The biggest elephant in the room during Weber?s tenure at Illinois is that he rode the coattails of Illini predecessor Bill Self and his stud recruits (namely Dee Brown and Deron Williams) to his most successful years.

That theory gained momentum in the seasons after Williams and Brown left as Weber failed to find success with his own recruits. Considering the school?s natural (one would think) in to the bevy of great players in Chicago, it was rather inexcusable on Weber?s part. Thus Weber was fired last season after a woeful 17-15 year.

Yet somehow Kansas State is confident that Weber can lure recruits to the Little Apple. Confident enough that they?re already paying Weber more than they paid former coach Frank Martin ($1.3MM), even though Martin is widely considered a better coach and recruiter.

An interesting question is how many of these coaches will stay one step ahead of the sheriff and at least make a lateral move (perhaps even to one of these jobs - LOL.)

Of these, i would say Travis Ford may be a man whose best years are still ahead of him.

It is interesting that the list includes Sendek. Many a Weber loyalist used Sendek as a cautionary tale, since they argued that NC State ran him out of town and proceeded to get worse under Lowe.

Newsflash Weberites, both Sendek and Weber still suck! And both schools were right in pushing them out; only difference is Sendek pulled a Tubby and left before he got axed.

Scientists discover evidence of giant panda's population history and local adaptation

Dec. 16, 2012 ? A research team, led by Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and BGI, has successfully reconstructed a continuous population history of the giant panda from its origin to the present. The findings suggested whereas global changes in climate were the primary drivers in panda population fluctuation for millions of years, human activities were likely to underlie recent population divergence and serious decline. This work reveals a good example for assessing and establishing the best conservation method for other endangered species.

The latest study was published online in Nature Genetics.

The giant panda is the rarest member of the bear family. Looked upon as the ambassador for all endangered species, it is a well-recognized symbol of international wildlife conservation. The giant panda is currently threatened by continued habitat loss, human persecution, among others. Its dietary specialization, habitat isolation, and reproductive constraints have led to a perception that this is a species at an "evolutionary dead end," destined for deterministic extinction in the modern world.

In this study, researchers carried out whole genome resequencing of 34 wild giant pandas and found the current six geographic populations of giant panda could be divided into three genetic populations, including Qinling (QIN), Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL). Through reconstructing giant panda's population history, they found several important evolutionary events such as two population expansions, two bottlenecks and two population divergences.

The giant panda has a very special bamboo diet, while its ancestor was omnivorous or carnivores. As early as about 3 Myr ago, they probably had already completed their dietary swift and pygmy panda emerged with bamboo as its primary diet. The warm and wet weather at that time provided ideal conditions for the spread of bamboo forests that further led to the first population expansion of giant panda. However, about 0.7 Myr ago, the panda population began to decline due to the two largest Pleistocene glaciations happened in China, and its first population bottleneck occurred at about 0.3 Myr ago. During that period, pygmy panda was gradually replaced by another subspecies -- baconi panda that has larger body size.

After the retreat of the Penultimate Glaciations, giant panda's second population expansion happened and it reached its population peak between 30~50 thousand years (kyr) ago. The warm weather in the Greatest Lake Period (30~40 kyr ago) and alpine conifer forest may play an important role in the flourishing of the panda population. However, during the period of last glacial maximum (LGM), the climate was cold, dry, and inhospitable with frequent storms and a dust-laden atmosphere. Under such harsh environment, extensive panda habitats were loss and its second population bottleneck occurred.

The more recent panda population history showed that the panda population separated into Qinling (QIN) and non-QIN populations at about 0.3Myr ago, and then the non-QIN cluster diverged into two populations, the Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL) at about 2.8 KYA ago. Subsequently, the three populations were different in the ways of fluctuation. For example, there was a drastic decline in the QIN, a slight increase in the MIN and a more remarkable growth in the QXL populations.

Researchers identified the signals of panda's local adaptation. They found the largest group of selected genes in these populations was related to sensory system. However, the two genes, Tas2r49 and Tas2r3, were associated with bitter taste and were under directional selection between the QIN and non-QIN populations, showing no signal of directional selection between MIN and QXL populations.

