Tuesday's final, she'll break Hardy's world record of 1:04.45 set in 2009 at the height of the rubberized suit era.

However, Meilutyte doesn't have two-time defending champion Rebecca Soni to push her, as the American is taking the year off.

But Hardy appears in form.

"I blew my expectations out of the water already, so it's going to be fun," Hardy said. "That was just getting the first-race jitters out."

Franklin got her jitters out by leading off when the Americans won the 4x100 free relay Sunday. That was first up in her Michael Phelps-like load of eight events.

"It was a perfect way to start off the meet," Franklin said. "But I'm really excited to get some backstroke in. So 100 back is the perfect event to come off the relay from."

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary qualified second behind Franklin in 59.40 and Elizabeth Pelton of the U.S. was third in 59.94.

"Awesome. I'm good with that, 59.1 is definitely better than I wanted to be this morning," Franklin said.

Hosszu plans to scratch from this event to focus on racing China's Ye Shiwen in the 200 IM final.

Franklin won the 100 back in 58.33 at the London Games.

Can she approach the world record of 58.12 set by Britain's Gemma Spofforth in 2009?

"I haven't even thought about it," Franklin said. "I'm just going to go out there and swim and have fun. When you focus too much on a number you kind of lose what swimming is all about. So I'm just going to go out there and see what I can do."

Ledecky, however, is clearly eyeing Kate Ziegler's world record of 15:42.54 in the 1,500 ? a non-Olympic event.

"I definitely have a lot left in the tank," Ledecky said. "I just wanted to win my heat and swim a controlled race."

Ledecky won the 400 free in a dominating performance Sunday.

"I just carried the energy and excitement from last night into this morning and recovered well," she said.

Flow restrictors may reduce young children's accidental ingestion of liquid medications

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Over 500,000 calls are made to poison control centers each year after accidental ingestion of medications by young children, and the number of emergency department visits for unsupervised medication ingestions is rising. In a new study, researchers studied whether adding flow restrictors to bottles can limit the amount of liquid medication a child could access even if child-resistant caps are missing or improperly closed.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ? Florida's 825 miles of beaches are coming to a computer near you.

Two-person Visit Florida teams were trained by?Google?Map experts to capture the images. The teams will walk about 50 miles of beach each week with a backpack that has a camera system on top. ?She asked, basically, ?If you had the opportunity to do this again, would you? Because it?s scary. It?s life changing,?? Jennifer, who had her own doubts about signing on to play Katniss Everdeen in ?The Hunger Games? movies, shared. ?And I said, ?Yes. As many things change, as many things are horrible and scary, it?s worth it if you love the movie,? which she did.?

Ex-NFL player Larry Johnson sentenced in Las Vegas

Former NFL running back Larry Johnson pleaded no contest Tuesday to charges that he choked an ex-girlfriend into unconsciousness and left her only in her underwear in a Las Vegas hotel hallway.

The 33-year-old was convicted of domestic violence battery and assault, which are both misdemeanors. A felony charge was dropped as part of a plea deal, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported (http://bit.ly/17B9Nzd ).

Johnson was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay a $345 fine. He must also perform 48 hours of community service and attend six months of counseling.

"I'm just happy to have this behind me and go back to Florida and stay out of trouble for once," Johnson said after the hearing, according to the newspaper.

Johnson was arrested Oct. 5 at a Bellagio hotel room. According to a police report, he and the woman had been drinking alcohol before the altercation, and the woman had marks on her face and bruises on her neck. Johnson had marks on his face that police attributed to the woman fighting him as he choked her.

The woman told officers she passed out and awoke in the 10th floor hallway and knocked on doors until someone called hotel security.

Johnson, who starred for the Kansas City Chiefs but most recently played for the Miami Dolphins in 2011, was arrested several times during his nine-year NFL career.

He was sentenced in March 2009 to two years of probation with a chance to have his record cleared for good behavior after pleading guilty to reduced disturbing the peace charges in separate cases involving two women at two Kansas City nightclubs.

In 2003, Johnson was charged with aggravated assault and misdemeanor battery after being accused of brandishing a gun during an argument with a former girlfriend. The charges were dropped after he completed a domestic violence diversion program.

Massasoit Community College?s fledgling Middleboro campus a success story for college and town

Swing open the doors to the Middleboro campus of Massasoit Community College and there is a good chance you?ll be greeted by Director John Morosco, bearing coffee and snacks.

That personal approach combined with small classes is proving to be a winning strategy for the campus that opened in September 2010.

