CORVALLIS, Ore. --?Broccoli looks just as unique as it tastes. Now, veggie lovers may have one more reason to take a bite out of broccoli: the same chemical that makes broccoli taste so bitter may also help fight and prevent cancer.
Oregon State University associate professor Emily Ho started researching the effects of broccoli on cancer in 2003. She said broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphone. Her research shows sulforaphone slows down the growth of prostate cancer cells.
"What's exciting about this new study that came out is that it doesn't have any effects on normal cells, which is really what you want in something that's trying to combat cancer," Ho said.
It's exciting news - but not surprising for Ho.
"I suspected it all along," she said.
Researchers aren't sure yet how much broccoli you'd have to gobble to take down a tumor.
"Just having one broccoli stir-fry might not be enough either," Ho said. "It's something that you really have to do on a regular basis to really show some benefits. It's something that you do have to incorporate long-term in term of a lifestyle change."
Ho said the next step is to try their research on human cancer patients in hopes of one day making broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables part of treatment to?combat cancer.
