The letter from Wardynski and Partners - which Majcher read to The Associated Press - demands the Association of Folk Artists stop using that name and said the academy had obtained protection of the "Oscar" trademark in Poland in a law adopted in 2000.
The letter said the "verbal trademark Oscar ... is inseparably associated with the Academy Awards."
"The letter gave us a scare, but we are receiving plenty of encouragement from people," Majcher said, adding that in some ways members of his association are impressed that "such a big institution got interested in our modest project."

ROCKPORT, Maine ? The Maine Sternmen is accepting registrations for its spring youth hockey program for those parents and players interested in extending their seasons.
Teams, which will practice at Midcoast Recreation Center, are being made up for mites (birth years 2003 and younger), squirts (2001-02), peewees (1999-2000), bantams minor (1998), bantams major (1997), U-16 (1995-96) and U-18 (1993-94).
Goalie spots have been filled for the U-18, U-16, 1997 and squirt squads.
Each team will compete in two tournaments between April 13 and May 13.
All of the teams will play at the Minutemen Flames Spring Classic Tournament in Marlborough, Mass., April 13-15.
The 1997, U-16 and U-18 teams will also play April 20-22 in the Niagara Bauer Spring Challenge in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
The 2000, ?01, ?02 and ?03 teams will play their second tournament at the Green Mountain Avalanche Spring Showdown in Burlington, Vt., May 4-6. The 1998 and ?99 teams will venture to Burlington, Vt., May 11-13 for the second weekend of the Green Mountain Showdown.
In addition to the tournaments, players get five one-hour on-ice practices and five off-ice practices.

Bangor Youth Hockey is hosting its Mites Friendship Tournament Feb. 24-26 at Sawyer Arena.

Other teams are coming from Presque Isle Youth Hockey, Penobscot Valley Hockey Conference and Casco Bay Youth Hockey.
Each game will consist of three 12-minute periods plus warmups, but the games have to be completed in their one-hour time slot, so running time may be necessary for the third period.

Two major Mars missions lost out to the James Web Space Telescope in Obama's proposed NASA budget, but there's still money for other ambitious space-science missions.
Reports of the?demise of ambitious space-science missions at NASA may be somewhat exaggerated.
Skip to next paragraphTo be sure, in President Obama's fiscal 2013 budget proposal, two major Mars missions for 2016 and 2018 lost a?budgetary wrestling match with the replacement for the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Web Space Telescope.
But Mr. Obama's plan also includes money to begin preliminary studies on a mission to Saturn's moon Enceladus, as well as an orbiter-probe mission to Uranus.
Both represent major ?flagship? projects. And the Uranus mission was the planetary-science community's only pick for a flagship mission under a ?cost constrained? budget in it's latest?10-year survey, released last year, which outlines the community's research priorities for 2013-2022.
Indeed, with the high-profile exception of Mars, money for the other ?cost constrained? priorities ? data analysis from existing and past missions as well as money for two other classes of robotic missions in NASA's portfolio ? have been targeted for budget increases.
?If you want to set the decadal survey side by side with the NASA budget you're going to find that a lot of the priorities are being pursued,? says Roger Launius, a former NASA historian and now curator of planetary exploration programs at the Smithsonian Institution's Air and Space Museum in Washington.
Spending levels may not be as high as advocates want, he adds, ?but it's not as though NASA said, 'We're not doing this. We're not doing that. Go pound sand.' ?
However it certainly doesn't feel that way to planetary scientists who focus on Mars.
Although many could see the handwriting on the wall during the past year, seeing the cuts in a final budget proposal hit them hard.
?Everyone realizes it's austere times, that cuts have to be made and growth curtailed? in spending, says Jim Bell, a planetary scientist at Arizona State University who focuses much of his research on Mars' geology. But many people in the science community and at NASA ?assumed that the pain would be spread around?? discomfort introduced in no small measure to compensate for cost overruns in both the James Web Space Telescope and the Mars Science Laboratory, currently en route to the red planet.
Initial estimates for the James Web Space Telescope, slated for launch in 2018, hovered around $1 billion in the late 1990s. Current estimates put the cost at $8 billion.
Instead of shared sacrifice, ?we're seeing very targeted pain, targeted at the planetary exploration program, and very frustratingly targeted at the most successful part of the planetary exploration program,? the Mars exploration program, he says.
The cuts are all the more frustrating, he and other researchers say, because the latest decadal survey for planetary sciences, which NASA uses as a blueprint for missions, went to great lengths to outline what it saw as a realistic exploration program with modest budget growth as well as scaled-back priorities if budgets truly tightened, as they have.