The new fall semester begins in September. But already there?s an 87 percent increase in the total credit hours students are enrolled for compared to this time last year.

?That school has touched my heart,? said Nicole Kenneally, 22 of Carver. ?It?s a small campus and has a home-like feeling.? Kenneally had been attending a larger college on the North Shore, but said she felt like she was just a number there.

At Massasoit?s downtown Middleboro campus, the student-to-teacher ratio is roughly 15 to 20 students to one professor. Kenneally said with such small classes, students get to know each other, often getting. She added they will often get together for study groups and then hang out.

?The faculty is phenomenal, and the teachers they hire care about students as a person and what you are going to do,? Kenneally said.

The liberal arts major wants to be a social worker. She made dean?s list in the spring and will head back to classes in the fall.

That 87 percent hike in credit hours for fall classes could be due to more new students enrolling or students taking more credit hours.

According to director Morosco, the reason for the campus? success is two-fold.

First, ?the science labs are now open and that?s just been a boon for us. It rounds out what people can take,? Morosco explained.

The personal touch is also a drawing card.

?When we start classes, I try to have snacks and coffee out for everyone,? Morosco said. ?I also greet everyone coming in and talk with them and get to know who they are.?

Liz Franzosa, 26, of Middleboro graduated from Massasoit?s Middleboro campus in May.

For Franzosa, it was a bit of homecoming. The college is housed in a former elementary school that Franzosa attended.

?It was very comforting walking into the school,? Franzosa said. She majored in criminal justice and earned her associate?s degree.

In September, Franzosa will start at Bridgewater State as a junior.

?In the criminal justice program, they had retired and current police officers teaching our classes and they really knew what they were talking about,? Franzosa said.

For Allin Frawley, a Middleboro resident, parent and selectman, Massasoit is a win-win.

?It brings people downtown, it boosts the local economy and it gives kids a chance to take classes without leaving town.?

Professor Irene Duke teaches ASL, an American sign language class at Massasoit?s Middleboro campus, has the small-town location to her students? benefit.

?We go on what I call walkabouts downtown,? said Duke.

There she and her students practice deaf immersion in the neighboring coffee shops, stores and restaurants.

?It?s something we can?t do on the Brockton campus,? she said.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1 review

Samsung has no idea what size Android device you want but, by golly, it?s going to find out. Throughout its massive Galaxy lineup, Samsung has hedged its bets on almost every possible device size in an attempt to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

Each great Samsung device has at least one feature that justifies its existence beyond a decimal difference in screen size. The Note 10.1 has a great stylus, the Galaxy S4 has a laundry list of software tweaks. But Samsung seems to have taken a different approach with its line of Tabs: shoot for the middle and be as nondescript as possible.

On paper, it?s not that the 8-inch or 10.1-inch Galaxy Tabs are particularly bad ? they?re just not particularly good. Samsung isn?t trying something new or sticking it to the competition, which seems counterintuitive in a market full of beautiful displays, big batteries, and lengthy lists of features

So this generation of Galaxy Tabs must have something going for them, right? Or are they doomed to join the Galaxy Prevail and Galaxy Ace in the scrapheap of forgotten Samsung devices? That?s exactly what we were determined to figure out. David Pierce and I split the two devices, and started looking.

A year after movie shooting, Colo. seeks healing

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Some recited the names of the dead. Some did good deeds for their neighbors. Some practiced yoga, walked through nature, or simply talked. And two got married.

Coloradans embraced ways to heal Saturday as they marked the anniversary of the Aurora movie theater massacre with a city-sponsored "Day of Remembrance."

It was one year ago that a gunman opened fire into a packed midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." The rampage lasted less than two minutes but left deep wounds that still ache in Aurora, Colorado's third-largest city which spreads out across the rolling plains on Denver's eastern side.

Twelve people died, including a 6-year-old girl. Seventy were hurt, some of them paralyzed. Countless others inside the theater and out bear the invisible wounds of emotional trauma.

Parents, siblings and survivors of those slain attended a morning ceremony of prayer, song and remembrance outside Aurora's city hall.

Several hundred people ? including police, fire personnel and members of Colorado's congressional delegation ? bowed their heads as the names of dead were read. A small bell tolled after each. The Hinkley High School choir sang "Amazing Grace."

"One year ago, the peace of our community was shattered," Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said. "We are still seeking justice."

"It is important for us to remember that one senseless act does not, cannot and will not define us as a community," Hogan added. "This is a story of resilience, not just of Aurora but of humankind."

Gov. John Hickenlooper told the crowd that many people still struggle with unanswered questions.

