Save Mart, union workers reach tentative contract

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Save Mart Supermarkets and its union workers have reached a tentative deal on a new contract.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union says the agreement will give the Modesto-based grocery chain "temporary labor cost reductions" to help the company confront its financial challenges.

The Sacramento Bee reports the tentative contract was announced late Tuesday night after a marathon bargaining session overseen by a federal mediator.

Union officials say details won't be available until the agreement is released to union members for ratification, which should happen within days.

UFCW leaderd say the contract meets the union's goals of securing more funding for its health benefits and providing more full-time job opportunities.

Save Mart had been pushing for concessions on health care and other issues to lower labor costs.
