Naples braces for flooding after heavy rains (AP)

ROME ? Security officials in Naples have canceled a soccer match and closed the ancient ruins at Pompeii because of fears of flooding in the southern Italian city following torrential rain.

The evening match between Napoli and Juventus Sunday was expected to draw 50,000 fans. Authorities also Pompeii is being closed for the day as a precaution.

News reports say a tree falling on a car during the rain storm killed a man near Pozzuoli, a Naples suburb. Civil Protection agency officials urged Naples residents to avoid basements and stay on higher floors.

Flash flooding in Genoa Friday killed six people. Elsewhere in northwestern Italy, the tourist towns of Cinque Terre are clearing away tons of mud from earlier flooding that claimed nine lives in Liguria and Tuscany.
