LONDON ? Britain has announced the winner of a competition to design a new shape for the country's power pylons.
The government hopes to beautify the ubiquitous but unsightly metal structures that carry electricity across the country.
The winning design is a simple T-shaped structure created by Danish firm Bystrup. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne called it "simple, classical and practical."
It is also much shorter than the existing 165 foot (50 meter) latticed steel towers, whose design has been unchanged since the 1920s.
The contest was run by the government's energy department, power supplier the National Grid and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
National Grid said Friday it would work to turn the design into reality.
