The 1990s was a period when speed was the benchmark of the supercar label. To be considered as driving a supercar, you?d have to reach a certain top speed. The cars of the 1990s were, on average, faster by 37 mph than the cars in the 1980s. The reason for this was due to many advancements in automotive design, aerodynamics and most of all, the fitting of more powerful engines. Many of the supercars of the 1990s had either V8 or V12 engines, which meant they were extremely fast compared with cars from previous decades.

The Mclaren F1, the Bugatti EB 110 Supersport, and the Isdera Commendatore 112i all have V12 engines. The difference in the speed is in the engine configurations. The Mclaren F1 that debuted in 1992 has a 6.1 litre, V12 engine that gives out a top speed of 240 mph; way faster than any of the cars in the 1980s. The Bugatti EB 110 Supersport also came out in 1992 but was fitted with a 3.5 litre, V12 engine. Even with the smaller configuration, the Bugatti EB 110 can still cruise at 217 mph because of its 592 bhp. The Isdera Commendatore 112i, on the other hand, can dish out 402 horsepower from a 6.0 litre, V12 Mercedes engine, and can reach a top speed of 217 mph; not bad for a 1993 super car.

There are other supercars of the 1990s that may have different engine specs but nevertheless, reach the benchmark for the supercar. The Koenig C62 was fitted with a 3.4- litre, V6 engine. It is a 1991 model but has 588 bhp and can reach a top speed of 235 mph.

1991 Jaguar XJ220

Some manufacturers proved that you didn?t have to build a huge engine to achieve high speeds.For example, the Jaguar XJ220 that was introduced in 1991 was fitted with a comparatively small 3.5 litre, V6 engine that generates 500 horsepower. It can reach speeds of up to 220 mph.

1993 Vector W8

The Vector W8, which was produced in 1993 also has a smaller configuration. Under the bonnet is a 6.0 litre, V8 engine that gives out a huge 634 horsepower. It can easily cruise at 217 mph.

Other less known cars include the 1999 Leblanc Caroline GRT. This is a small car but has a supercar status thanks to a 2.0 litre, S4 supercharged engine that can easily reach 212 mph in just a few seconds. Even with a small engine, the Leblanc can reach this speed easily due to the power to weight ratio.

1999 Lamborghini Diablo GT

Not to be outdone by the big guys, Lamborghini introduced the Lamborghini Diablo GT in 1999. Although the top speed of 210 mph may not be impressive compared to some of the earlier cars already mentioned, the 560 bhp from a V12, 6.0 litre engine can get you from zero to 60 mph in a matter of just a few seconds.