National trial shows autoinjectors faster, more effective than IV lines in stopping seizures
Thursday, February 16, 2012As part of the first national, randomized clinical trial to study two methods of drug delivery for seizing patients, researchers have shown that using an auto-injector, similar to an EpiPen, to deliver anticonvulsant medication stops prolonged seizures more quickly and effectively than drug delivery through an IV line.
The research, which will be published in the Feb. 16 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, was conducted as part of the Rapid Anticonvulsant Medication Prior to Arrival Trial (RAMPART), which included University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers and local paramedics as part of a nationwide effort studying status epilepticus, or prolonged seizure lasting more than five minutes.
Nationwide, RAMPART involved more than 79 hospitals, 33 emergency medical services agencies, more than 4,000 paramedics and 893 patients, ranging in age from several months old to age 103. The study was conducted through the Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials (NETT) network and sponsored by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which formed NETT to link 17 major research hospitals to conduct clinical trials on acute conditions of the brain.
Cincinnati had the second highest participation site in the nation, with 133 patients treated in the study by participating fire/EMS agencies across the region. In Ohio, UC was supported by Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Forest Park and Green Township fire departments and, in Kentucky, by Florence and Independence fire departments. Leading the study in Cincinnati was Arthur Pancioli, MD, professor and Richard C. Levy Chair for Emergency Medicine at UC.
"Prolonged seizures are dangerous, and may be life threatening," says Pancioli. "As with many neurological emergencies, treating status epilepticus as rapidly as possible can significantly improve a patient's outcome. We now know that using midazolam via an autoinjector, which is easier to administer to a seizing patient, is just as good, if not better, than our current practice which requires starting an IV line."
RAMPART focused on two anticonvulsant medications known to be effective in controlling seizures: midazolam, able to be rapidly absorbed from muscle, and lorazepam, the current standard of care, which must be delivered by IV.
Carried out by paramedics, the study sought to compare how well delivery by each method stopped patients' seizures by the time the ambulance arrived at the emergency department. Researchers found that 73 percent of patients receiving midazolam were seizure-free upon arrival at the hospital, compared to 63 percent of patients who received IV treatment with lorazepam.
Patients treated with midazolam were also less likely to require hospitalization than those receiving IV lorazepam. Among those admitted, both groups had similarly low rates of recurrent seizures.
Starting enrollment in 2009 and completing in June 2011, RAMPART was a unique form of clinical trial, eligible under the Food and Drug Administration requirement of "exception from informed consent." The federal regulation was created to protect patients who are involved in research when consent is not possible because of their medical condition. Researchers held community consultation and public awareness events before RAMPART's launch to raise awareness and get feedback from residents.
"This trial is significant, not only for its findings, but also for the research methods involved," says Pancioli. "We would like to thank the dedicated EMS personnel for their work on the trial and also our community for their trust in allowing us to perform this study. Without this type of research, critical opportunities to help patients with neurological emergencies would be lost."
"In our region, many fire departments and EMS agencies have been using midazolam to treat seizures for several years, and this trial affirms the safety and effectiveness that we have seen," says Jason McMullan, MD, RAMPART co-investigator and assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine at UC.
"The use of the auto-injectors could further improve the excellent care our paramedics provide to their patients every day," he says. "While the auto-injectors are not yet commercially availability, this trial provides an opportunity to change the way that paramedics everywhere deliver time critical treatment for status epilepticus and improve the potential outcomes for our patients."
