Panetta: Sanctions not moving Iran away from nukes

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta acknowledged Monday that increasingly stiff international sanctions have yet to compel Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions. But he argued that more pressure eventually would lead Iran to "do what's right."

Iran's disputed nuclear program, which Tehran contends is only for peaceful purposes, is a prominent backdrop to Panetta's five-day tour of the Middle East and North Africa. On Wednesday he'll be in Israel, whose leaders have said they are contemplating a military attack on Iran to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a step they view as a threat to Israel's very existence.

The Obama administration wants Israel to give sanctions and diplomacy more time to steer Iran off its nuclear course, although Panetta repeated the administration's standard line that "all options" are on the table in the event that non-military pressure does not work.

"These sanctions are having a serious impact in terms of the economy in Iran," he told reporters during a visit to the North Africa American Military Cemetery, where 2,841 U.S. servicemen killed in the North Africa campaign against Nazi Germany in 1942-1943 are buried.

"And while the results of that may not be obvious at the moment, the fact is that they have expressed a willingness to negotiate (with the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China) and they continue to seem interested in trying to find a diplomatic solution," he said.

Those on-again, off-again negotiations have not come close to resolving a problem that U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has cast as one of the biggest failures of the Obama administration. Romney was in Israel this week showing support for Israel and asserting that if he were president Iran would never get the atomic bomb.

Panetta, who has declined to comment on Romney's visit to Israel, stuck to his argument that the administration's current approach is the right one.

"What we all need to do is to continue the pressure on Iran, economically and diplomatically ... to negotiate and to ultimately do what's right in joining the international family," he added.

After meeting in Tunis with the country's new Islamist leaders, Panetta was headed to Egypt for talks with its new Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, in Cairo, as well as Egyptian military leader Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi.

In his remarks at the U.S. military cemetery, Panetta said Washington plans to promote closer counterterrorism cooperation with Tunisia's new leaders. Panetta's press secretary, George Little, said the Pentagon chief also raised the idea of more U.S. assistance in securing Tunisia's border with Libya and in Tunisian maritime security. Little said specifics were not discussed.

Little said the U.S. is worried about the spread of al-Qaida's influence in North Africa, while adding that "the sense is that the threat here (in Tunisia) is not as great as elsewhere" in the region.

Tunisia was the launching pad for the wave of revolt that swept through the Arab world in 2011. It had one of the most repressive governments in the region. The uprising began in December 2010 when a fruit vendor, Mohammed Bouazizi, set himself on fire in the town of Sidi Bouzid to protest his lack of economic opportunity and the disrespect of the police.

The transition here from dictatorship to democracy has been smoother than in neighboring countries like Libya and Egypt, with no power-hungry military or armed militias to stifle the progress. But there is an increasingly bold ultraconservative Muslim minority who want to turn Tunisia into a strict Islamic state.

Movies Made Of Olympic Gold

"SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue"

By Leah Rozen

Hollywood has long carried an Olympic torch for the Games and their charismatic champions

Before he wore a loincloth as Tarzan and yodeled while swinging across movie screens on a vine, Johnny Weissmuller was an Olympic swimming champ.

The strapping Weissmuller -- 6-foot-5, 190 pounds -- power-splashed his way to five gold medals in the 1924 and ?28 Olympic Games. Recognizing a marketable hunk when it saw one, Hollywood snapped him up.

"It was like stealing," Weissmuller (1904-1984) once said of his Tarzan career, which included a dozen films between 1932 and ?48. "There was swimming in it, and I didn't have much to say. How can a guy climb trees, say ?Me Tarzan, you Jane,? and make a million?"

I was a sucker for Weismuller?s Tarzan films -- as a kid, I used to watch the scratchy prints that repeatedly aired on Saturday afternoon TV.

In fact, I?m a sucker for any film with even the dimmest connection to the Olympics. Each one offers the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, to borrow a phrase popularized by ABC?s "Wide World of Sports". And there are plenty of movies to choose from.

Hollywood has long considered both the Summer and Winter Olympics as a prime hunting ground for both plots and stars. You can bet that, along with the rest of us, show business insiders will be closely watching the 2012 Games, which kick off July 27 in London.