As a form of olfactory communication, odor perception is crucial for reproduction and survival of giant pandas in the dense forest. Researchers found the MIN and QXL populations had fewer directionally selected genes than QIN and non-QIN, suggesting less variation happens in the selection processes between MIN and QXL. They also found the evidence that population fluctuations were driven by global climate shifts, but recent human activities have likely caused population divergence and the serious recent decline.

Shancen Zhao, Project Manager from BGI, said, "We have identified three genetic populations of giant panda for the current six geographic populations lived in western of China. The varied local adaptations found in our study provide invaluable resource for researchers to better select effective conservation methods to rescue the giant panda even other endangered species. The translocation of wild-caught individuals or releasing the captive-bred ones may be a feasible approach. "

Apple sold over two million iPhone 5s in China in first weekend

Even though there were no insanely long lines to rave about this time, Apple's now showing some big numbers merely three days after its iPhone 5 launch in China. According to the short press release fresh out of the oven, Cupertino's Chinese division has so far managed to sell over two million iPhone 5s through various channels (notably with online reservation for Apple's in-store purchases, as already implemented in Hong Kong), thus "setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China," said CEO Tim Cook. To put that into context, the iPhone 5's original opening weekend sales topped five million in nine countries, which is again solid proof that "China is a very important market" for Apple. Or maybe the Mayan calendar really made an impression among Chinese consumers.

Board challenged after death - Stuff

The family of a Picton woman who died during surgery say they have lost faith in the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and never want the surgeon to operate again.

Rachel Riddell, 31, died of significant blood loss in January 2011 after having her gall bladder removed by Michael Parry at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim.

The Zimbabwean-born surgeon, who is linked to another death and two other botched operations, has not operated on patients since May.

Riddell's older sister, Lynn Weir, said her family were still waiting to find out what went wrong in the operating theatre.

Riddell, who was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, had signed a directive against blood transfusions.

She thought she was going in for laparoscopic, or keyhole, surgery, but medical notes show Parry converted to open surgery halfway through the operation.

Riddell was dropped at the hospital about 7.30am by her mother, who had planned to return to sit with her until she was discharged later that day.

"I think it was around 2.30pm that they rung and said, ?Look your daughter's in trouble, she's in major trouble, she's dying basically'," Weir said.

Riddell was taken back into theatre about 3pm, but died that evening.

"It's been very traumatic for my parents, you know, not being able to lay it to rest because they still don't know what happened.

"For me I want it over and done with, and I want to know what went wrong.

"But I also want to ensure that our DHB is employing people with good health records."

Weir said she did not have faith in the district health board, which employed Parry in April 2010.

"They've spent so long coming out to the public going . . . ?We have confidence in this surgeon'. Well, how do you have confidence in this surgeon and let him continue?"

Parry was stood down on full pay after the death of Jim Nicholls, 80, who suffered massive blood loss during an operation on May 24.

At the same time, Southern Cross suspended his contract as an affiliated provider, and he stopped operating at Churchill Trust Private Hospital in Blenheim.

A coroner's inquiry into the two deaths was put on hold when police launched their own investigation into one of the deaths, to determine whether there was any "liability or culpability".

Police are refusing to confirm which death - Nicholls' or Riddell's - is being investigated.

As well as the police inquiry, the Medical Council is investigating other complaints against Parry that were referred to it by the health and disability commissioner.

Two women complained after they suffered serious complications during Parry operations. Both went in to have their gall bladders removed and had to be sent to Christchurch Hospital for follow-up care.

"Me talking and getting this case out in the open, she would support me 100 per cent," Weir said.

The family laid a complaint with the health and disability commissioner in May last year.

Nelson Marlborough chief medical officer Heather McPherson maintained the quality of service at Wairau Hospital was of a "good standard" and patient safety was of the highest priority.

    WAIRAU HOSPITAL CASES

December 2010: Picton mother Angie Webber, 26, went in to have her gall bladder removed by Parry. Her bile duct was damaged and she was sent to Christchurch Hospital, where a specialist performed open surgery to repair the damage. January 2011: Rachel Riddell, 31, of Picton, died from massive blood loss following surgery to have her gall bladder removed. February 2011: A 36-year-old Upper Hutt woman suffered complications during surgery to remove her gall bladder. She, too, needed further treatment in Christchurch. May 2012: Jim Nicholls, 81, died after blood loss during surgery to remove a hernia and gall bladder.

