CLEARFIELD ? The last time Tyrena Dilley saw the flooring in her home, it looked like a puzzle of carpet, hardwood and linoleum.
But when she walked through the front door on Friday afternoon, Tyrena was amazed at what she saw.
?It?s one big beautiful piece of flooring,? she said.
Dilley and her husband, Air Force Staff Sgt. Kevin Dilley, are the winners of the Home Depot Gift of Good contest. They were one of nine military families from across the nation in the running to receive $20,000 worth of home repairs and renovations.
?Eight months ago, we asked nine bloggers to nominate a military family they felt was worthy of The Gift of Good contest, and here in Utah that blogger was Stacy Risenmay,? said Devin McClellan, district services manager of Home Depot.
The Dilleys were selected as the grand prize winners.
?We came over to the home and took a look at what was needed and decided we could double our goal. So we reached out to our vendors and service providers and asked them for help. Everyone jumped in. They all wanted to be on board, and before we knew it, this gift card had turned into almost $60,000.?
Friday afternoon, the store presented the finished home to the Dilley family. As the family drove their van into the driveway, they were greeted by Home Depot employees, volunteers, Risenmay, orange balloons and an orange ribbon tied across the front porch.
After cutting the ribbon, the Dilleys and their five children walked into the newly renovated home, which includes a new roof, flooring, fresh paint, kitchen cabinets and countertops, appliances, a furnace, insulation, and fence and landscaping for the yard.
The family could be heard uttering the words, ?Wow, cool, awesome, beautiful,? as they walked through each room.
Two of the Dilley children have spina bifida ? a congenital condition in which a portion of the spinal cord protrudes through a gap in the backbone ? and are in wheelchairs. The added space and hardwood flooring will allow the children to move around more freely, Tyrena said.
?It used to be a tight fit and they would bump their wheelchairs into the corner,? she said. ?This is perfect now. The home is gorgeous. Everyone did such a great job. It?s just overwhelming.?
Dilley recently returned from a one-year deployment in Greenland. He has also served in Iraq twice and Afghanistan once. He said the renovated home is a relief.
?It?s great to know that my family has been taken care of while I?ve been gone,? he said. ?Life marches on while you?re away, and sometimes it?s not easy to get things done. I just want to tell everyone thank you and God bless you.?