Olympic movies (not including documentaries) fall into three categories: retellings of actual Olympic stories; fictional dramas that appropriate the Olympics as a setting; and showcases for Olympic competitors deemed pulchritudinous enough to be worthy of a shot at a screen career. Here?s a quick look at each category:

Based on a True Story

Easily the single most memorable movie in this genre is the Oscar-winning "Chariots of Fire" (1981). The British period drama tells the true tale of runners Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams -- a devout Christian and a Jew -- who competed in the 1924 Olympics in Paris. To this day, just hearing the first few notes of Vangelis? synthesizer-heavy score brings goose bumps. (The movie was adapted as a stage play last spring: "Fire" is currently packing a theater on London?s West End.)

Other worthy films that recreate real stories of Olympic glory are "Miracle" (2004), about the gold-winning 1980 U.S. hockey squad; "Prefontaine" (1997) and "Without Limits" (1998), two bio pics about American runner Steve Prefontaine, who was edged out for a medal in the 1972 games; and "Jim Thorpe: All-American" (1951), starring a brawny Burt Lancaster as the Native American who won both the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 games -- only to have his medals yanked when it was ruled that an earlier payday for playing semi-pro baseball meant Thorpe didn't qualify as an amateur athlete. (Director Steven Spielberg used the hostage-taking and killing of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Olympics in Munich as the starting point for his movie "Munich", which mostly focuses on the subsequent covert efforts by Israeli agents to retaliate against those who had planned and carried out the operation.)

Olympic Inspiration

Movies that use the Olympics merely as a backdrop for fictional stories are a more varied lot. A few are keepers, notably "Million Dollar Legs" (1932) starring W.C. Fields, a wacky comedy about a made-up country competing in the Olympics in Los Angeles.

Qualifying as guilty pleasures are "The Cutting Edge" (1992), a romantic drama about a couple (D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly) who fall in love when paired as a figure-skating team; "Running" (1979), a drama about a marathoner (Michael Douglas) hoping to win back his wife by finishing the race; and "Cool Runnings" (1993), an amusing comedy very loosely based on the first entry of a Jamaican team in the bobsled competition at the 1988 Winter Games.

From Champion to Movie Star

This is my favorite slot. These athlete-turned-actor films were especially popular in the 1930s and ?40s, long before the dawn of blanket TV coverage of the Olympics. In addition to Weissmuller, Hollywood glorified Sonja Henie, who thrice won gold for Norway as a figure skater in the 1928, ?32 and ?36 Games before gliding through 11 fluffy films.

Others on the list include:

Buster Crabbe The Olympic swimmer won a bronze medal in '28 and gold four years later. He made a single Tarzan movie, but is best remembered as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers in old-time Saturday matinee serials.

Esther Williams Her shot at Olympic glory was cut short when the 1940 Summer Games were canceled because of the outbreak of World War II. But she went on to star in numerous aquatic screen extravaganzas of the 1940s and ?50s. (For those who always wanted to give synchronized swimming a try, we tell you how to get started here.)

Bob Mathias The two-time decathalon champion (1948 and '52) later served as a U.S. Congressman. He also played himself in "The Bob Mathias Story" (1954).

In recent decades, several Olympic athletes have tried for Hollywood gold, with scant success. Gymnast Mitchell Gaylord took the leap with "American Anthem" (1986), a gymnastics-themed turkey. Bruce Jenner, now best known as the Kardashian sisters? put-upon stepfather, appeared in the disco disaster "Can?t Stop the Music" (1980) as well as various TV movies and shows. And diver Greg Louganis had a short run as a TV actor. (Read more about them here.) Never did Brad Pitt or Harrison Ford have reason to worry.

Somewhere in here there?s an excellent doctoral thesis. What does the cross-pollination between the Olympics and Hollywood really mean? How are athletes and movie stars alike? How do they differ?

I?ll leave all that for someone else to pursue. I?ll be too busy watching the Games and trying to spot the next potential Johnny Weissmuller.

SPIN METER: Obama's 'You didn't build that' echoes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney says Barack Obama doesn't think entrepreneurs built their businesses. The problem is that's not what the president said.