"I know I do," Hickenlooper said.

Dr. Camilla Sasson, an emergency room physician at the University of Colorado, struggled through tears as she recounted the efforts of police and medical personnel to save lives.

"It is absolutely a miracle that 58 people survived that night," she said.

Mourners clutched white roses and, as the ceremony ended, laid them beneath a large wreath bearing the inscription, "In memory of those lost and those whose lives were forever changed."

After the ceremony, residents volunteered for projects ? tending a community garden, sorting food bank donations, donating blood. Spiritual and mental health counselors were available, along with art therapy projects and poetry readings.

Eugene Han and Kirstin Davis, both injured in the Aurora shooting, marked the anniversary Saturday afternoon by getting married ? a union that turned July 20 into a celebration. Friends who also survived the shooting took part in the ceremony at Village East Baptist Church in Aurora as senior pastor Robert McClendon gave a prayer for the couple and for those still grieving.

"This time is both happy and sacred," McLendon said.

Several hundred yards from City Hall, people visited 12 crosses erected near the cinema where the attack took place. James Holmes, accused of the shooting, was arrested outside the theater in the aftermath of the rampage.

Holmes has been charged with murder, attempted murder and a list other offenses. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Democratic state Rep. Rhonda Fields, whose district includes the theater, said she is still numb and in mourning.

"It hasn't fully mended after a year," she said.

Fields said she wasn't surprised by that. Her son, Javad Marshall-Fields, and his fiancee were shot to death in 2005 to keep Marshall-Fields from testifying in a murder trial.

"I'm all too familiar to losing someone to gun violence," Fields said.

On Friday and Saturday, Fields and other volunteers read the names of more than 2,500 people killed in gun-related violence in the U.S. since the Newtown, Conn., massacre in December. The last volunteer to read names was Stephen Barton, who was wounded last year in the theater shooting.

Immediately after Barton was finished, about 40 volunteers held a moment of silence at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, the time the theater shooting began. The silence lasted 82 seconds to represent the 12 people killed and the 70 wounded.

The ceremony at Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora was sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, not the city of Aurora. A gun rights group, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, contended the event wrongly politicized a tragedy to promote gun control, so it staged a counter-rally nearby.

Hoping to capitalize on the anniversary, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Action Fund began running a TV ad Saturday in eight cities featuring Barton. In it, Barton describes his confusion during the attack and says he wondered afterward, "Why it had to happen to us at all? And who'll be next?" The spot is running in Denver, Washington, D.C., and six cities in states represented by U.S. senators who in April voted against a failed bill to expand background checks for gun purchases: Las Vegas; Manchester, N.H.; Phoenix; Missoula and Billings, Mont.; and Little Rock, Ark.

After Saturday's Aurora ceremony, some residents had their photo taken with police Chief Dan Oates, whose department won praise for its response a year ago.

"It was a searing event for the police department as well as the whole community," Oates said. But he insisted many officers have recovered from the trauma and want to move on.

"I think we're at that point," Oates said.

Texas Lawmakers Now Hope To Ban Pregnancy Terminations After Approximately 6 Weeks

    sb5 texas abortion bill

    Women protesting SB5.

After coming into the office this morning, I read headlines about three Texas lawmakers with a plan and my heart began to drop. Despite their state already passing one of the most restrictive bills in America regarding abortion, despite the incredibly strong fight against it by thousands of women, these three politicians have a plan to make abortion virtually illegal and, at the very?least, incredibly invasive. How? By banning abortion after the fetus has a heartbeat. When does that happen? At around six weeks.

According to ThinkProgress, ?Reps.?Phil King?(R),?Dan Flynn?(R), and?Geanie Morrison?(R)??filed HB 59?on the same day that Perry signed [SB5].? The bill, which is so severe that it?s divisive even in the anti-choice realm, would criminalize any abortions after the fetus has a heartbeat. This also means that any woman seeking an abortion would need to have an invasive ultrasound ? or a transvaginal probe, in all likelihood. North Dakota already has this law in place; will Texas be next? And if so, who will come after?

Women and men, we can?t ignore this. We can?t let everyone else ignore this. We can?t dismiss it as being something that?s happening ?elsewhere,? because elsewhere is still America, and we are Americans. If this passes, there will be 13,350,000 women who will not be able to obtain abortions after six weeks. We have the responsibility to protect our mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, friends and selves from having their bodies regulated by the government. I realize it sounds like I?m on some sort of soapbox, but?wow, who imagined that in 2013 we would get to the point where ?should women be able to terminate pregnancy from rape?? is even a debated question?