Charlotte Home Sales Rebounding | Charlotte Communities| Real ...

Charlotte Home sales surged 35% higher in November, thats in units sold, compared with November 2011, continuing the year long trend of advancing sales and increasing prices. ?Home Prices continue their gradual increases.

Why? Is the economic rebound so strong? Or is there another Reason? Take a look at this telling chart below, or what $1100 per month will buy in a house today, at 3.25% interest rates.

My first home, in the early 1980?s cost me about $1100/month, and it cost $85,000. ?So first home buyers you are in luck. Just don?t overbuy.

Yesterday, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke announced interest rates would stay close to zero until we get below 6.5% unemployment. 2012 is going to be a good year around the country.

Buyers need to continue to buy smart! ?Buy what you need for the next 5 years, and resist the urge to overbuy.

Buyers Markets Becoming Sellers Markets In Charlotte

Good news for home Sellers in Charlotte! Across the area, home inventories are down, new home inventory is low, and many of Charlotte?s favorite zip codes have fewer than 6 months of inventory, some only ?3-5 months! Many of these same zip codes had 11 and 12 months of inventory a year ago.

In real estate , we condsider 3 months or less an Extreme Sellers Market, and 3-6 months of inventory, an average Sellers Market. See whats going on in your south Charlotte zipcode, and price range at our November Real Estate Market Report

This continues the trend seen all summer of gradually rising prices and very sturdy increases in unit sales since April. ?Before getting too excited know that there are still hurdles on the high end, and further into the suburbs, but never the less 2013 will show an improvement over 2012. ?tm

Senate Dems offer Sandy disaster aid package

(AP) ? Senate Democrats have quickly cobbled together a $60.4 billion disaster aid package for New York, New Jersey and other states hit by Superstorm Sandy in late October.

Working from the emergency spending request President Barack Obama made five days ago, the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday released draft of the legislation.

While the bill calls for $60.4 billion, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that only about $9 billion would be spent over the next nine months. An additional $12 billion would be spent the following year.

The bill is laden with big infrastructure projects that often require years to complete.

Does the brain become unglued in autism?

Dec. 11, 2012 ? A new study published in Biological Psychiatry suggests that autism is associated with reductions in the level of cellular adhesion molecules in the blood, where they play a role in immune function.

Cell adhesion molecules are the glue that binds cells together in the body. Deficits in adhesion molecules would be expected to compromise processes at the interfaces between cells, influencing tissue integrity and cell-to-cell signaling. In the brain, deficits in adhesion molecules could compromise brain development and communication between nerve cells.

Over the years, deficits in neural cell adhesion molecules have been implicated in schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. One adhesion molecule, neurexin, is strongly implicated in the heritable risk for autism.

Cell adhesion molecules also play a crucial role in regulating immune cell access to the central nervous system. Prior research provided evidence of immune system dysfunction in individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This led scientists from the University of California, Davis to examine whether adhesion molecules are altered in children with ASD.

To conduct the study, they recruited 2-4 year old children, 49 of whom were diagnosed with an ASD and 31 of whom were typically developing. They measured blood plasma levels of multiple molecules, conducted behavioral assessments, and measured head circumference in all participants.

"For the first time, we show that levels of soluble sPECAM-1 and sP-selectin, two molecules that mediate leukocyte migration, are significantly decreased in young children with ASD compared with typically developing controls of the same age," explained the authors. "This finding is consistent with previous reports of decreased levels of both sPECAM-1 and sP-selectin in adults with high-functioning autism."

They also found that repetitive behavior scores and sPECAM-1 levels were associated in children with ASD. Repetitive, stereotyped behaviors are a typical feature of ASD and these data suggest a potential relationship between molecule levels and the severity of repetitive behaviors.

Finally, they also discovered that head circumference was associated with increased sPECAM-1 levels in the typically developing children, but not in the children with ASD. This indicates that perhaps sPECAM-1 plays a role in normal brain growth, as larger head circumference is a known feature of individuals with autism.

"The report of reductions in adhesion molecules in blood in autism is interesting in light of recent genetic findings. However, the importance of these measurements remains somewhat uncertain," commented Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry. "Our field continues to look for blood tests that might inform the diagnostic and treatment process."
