AUTOMOTIVE - AUTOS: LA Auto Show Takes Off

The vast and appealing Los Angeles Auto Show opened to the public today with plenty of new cars and trucks to lust over and some intriguing concepts to consider.

The LA show has gained quite a bit of luster now that it no longer competes head-on with the Detroit show in January, instead fitting in this year between the important Frankfurt, Germany, show and the major Asian assemblage in Tokyo.

The three major domestic brands each have their own hot muscle cars to show off: the highly anticipated Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 convertible, the 650-horsepower Ford Mustang GT500 and the SRT reinventions of the Dodge Charger Super Bee and Challenger Yellow Jacket.

Ford is also showing the long-awaited performance version of Focus, the five-door ST that packs 250 horsepower from it 2-liter EcoBoost four.

Chrysler?s new SRT brand made its first auto-show appearance after being spun off from its former roll as a performance label for Chrysler, Dodge and Ram. Although Porsche has already shown its new 911 Carrera and Carrera S in Frankfort and at the recent Rennsport Reunion, there was still plenty of excitement when the cover was pulled back from the latest version of Porsche?s iconic sport coupe in LA.

Along with the 911, Porsche also unveiled the high-performance version of its luxury sedan, the Panamera GTS, as well as making a major announcement: Porsche will build a second U.S. facility for brand enthusiasts in Los Angeles that will include a specialized test track, handling course, driving instruction and other elements of the Porsche Experience program.

Over at Cadillac, the luxury brand?s new direction for its big sedans was unveiled with the 2013 XTS production model.