Don?t say ?fuck Texas? and give up; support Texas? women in the same way you would hope they would support you if your rights were the ones under attack.?Don?t pretend this doesn?t exist; that?s what makes these types of bills go through almost unnoticed. It does exist, and it?s not going away unless we all collectively push against it.

From the mail bag: Activating device administrator for an app

    Device admin

Apps that can alter the default security policy can be powerful and handy, but you need to know why they are doing it before you say OK.

    Carolyn writes,

I purchased the Unlock with WiFi app that Jerry recommended a few weeks ago. I haven't fully installed it to use yet because it asked to "activate device administrator". I wanted to be sure that was OK? What risks does it create to allow this type of access to my phone?

    Thanks!

What an excellent question! Security on any smartphone is pretty darn important, and the simple fact is that most of the time when it gets compromised, it's because of something we did. I don't mean something crazy like installing cracked apps from a website you had to use Google Translate to read, though that's always a good way to compromise everything. I'm talking about changing device settings or just not using some functions because we don't fully understand them. The Device Administration API is a great example.

Originally baked into Android with version 2.2, the Device Admin API allows you to alter the remote or local security policy of your Android. We'll use my Unlock with Wifi app as a walkthrough of what that means after the break.

Have a question you need answered? (Preferably about Android, but we're flexible.) Hit up our Contact Page to get in touch!

Badgers football: Appleton native Chris Gill takes 'crazy path' to Madison

Having grown up in Appleton as a huge fan of the University of Wisconsin football team, Chris Gill is keenly aware of the story behind Mark Tauscher?s senior year with the Badgers.

In fact, Tauscher is a family friend of Gill and his four older brothers.

Tauscher was set to transfer to Youngstown State in Ohio for his final year of eligibility, wanting to become a teacher.

Jim Hueber, who was the UW offensive line coach at the time, didn?t even know Tauscher had a year of eligibility remaining before running into him at the Kentucky Derby and convincing him to finish his career with the Badgers.

Tauscher became the starting right tackle during the 1999 Rose Bowl season before going on to a successful NFL career as a starter with the Green Bay Packers.

Now, along comes Gill, who spent the past four seasons at Mississippi, including a redshirt year in 2009, prior to graduating.

After a casual conversation between one of Gill?s brothers and a member of the UW athletic communication department, Gill has transferred to UW, where he will be a walk-on center and eligible to play his final year in 2013.

He was accepted into a masters program for Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis on Tuesday and joined his new teammates for summer workouts on Thursday.

?It?s been kind of a crazy path to get here, but I?m so thankful I?ve got this opportunity,? Gill said ?Friday.

The 23-year-old Gill, 6-foot-4, 295 pounds, appeared in two games at Ole Miss, both coming last season. ?

The Badgers have an alarming lack of depth on the offensive line and Gill is capable of playing center, guard or tackle. He will start out at center behind redshirt freshman Dan Voltz, the projected starter.

?Wherever they need me, I?m more than happy to play,? Gill said.

Nobody is expecting Gill to become another Tauscher, but the stories have much in common.

?(Tauscher) is an unbelievable guy and an unbelievable player,? Gill said. ?I would never want to parallel myself to someone of his caliber. I really do hope the season is a lot of fun and I?m sure we?ll do great as a team.?

Gill?s path to UW started with a conversation between Ben, an older brother, and Patrick Herb, the main media contact for UW men?s basketball. Herb grew up in Appleton and was a roommate in college with Ben.

Chris planned to go to law school in Florida?.

?I was already enrolled and about to go, but I?ve been missing football a whole lot,? Chris said.

Greg Sr. and Cathie Gill have five boys ? and the first four all earned varsity letters at UW.

In order from the oldest: Greg Jr. was an All-American decathlete; Patrick was a linebacker who played for Barry Alvarez and earned a letter during the 1998 Rose Bowl season; Ben was All-Big Ten honorable mention in the decathlon; and Barry was a middle distance runner who earned All-Big Ten honorable mention as part of a relay.

Chris desperately wanted to play for the Badgers, but was undersized at 240 pounds after graduating from Appleton Xavier and didn?t get an offer.

?It was a little disappointing,? Chris said. ?I would have loved to play for the home state, it?s always been a dream.?

Among his offers were Colorado State, as well as the Naval and Air Force academies, but he elected to go to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., for three months to increase his exposure.

The Southeastern Conference recruits that school heavily and Chris signed with Ole Miss, where his dad went to law school.