The brouhaha over Obama's comments on businesses shows no sign of fading. Romney continues to hammer Obama over comments taken wildly out of context and Romney's allies are pummeling the president as a government-obsessed figure who thinks Washington is to credit for small-business success. The president's team, recognizing the potency of the issue, is pushing back hard against Romney's claims in the hope they haven't yet taken hold as fact.

"This is an ideology which says, 'Hey, we're all the same here, we ought to take from all and give to one another and that achievement, individual initiative and risk-taking and success are not to be rewarded as they have in the past,'" Romney said Monday on CNBC, continuing his line of attack that, if it were true, would give voters pause. "It's a very strange and in some respects foreign to the American experience type of philosophy."

That was not Obama's point when he spoke in Virginia on July 13 about the government's supportive role in providing a stable environment in which businesses can thrive. Nor was it Romney's point when he used similar phrasing in 2002 about Olympic athletes who benefited from supportive parents and coaches.

But in a campaign that makes facts secondary to a good attack, the context doesn't seem to matter.

"Look, if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own. You didn't get there on your own," Obama said. "I'm always struck by people who think, 'Well, it must be because I was just so smart.' There are a lot of smart people out there. 'It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.' Let me tell you something: There are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help."

Obama cited teachers and mentors who helped "create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges."

Then, Obama teed up the line that left Republicans giddy. "If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet," Obama said, returning to his thesis.

"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

Romney and his allies pounced on the "you didn't build that" portion and ignored the rest.

"I cannot believe the president of the United States could say that I have not made this," one small-business owner says in a web video released Tuesday by American Crossroads, an independent group supporting Romney's campaign.

"When President Obama said in Roanoke that 'if you've got a business you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen,' I was personally extremely insulted," office supplier Melissa Ball of Richmond, Va., said on a Republican Party conference call with reporters.

Recognizing the potency of this theme, the Obama campaign began pushing back harder. The campaign announced it would roll out an ad with the president speaking into the camera and addressing the hullabaloo.

"It was important to us to ensure that people know where the president is coming from ... how much he supports small-business owners and entrepreneurs," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters traveling with Obama on the West Coast.

During a raucous, 1,000-person campaign fundraiser a day earlier in Oakland, Calif., Obama said Romney was "knowingly twisting my words around."

"I understand these are the games that get played in political campaigns," Obama said. "Although when folks just omit entire sentences of what you said, they start kind of splicing and dicing, you may have gone a little over the edge there."

The Obama campaign also released web videos Monday and Tuesday rebutting Romney's assertions.

In one, the campaign accused the presumptive GOP nominee of having "deliberately altered the meaning of the president's words." A second video out Tuesday featured deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter, who said Romney was "not telling the truth about what the president said."

Taken as a whole, Obama's remarks aren't that different from Romney's comments in 2002 to Olympic athletes.

"You Olympians, however, know you didn't get here solely on your own power," Romney said after congratulating the athletes. "For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them."

Romney's team didn't seem to mind the risk. The backdrop for his campaign stop Monday in California: a blue banner that said, "We Did Build It!"

Why the rich getting richer and the poor get ... - Financial Success

Why rich getting richer and poor get poorer

The rich get richer and poor getting poorer other stay poor

In America or in almost all of the countries, there is a wide gap between the rich and the poor people.? The common observation from many economists is that the ?the rich getting richer and the poor get poorer.? In my previous article I discussed in detail the reasons why the rich getting richer.? And now in this article I will elaborate the causes why the poor getting poorer or why poor people stay poor.

?Majority of poor people are educated and have a decent job. They are trying to climb the corporate ladder and competing among other employees for a certain position and salary.? Poor people favorite words in this world is security and comfortable.? They feel secure of having a job but still keep worrying about money.? Poor get poorer mainly because they don?t tend to risk looking for and taking other sources of income.

?Poor people tend to acquire lots of liabilities and bad debt.? While the poor people stay poor, they still feel better when they buy more wants; like branded clothes, latest and expensive electronic gadgets, etc.? Wages from their job is their main source of income.? They love to have a consistent and fixed income coming to their account monthly.? They don?t bother to trade their precious time to their employer for dollar or money.

