Our 2011 ? 2012 Homeschool Curriculum

With our third year of homeschooling under our belts, and some new found confidence in what we are doing, I?ve been busy planning what we?ll be doing during our fourth year of home educating.?? During the 2011 ? 2012 school year, the kids will be in the following grades: 6th, 5th, and 1st. (Special needs note: Our 6th grader has Asperger?s Syndrome, so while he is at grade level in some things and has shown great improvement in the last year or so, he is still below grade level in some areas.)

Math:

Teaching Textbooks -?Math 5 and Math 6

Horizons ? Level 1

Language Arts:

Spelling: A Reason for Spelling (finish books from this school year, then everyone will move on to next level)

Handwriting: Handwriting Without Tears (older kids), D?Nealian Handwriting 1 (1st grader)

Grammar (for the boys): Language of God

Phonics (for Molly): Explode the Code (start at Book 2 and then just do as many books as we get through)

Vocabulary: Wordly Wise 3000, Book 5

Writing (Mechanics of Writing): Institute for Excellence in Writing Teaching Writing/Student Writing Intensive Combo Pack Level A

Various Writing Activities from the Following Books: Rip the Page!: Adventures in Creative Writing, Games for Writing,

Reading:

Silent Reading Each Day

Hooked on Phonics ? Set of Kindergarten ? 2nd Grade (I got the overstock version, though they appear to be out of it now) for Molly

Chapter Books for the boys

Poetry Study: Emily Dickenson and Carl Sandburg (one semester for each)

Aesop?s Fables for Children

Lots of Social Studies Books (novels and picture books)

Science:

Noeo Biology I and Chemistry I (We?ll supplement for the older kids, if needed.? But, overall, I just want them to enjoy it and really get it.? Sometimes, the Biology II from last year was just a bit above them.? We?ll do Biology I first, and then once we finish, we?ll move to Chemistry I.)

Social Studies:

Connecting with History ? Book 1 (Old Testament/Ancient History) (Books we will be using with this program ? beginner level & grammar level)

Map Skills from Continental Press

Religion:

Faith and Life series

Religion Books from within our Social Studies program

Weekly Religious Education Classes

Music:

Piano Lessons for All Three Kids

Making Music, Praying Twice Homeschool Curriculum (with Molly)

Art:

Artistic Pursuits

Artist Studies (use one artist per semester; first semester ? Renoir)

Super Doodle Books (not exactly the same, but a very similar book that is by the same author is Do You Doodle?)

Foreign Language:

Hooked on French (by Hooked on Phonics for Molly)

An as of yet undecided French program for Jack

French flash cards and computer games

First Thousand Words in French

An as of yet undecided Latin program for Noah

Other Stuff:

We will have a variety of other things going on as well, such as our homeschool co-op where the kids will each take three classes per semester, 4-H, field trips, dance class, and whatever else may pop up.