?He really liked playing for Houston Nutt,? Greg Sr. said. ?We?ve got nothing but great things to say about him.?

Chris played under offensive line coach Mike Markuson for three seasons. Markuson was hired as UW?s offensive line coach last season but fired after the second game. Two torn meniscus cartilage injuries stalled Chris? development early in his career, though he was healthy last season.

Nutt was fired after the 2011 season and replaced by Hugh Freeze, who decided to go with younger players on the line. If that had not happened, Chris probably would have played his final year at Ole Miss, his dad said.

Herb contacted UW cornerbacks coach Ben Strickland, who recruits in the state, after the conversation with Ben. Given UW?s need at the position, it seemed like a perfect marriage between Chris and the Badgers.

?I told him, ?You can go to law school any time you want, you can?t (play football) again,? ? Greg Sr. said. ?They?re glad to have an experienced, mature young man. Chris is a great student. Houston Nutt kind of summed it up when he said he was the most coachable kid he ever had. I think (UW coaches) are looking for some maturity, dependability, someone who?s not going to get rattled.?

?Nobody knows if this story will end as well as Tauscher?s did, but given the Gill family?s ties to UW, it?s already a good tale. The entire family is already making plans to attend as many games as possible.

?It?s a lot less expensive to drive to Madison to have beers and brats than fly to Oxford (Miss.) and get a condo for the week and drink wine and (eat) cheese,? Greg Sr. said.

5 Myths About Teaching Learners With Special Educational Needs ...

Group of friends in a circle from belowMarie Delaney is a teacher, trainer, educational psychotherapist and author of??Teaching the Unteachable? (Worth). She has worked extensively with pupils with Special Educational Needs and trains teachers in this area.

Do you have learners with special educational needs (SENs) in your class? Have you had any training for teaching these learners? Probably not.

In many countries across the world governments are promoting a policy of inclusion for learners with SENs. However, there is often a gap in training and resources for teachers to implement this. This has led many teachers to feel anxious and insecure about their teaching skills. There are some common fears and misconceptions which make a lot of teachers anxious.

5 myths that make teachers anxious

    1. You have to be a specially trained teacher to teach learners with SENs
Not true. Good teaching strategies will benefit all learners. Good classroom management and a positive attitude are things every teacher can have.
    2. It takes a lot of time and extra planning
It doesn?t have to. If you already plan your lessons with a variety of activities and use a mult-sensory approach, you do not need to do lots of extra planning.
    3. You can?t do fun, challenging activities
Not true. See beyond the label. Learners with SENs are individuals with their own personalities and strengths. Discover your learners? strengths and build on these in your classroom activities.
    4. Other learners suffer because of having learners with SENs in their classes
Not true. Other learners benefit from developing understanding and acceptance of differences.
    5. Parents of learners with SENs are challenging for teachers
This does not need to be the case. These parents have often had to struggle to get help for their children. They can help you to understand the issues and develop strategies together which work. See them as allies, not critics.

    So what works?

You already have lots of classroom management skills which will help learners with SENs. Like all learners, they need clarity, consistency, understanding and a multi-sensory approach to learning. In the case of learners with SENs, these things are absolutely vital.

    8 top tips

    1. Instructions
Make these clear, concise, give them on a step-by-step basis. Check by giving an example and getting an example. Give in different senses ? for example, have visual cues such as an ear for listening and gestures to reinforce. Avoid the use of sequencers, such as ?before you do this,? and give the instructions in the correct order.
    2. Use positive classroom language
Say what you want learners to do, not what you don?t want them to do. For example say ?Look at the board? rather than ?Don?t keep turning around?.
    3. Use visuals to reinforce rules and routines
For example, have a traffic light system to show when the whole group is going off task. Use visual cues to let learners know the order of activities in the lesson.
    4. Think about your learners needs and have a seating plan
For example, hearing impaired learners will need to sit near the teacher, learners with ADHD need to sit away from distractions such as windows and radiators.
    5. Learn from your students
Ask them what helps. Get to know their strengths and interests.
    6. Use a multi-sensory approach
For example, have learners step out the word stress, draw the word stress, sing the word stress. Get feedback in different ways, for example, use individual mini whiteboards where learners hold up their answers
    7. Create a positive environment where learners help each other
For example, have a buddy system where learners sometimes help those with SENs. Use activities which develop empathy such as guessing about people in the room.
    8. Work with parents and other professionals
Focus on what works, not the problems. Do more of what works.

Above all, see your learners as people and not as labels. And enjoy learning with them.
