The first thing that you should do is be sure that the individual is comfortable when he or she lies down. They have to be laying down on a surface that is both firm and soft. There?s no need for a fancy massage table table but you can have them lie down on a bed. If they are on the floor, spread some soft blankets, towels or a mat so that the person will feel comfortable.

If the person prefers to keep his or her shirt on, make sure that it is of a soft material so there will be less friction and scraping.

Start with the basic rub. Gradually, and using the entire flat side of both of your hands, rub up from the lower back and toward the neck. This rub should have at least a bit of pressure in it but don?t use your full massage pressure yet. Start out at the base of the person?s back and then slide your hands up the back then across the shoulders and then back down the back. As you work on this part of the massage, try making each ?loop? of the back smaller so that you can be sure to get to all areas of the back.

Using the heels of your hands provides you a great way to offer great and pointed pressure. Using the heels of your palms to put on pressure, start working in small circles at the base of the back on either side of the spine and then work those small circles out toward the person?s sides, up a little bit and then back across to the spine and upward until you have massaged the whole back.

Sit at the side of the individual who is receiving the massage. Next, put one hand on top of the other and drive into the back using only your fingers. Start with the spine and dig in steadily away from the spine, across your back and then very lightly rub your hands back toward the spine. Do this again as you massage up the back and then do the same thing on the person?s other side.

Work the spine. Start at the base of the spine and work up each of the sausage-y muscles on each side of the spine with your fingers or your thumbs. Rub each little node at least five times to generate some friction before moving on to the next. Massage one side of the spine and then the next.

One of the things to remember as you work through these massage techniques is that it is good to re-relax your person between each portion of the massage you?re giving. This means that after you have used the heels of your hands for specific applied pressure, you must go back to the rub you used at the beginning for a few minutes.