Over the period of time, the scenario is still the same, that the poor getting poorer and in most cases in our society, the poor keep struggling to save for retirement or for emergency fund.? They are happy to have just enough money or to have just enough to pay the bill.? To clearly understand why the rich getting richer and the poor get poorer, you read the below.?

?

1.??? Working hard and earning less

Poor people concentrate to work hard and to look for a second job in order to cope up with their household expenses.? You may notice that if you are an ordinary employee, your income is always less. ?The price of grocery items, foods and other necessities are significantly going up while the salary of middle class and ordinary poor wager is still fixed.? Poor get poorer because they don?t have time to think or to conceptualize how to escape from rat race. ?They don?t have time to look for any other opportunities of money making vehicles or to ask any advice from registered financial advisor or financial mentor.? They love to work hard, work and work yet their income is not enough to pay their bill or loan.

However, if you could observe, rich people work less but they earn much money throughout their life.? Rich getting richer due to leveraging, they love to delegate all the works to their people while they are busy looking for other ventures or business opportunities.

?

2.??? Spending Habits

Poor get poorer due to their spending habits. ?They spend majority of their income on luxurious things before setting aside for savings.? After buying and paying bills, nothing left for saving and investing.? Most of the poor people stay poor because they spend most of the time above their income by using their credit card to purchase expensive stuffs.? These expensive stuffs will make them satisfied and happy for a few minutes or days and after that they?ll sacrifice to pay off over a long period of time.?

On the other hand rich get richer for the reason that they have a self control to save and invest their money. ?After accumulating money and building wealth they can now afford to spend luxury items or nice car for themselves, to go for vacation holidays, etc.

?

3.??? Lack of Financial Education

Poor get poorer because of lack of financial education.? Poor people are always busy working for money and they don?t have time to learn how to invest to financial education.? They don?t spend their spare time to educate themselves on how to read financial and income statements.? If they have spare time and money, financial education is not their priority.? Additionally, poor people stay poor, because they are focusing on being an employee only and they don?t want to learn about money saving, wise investing, financial and frugal tips, real estate investing, business venture and etc.

While millionaires are focused on mastering money markets, stock trading, real estate investment and business trends.? They are open minded people, willing to learn and adapt new technology for the advancement of their mind and their business.

?

4.??? Investing Money in one asset

Poor people biggest investment in life is their home. ?Poor get poorer for the reason that they tend to acquire home mortgage for a big and nice house because they believe that their house is an asset.? In recent global crisis the most affected business sector is real estate and the most affected in the society are those poor that are mainly tied up of their savings or retirement on their home mortgage. ?Moreover the poor people stay poor, due to the collapse of real estate; it means that they owed more than the real present value of their houses.

Whereas those wealthy people, they diversified their investments into different money making vehicles and markets.? They invest their money wisely and keep learning the ups and downs of the markets and that?s why the rich getting richer.

The rich getting richer and poor get poorer

The rich getting richer and the poor get poorer

?

?5.??? Hanging out with like minded friends

Friend of the same feather flocks together.?? Most of the poor people hang out with friends with lavish lifestyles who buy big houses, new and expensive cars, latest appliances, electronics gadgets and eat out at fancy restaurants.? Hanging out with these kind of people will lead you to a lot of unnecessary desires and impulse buying due to peer pressure. Thus, this will contribute to the fact that poor get poorer due to peer pressure. ??

?However rich and successful people avoid dealing with toxic and broke individual.? Rich get richer because they like to hang out with like minded people where they can gain great business ideas and advices about market trends.? They get assistance and advice among fellow wealthy individual.

??Rich people think and focus on opportunities while poor people focus on obstacles?.

?Conclusion

In recent economy and in our society, the real story here is that there is little hope for an already struggling poor people.? It takes a lot of financial education, self control and discipline to gain towards financial advancement. ?Furthermore, if you will invest most of your time and money for the gain of your financial literacy, you can escape the rat race and can avoid the poor get poorer scenario.

?

Personal recommendation

My personal advice to those financially struggling out there, go and learn how to read financial statement, how to invest and learn the cash flow pattern.? Read a lot of reading materials related to personal finance and money investing.? By these, you can render your action based on the knowledge you gained from your self learning process about money and financial being.

?
